Burma, now known as Myanmar, was colonized by Britain in the 1940s. In 1962, a military group overthrew the newly established democratic government. Aung San Suu Kyi, daughter of independence leader Aung San, founded the National League for Democracy to establish democracy in Burma. She won a 1990 election but the military refused to recognize the results. The military government rules through oppressive policies and corruption, causing economic problems and human rights violations against ethnic groups and political opponents. Allowing Aung San Suu Kyi to travel could help her efforts to create democracy in Burma while increased UN involvement could help protect more of Burma's people from the regime's abuses.
