Space ??
The unlimited or incalculably great three
dimensional realm in which all material objects are
located and all events occur.
Why explore Space ?
Because we are “STARDUST” ;
A part of Space .
Are we stardust ??
 We really don’t realize that our bodies are made of
remnants of stars and massive explosions in the
galaxies.
 All the material in our bodies originates with that
residual stardust, and it finds its way into plants
and from there into the nutrients that we need for
everything we do, think, move, grow & every few
years the bulk of our bodies are newly created.
The Mystery of Space
Throughout human history, space has remained a
distant realm full of mystery and wonder.
 During the cold war, space race began between
USSR and USA.
 The exploration of space began with the launch of
first artificial satellite SPUTNIK 1 by USSR on 4th
October, 1957.
 Then on 3rd November, 1957 Sputnik 2, 2nd
spacecraft launched to earth’s orbit carried first
living animal in space, Dog Laika.
VOSTOK 1
 The first successful human spaceflight VOSTOK 1 was
launched on 12th April, 1961 by Soviet Union with
cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.
 Yuri Gagarin was the first human both to travel into
outer space and to orbit the Earth.
I got
this…
APOLLO 11
 Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first
humans on the Moon, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin
on 20th July, 1969.
 Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar surface and
uttered the immortal line “That is one small step for a
man, one giant leap for mankind.”
Space Exploration
The big picture
Space exploration is still in infancy . Although we
have learned a lot, we still have a lot of questions.
The cost of space exploration mandates that we
should work together with other countries.
Example – International Space Station (ISS)
Chandrayaan Programme
 Chandrayaan 1 – Indian Space Research Organisation
launched its first unmanned lunar space probe on 22nd
October, 2008. It was a huge success and milestone for
India as It became the fourth nation to place its flag on
the moon and Moon Impact Probe (MIP) discovered
water on lunar surface.
 Chandrayaan 2 - The second phase is under preparation
which will incorporate spacecraft capable of soft-
landing on the Moon and will also deploy
a robotic rover on lunar surface. It’s to be
launched in 2017 aboard the heavy duty
GSLV Mk II rocket.
Why go to Moon ??
 Origin and Evolution.
 India’s Potential .
 One million tonnes of
Helium3 on moon’s
surface.
 Helium3 is believed to
be fuel of the future.
 Outpost for further
planetary explorations.
Advantages of Space exploration
• To reveal some of the mysteries that enfold outer space.
 Weather satellites help us track developing hurricanes,
allowing meteorologists to warn people days in advance. That
saves thousands of lives.
 Communication satellites allow us instant access to
information all over the world using radio, television, and
phones.
 Why is Mars dry, cold, nearly airless, and dead? Why is Venus
covered in thick clouds and suffering a runaway greenhouse
effect? Why do hurricanes on Jupiter last for centuries? All
these questions (and thousands more) help us understand
our own planet, and allow us to see how humans are affecting
it. Certainly understanding asteroids is important– we need
to learn how to move them in case one is heading our way; an
asteroid impact could wipe out all humans on Earth, so our
very future is tied to space travel and exploration.
What is space breeding ?
 Space breeding refers to the technique of sending
seeds or microorganisms into space (200-400km) on
a recoverable satellite or in other recoverable
spacecraft. In the strong-radiation, high-vacuum,
low-gravity and alternating magnetic field space
environment, seeds may undergo beneficial
mutation. Upon returning to Earth, mutated seeds
will be selected and planted to breed strains with
higher quality and yield.
Men wanted for hazardous journey,
small wages, and bitter cold, long
months of complete darkness,
constant danger, safe return
doubtful, honour and recognition in
case of success.
