Chapter 8 Singapores Step Towards Self Governement 1955 19592719
David Marshall became Singapore's first Chief Minister after his Singapore Labour Front party won the 1955 election. However, the British did not give him real authority or respect the position. Marshall advocated for full self-government, but stepped down as Chief Minister in 1956 when talks failed. Lim Yew Hock then became Chief Minister and impressed the British by arresting communist leaders. In 1957, Lim Yew Hock led Singapore to be granted full internal self-government, though the British retained control of defense, foreign affairs, and security. The 1959 election was Singapore's first as a self-governing state, with Lee Kuan Yew's PAP winning a majority and Lee becoming the first Prime Minister.

Gandhi led two major nonviolent resistance campaigns in India against British rule: the Non-cooperation Movement from 1920-1922 and the Salt March in 1930. Both involved mass civil disobedience and resulted in Gandhi and many others being imprisoned. Nelson Mandela was also arrested for treason in 1956 for his involvement in resisting apartheid in South Africa through peaceful protests and was acquitted in 1961 after a long trial. He later divorced his wife Winnie due to her involvement in violence and corruption during his imprisonment.

In 1955, Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give up her seat to a white passenger on a bus sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott, thrusting King into a leadership role in the growing civil rights movement.

Nelson Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and politician who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. - 5. Political Causes In 1988, Aung San SuuKyi returned home to Burma Became part of the country’s nationwide democracy uprising The military responded to the uprising with mass killing of innocent people The “8888 Uprising”
- 6. Political Effects The 8888 Uprising inspired Aung San SuuKyi Helped found the NLD, appointed Gen. Secretary In 1990, Burmese dictatorship was forced to hold a general election. ASSK was banned from personally standing in election. NLD won majority of seats in Parliament, but results were ignored.
- 7. House Arrest Held under house arrest until July, 1995 In 2000- put under house arrest again In 2002, she was released again with freedom to travel the country but detained after the Depayin Massacre No phone line, no mail, and no security.
- 8. Economic Causes In 2011, Aung San SuuKyi addressed the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos She spoke on behalf of “55 million people of Burma who have largely been left behind.”

Solution #1- She became a symbol of her nation in the fight for democracy Negative Positive She became a symbol of her people because you have to stand firm against the opposition Makes her own people be braver because it gives them a ray of hope that you don’t need to be fierce to be strong She had to stay detained and under house arrest for more than 15 years She dealt with physical attacks and innocent deaths of her supporters
- 13. Solution #2- Grow Support for her Cause Negative The people who benefit from the socialist regime have a harder time supporting Aung San SuuKyi’s views Positive All that she fought for will finally make a difference
- 14. Best Solution: I think the best solution is to think of “The Lady of Burma” as a symbol of the struggle of the Burmese people’s desire to be free. Anybody can look up to her for hope when they don’t believe they can stand up for what they believe in.
- 15. How Can I Help? I can help by continuing to struggle for human rights I did this by joining the organization, Amnesty International, to help support the fight to end abuses of human rights.
