The Korean War
During the times of the 1950's the whole world was in a state of unrest, the downfall of Hitler in
Europe had left an enormous swath of land that was half occupied by the allies and half occupied by
the USSR(Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) which were communist. On the other side of the
world in the pacific theater Japan had succumbed to the force of the United States and was defeated
leaving all their conquered territory up for grabs. A specific region of interest that was given up by
Japan were the Koreas which were divided into two countries that we know today as North Korea
and South Korea. Conflicts erupted between both the communist north and the capitalist south,
North Korea invaded South Korea and the United States had to step ... Show more content on

In North Korea, communism ruled supreme in government and in South Korea a more capitalist
approach was prevalent in their government. . The spread of communism didn't stop and kept its
march downward through the peninsula at a steady pace. "On June 25th, 1950 75,000 North Korean
troops poured into South Korea which kick started the beginning of the Korean War. This lead to a
civil war between North and South Korea which was soon brought to international attention when
the U.S. came to the aid of South Korea and the Peoples republic of China (PRC) came to the aid of
North Korea."1 The United States agreed that the spread of communism should not be allowed to
continue its advance into South Korea, arriving to the decision that military action would be
required. The Americans knew that the invasion of South Korea by North Korea was just a mask of
the advance of communism into the region. "In July, just a few months after the wars beginning
American troops landed in South Korea to help stop the invading force of North Koreans."2 The
North Korean invasion came as an alarming surprise to American officials. As far as they were
concerned, this was not simply a border dispute between two unstable dictatorships on the other side
of the globe. Instead, many feared it was the first step in a communist campaign to take over the
world. It was because of this reason that

Causes Of The Korean War
The origins of the Korean War (War) are still a subject of research for many political scientists and
historians who claim various reasons are responsible for the outbreak. It can be concluded that Kim
Il–Sung is responsible for the start of the War as he commanded the invasion across the 38th parallel
on June 25th, 1950. Interestingly in North Korea today students are taught that the War was started
with the South invading the North. The roles of foreign players such as the China, Japan, the U.S.,
and the USSR, are all factors which led to the War.
First, I will analyse the argument put forth by Hye Jin (Hailey) Park in Influence of Foreign
Intervention or Civil Conflicts of North and South Koreans, that the root causes for the War were
civil issues such as nationalism and pride; but, these issues were overshadowed by international
conflicts. Then I will analyse the arguments put forth by Sergei N. Goncharov, John W. Lewis, and
Xue Litai in Uncertain Partners: Stalin, Mao, and the Korean War who argue that without Kim's
persuasion of the USSR and China the invasion of South Korea would not have taken place. This
will be followed by the similarities between the arguments, theories which relate to War, and my
conclusion.

The Korean War: The Causes Of The Korean War
The foreign influence and conflicting leaders that the two sides of the war were instrumental in the
cause of the Korean War. This is because when two sides have completely different ideologies, mass
conflict easily sparks from just a small dispute. These conflicting ideologies were the causes for the
two most powerful countries during the time period to battle against each other through the Korean
War. The two sides, having completely different opinions on how to unify Korea lead to a dispute
that would last three years as a war and cause large losses for both sides14.
The Korean War was also caused from the economic disorder because of the economic contrast and
external effects. The economic contrast before the Korean War became a reason ... Show more

Union took power over North Korea making the country communist, while the United States and

Winter Wave : The Korean Wave And The Korean Wave

The Korean Wave, otherwise also known as Hallyu, is a phenomenon that originated from Korea
and traveled all over the world. Thirty years back, no one would have known what "saranghaeyo" or
what "oppa" meant. But now, people are taking Korean classes to learn the language and culture and
non natives are able to understand a whole episode of Korean drama without subtitles. One would
argue that the drama Winter Sonata initiated the Korean Wave. Winter Sonata is a television series
that incorporates a blend of romance and slice of life with the classic first love kind of storyline.
However, on the same year something else was released. It is the music video "Gangnam Style" by

The audience was much more interactive with the content. They would sub the music video so lyrics
would be accessible in their home country where Korea is not their national language. Also, fans and
content creators would film remakes and parodies of "Gangnam Style". With the release of
"Gangnam Style" led to the spread of it via social media and recreations which made it more
entertaining for other people to watch and spread around even more (Jung and Shim). For example,
concerts tend to be more fun when the singer points the microphone to the crowd and let them sing
the lyrics along with him or her. "Gangnam Style" stimulated involvement with the fanbase with the
dancing; which many people do when they hear the song.
Furthermore, "Gangnam Style" impacted the position of being Asian in America specifically. While
PSY did make the music video, the music video ultimately made him famous in the states. Many
people recognized him and even Justin Bieber's manager had expressed thoughts of possibly signing
a contract (Jung and Li). There is more interest in Korean pop music and desire to learn more about
Korea. With the interest in Kpop, Asians feel more comfortable and confident in their background.
With more people wanting to understand what it is like to be Asian, there forms a link between
Asians and the rest of the world (Ng). The shift really begins to roll with "Gangnam Style". In the

Causes Of The Korean War
The Cold War was the catalyst for global transformation. The war of words between the United
Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), and the Western powers became much more when an outbreak of
war struck, engaging both North and South Korea on opposing sides. The USSR and the USA were
both responsible for the Korean War as their belligerent opinions on the spread of communism
throughout the Cold War surfaced on Korean soil in the form of tanks and armed men. From the
beginning of the war both the USA and the USSR took advantage of the tension that they caused
within Korea and used the conflict as an outlet for their abhorrence of one another's beliefs. Both
countries influence over the North and the South lead to the adoption of their own ideologies
(communism and capitalism) and in a domino effect began the Korean War. The result of the war
did nothing to quell or endorse the USSR's and the USA's opposing ideologies and has had lasting
effects that are still in existence today. Only five years after the end of World War II, the invasion of
South Korea by North Korea brought forth yet another corporal confrontation in the wake of a war–
torn world.
The political strain and hostility of the two major superpowers in the world violently erupted and
began the Korean War. The repossessing of Korea from Japan's rule was the product of the allied
forces success in World War II; though caused a permanent rift within the country as attempts at
unification failed, thus the creation of the

I am applying to the Korean Ancestry Grant on the basis that it is a fantastic opportunity that could
potentially support my goal towards striving higher education. In matters on why this scholarship
applies with me, I have Korean ancestors/relatives on the fact that I was born in Seoul, South Korea
and lived there for around 3 to 4 years. We moved to the United States for my father's new job, but
we are generally able to keep in touch with our relatives with the advances in technology,
specifically, a phone specifically meant for South Korea as well as using face–time apps that were
also available. Not only that, but we do get to revisit Korea from time to time, especially during
summer vacation when the time works best for us. I will admit, that every time we go back, I expect
to feel out of place and walk in the streets as a tourist rather than someone who lived there, and there
are always time where I wonder what life would be like if my family stayed in Korea rather than

chapter coming up on the horizon. The amount of education that has brought me up here is really
one of the many foundations that make me who I am. Education is a solid foundation in today's

The World Of The Korean War
Before the Korean War took place, a significant historical event that led to the partitioning of Korea
into two is the later part of the Japanese occupation, where Japan colonized Korea during World War
II. Korea was under Japanese control for 35 long years, from 1910 to 1945. The nation was able to
gain its independence when Japan surrendered on August 15 in 1945. The main factor which aided
Korea towards freedom from Japan was the Allies of World War II, also known as the United
Nations today. The Allies included 20 nations, with the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and
the United Kingdom being the larger entities. The Allies joined forces against the Axis powers,
which mainly comprised Germany, Italy and Japan, who were trying to protect nations against
communism (promoted by the Soviet Union and China) and plutocratic–capitalism (promoted by the
United States). On August 6, 1945, the United States launched its first atomic bomb attack on Japan
in the city of Hiroshima, causing devastating effects to the city. On August 9, 1945, the United
States launched their second atomic bomb attack on Japan in another city, Nagasaki, while the
Soviet Union invaded Manchukuo, which was under Japanese control at that time. The series of
events left Japan in a state of shock and bewilderment that they had no choice but to surrender to the
Allied forces. At that time, the Soviet Union had conquered the northeastern part of Korea, while the
United States was still attacking in

Essay on South Korean Culture
South Korea is one of the most homogeneous countries in the world, in which it has its own culture,
language, and customs that are different from other Asian countries. In South Korea, the citizens
greatly value hard work, filial piety, and humility in their daily lives. South Koreans are very proud
people in which they pride themselves in their traditional culture and their financial success. South
Koreans have certain etiquettes and manners that are highly esteemed in their culture. Like Japan
and China, the bow is the main custom of greeting someone. It is not only a form of greeting, but it
is also a sign of respect that an individual is showing to the other. Entitlement is important in South

Even though many South Koreans express no religious preference, there are two main religions in
the country; the citizens of South Korea practice Christianity and Buddhism. Since South Korea is a
homogeneous country, it has its own spoken language. The country also does not have many
ethnicities residing in the nation, except for some migrant Chinese laborers. South Korea's social
structure revolves around the individual's professional, family, and education background. People
who have attained prestigious job titles, graduated from a first–rate university, or was born into an
influential family are placed very high on the social structure. People who do not have a respectable
education background are usually on the bottom of the status pole; however, it is possible for social
mobility. The South Korean education system is similar to the one in the United States. Even though
the years of attendance might be dissimilar from the US, the education system still consists of an
elementary, middle, and high school. After graduating from high school, most students apply and
attend universities from all across the nation. South Korea appears in the first quadrant of Figure 2.2
in which states that the country has a culture with relatively larger power distance and lower
individualism. South Korea has a relatively large power distance due to the country's strong
emphasis in respecting for one's elders and superiors. This cultural belief is deeply

to all of the fighting and how it was looked down upon by most of the world. One last effect that this
war had on Korea was that it lost more than 4 million people during this war and at least 2/3 of those

Korean, Korean And South Korea Essay
"Korean is one of the world 's oldest living languages, and its origins are as obscure as the origin of
the Korean people." (Hallen) Since it's origins, the Korean language has been puzzling to westerners
unfamiliar with this literally foreign language. Most Americans are familiar with Korea and it's
divide because of the Korean war in the 1950's, yet their culture and language are not as
acknowledged as they should be. Although Korean is only an official language in North and South
Korea, people speak it all over the world. To unlock the mystery of Korean, it is necessary to look
not only at it's geographic and social elements, but also the structure of the language, including its
alphabet and numerical system, and in doing so myself I was able to gain a new respect for the
language.
As mentioned above, Korean is primarily spoken in North and South Korea with 72 million people,
however it expands far beyond it's tiny peninsula. In China, two million people speak Korean as
their fist language and 700,000 people in Japan. This is logical considering Korea sits right between
the two nations. This also explains the heavy influence both nations have on the language. Other
nations where Korean is spoken as a first language include the United States with two million
speakers, and the Russian regions of Kazhstan and Uzbekistan with 500,000 speakers. (Korean
Language History) In the United States, Korean is the third most spoken language in Virginia and
Georgia. (Wideopencountry)

Korean Culture : Cultural Differences Between Korean And...
I have not participated in any Korean extracurricular clubs because of the fact that I participate in
many other clubs such as chess, health and fitness, code interactive, and board game club. However,
I have participated in Ms. Kang's Movie nights in 9th grade. In these movie nights, we would watch
Korean movies in order to expose us to Korean lifestyles and improve our ability to better listen to
Korean. Through these movie nights I learned of the vast differences between Koreans and
Americans. One very important difference being Korean's importance in respect. Korean people are
respectful to everyone they meet and are happy to do so. There are even two ways to talk in Korean
that are considered respectful, those being informal polite and formal polite. In my everyday life I
see Americans disrespect one another for the smallest things such as a little accidental push, or
forgetting their name. However, in these movies I noticed how passionate and excited both are on
their culture. Korean people become siblings in their Chuseok, just as Americans thank everyone
and everything for their lives in Thanksgiving.
One time in the past where I exemplified maturity was in the final days on the France trip. My group

every one of us were happy to be walking in the streets of France in such a beautiful night.

Korean Wave And Its Effect On The Korean Culture
Introduction The Korean Wave also known as Hallyu first appeared during the mid 1990's.
Korean Wave simply means the rising of popularity of the Korean culture (Lee, 2011). This Korean

of Korean pop, which has different music genres incorporated into one. K–pop includes hip–hop,

Korean Transnationalism
Throughout Korea's history, there are many instances in which lead to a cultural exchange between
the Korean people and foreigners. This exchange is what leads to the trans–nationalistic nature of
Korea. The biggest occurrence that led to transnationalism along with a struggle in transnational
identity is that of the Japanese Colonial Occupation over Korea from 1910–1945. This occupation of
Korea was not just so Japan can follow the colonizing efforts of western governments, but also the
complete assimilation of the Korean people. This assimilation ideology was called Naisen Ittai and
is known as the unification of the Japanese and Korean people. Though, this mainly meant the
creation and enforcement of rules or policies to slowly turn the Korean populace into becoming as
Japanese as they could. This Naisen Ittai implemented by the Japanese government lead to the
cultural and self–identity struggles many Koreans obtained while trying to balance the notion of
becoming Japanese while retaining their Korean heritage. However, some Koreans did not struggle
at all with this notion, as some embraced the Japanese assimilation, and others completely opposed
it. Those who embraced it known as collaborators and are seen as traitors to the Korean People.
These clashing ideals and identity brought up upon Naisen Ittai can be found throughout many
Korean works of literature and film. Some of the Korean works in which these ideals are found
within are Yôm Sang–sôp's On the Eve of

South Korean to establish a system that uses three branches of government. Funk and Wagnall

Korean War: The Causes Of The Korean War
There were certain causes of this war. On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when the North
Korea, supported by the Soviet union and China, invaded South Korea, which was supported by the
United States. In 1950, Syngman Rhee, the president of South Korea at that time, boasted that he
was going to attack North Korea but they were attacked by North Korea instead. In 1949, Kim Il
Sung persuaded Stalin and Mao Tse Tung to support an invasion of South Korea. This triggered for
the war to happen. But the underlying reason was because it was just a continuation of the cold war
though the US and the USSR weren't the ones fighting rather the North and South Korea. The US
and the USSR were just using it to fight without having a hot war.
Besides the causes, there were also positive and negative effects after the war ended. The Korean
War was able to boost the economy of both Japan and the US. It also legitimized the United Nations
and led to further expansion of military power. The war also reinforced the boundary between the ...

directly without invading Russia.
Another significant event that happened during the Korean War was the Battle of Inchon or The

North Korea's supply route. by September 27, the North Korean army was pushed out of Seoul and

Yes and No in Korean Essay
Yes and No
After coming to America, I have suffered from the improper usage of "yes" and "no." I sometimes
confuse an affirmative response with a negative one because the usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean
is different from English. For example, if I am asked, "Haven't you had dinner yet?" and I have not
had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say, "Yes, I haven't." But in English, I have to say, "No, I
haven't." This different usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean and in English sometimes causes
misunderstandings or even estrangements between my American friends and me.

the summer of 1989, my close friend was a dorm–mate, Mark. He was in his late twenties and had
gotten married about five years ago. One sultry weekend night, he brought his son and daughter into
the dorm. Playing with each other, his son and daughter made some noise while they were running
up and down. I did not mind the noise since I was just watching T.V. The next morning, I came
across Mark and his offspring in the doorway of the dorm. After we both said, "Hello," he
introduced his children to me.
"Nice to meet you. How old are you?" I asked his son.
"He is three years old," Mark replied on behalf of his son and asked me smiling, "Didn't they make
noise last night? Didn't it bother you?" Because I did not mind the noise at all, I clearly said "Yes!"
How stupid I appeared to be! The mild smile suddenly disappeared from his face, and he said, "I am
sorry about that. They are going right now, so they will not bother you

Korean Wave
1.0 Introduction
The purpose of this paper is to study a sub–culture by conducting an oral interview with a group of
people who belong to a particular cultural group. This interview is carried out to understand their
perception of the sub–culture. The people chosen for this oral interview are Helen Xu who comes
from China and Hana Yamata who comes from Japan, and both of them are big fans of Korean
culture. In order to present their experiences of Korean Wave, this paper will be divided into four
sections. The first section will describe demographic characteristics of the Korean Wave group in
Asia. The second section is a literature review refering to the cultural background of Korean Wave

This culture is often called individualism. Moreover, Hofstede (1980), noted that power distance in a
culture, which means the difference between the lowest and highest member. Highest member refer
to a person or a group always makes the decision; people who always have input is belong to lowest
member. For example, Korean drama considers family–oriented stories in which father has the
power in the family, and other members of family usually defer to him. However, in Western society,
parents cultivate their child to be more creative, and give them more freedom to choose their future
education and career. Therefore, In Western culture, a child can make such decisions himself, while,
in Korean culture, children are more likely to defer to their father. Futhurmoer, Western modernity
and Asian traditions has formed striking comparison. In 18 century, Western societies had rised the
evolution of post–modernity that suggests the end of original culture, art, subject and history. The
production of post–modernity includes the internet, cars, digital computers and so on (Venn &
Featherstone, 2006, p.462). Modernity refers a new way of lifestyle and social system. Asian
traditions advocate the beliefs, rituals, morals, values and customers in which human being have
been passed down from their ancestors (O'Shannessy & Minett, 2008, p.33). Especially, Taoism and
Confucianism have had a profound impact on Asian socities, such

Korean Demilitarized Zone
The Vietnam and the Korean wars were stomach churning, because of how many people were killed,
and how long it took for them to end these harsh wars. The Korean War started On June 25, 1950.
The Korean War began when 75,000 soldiers from the North Korean People's Army (which were
communists) attacked across the 38th parallel. The Korean War was fought between North and
South Korea; US forces had come to the help the South Korean people. Gen. Douglas MacArthur
was the leader of the US army, he got control of both the US and the South Korean army because of
how brave and smart he was. They moved to the north of the 38th parallel in an attempt to destroy,
and conquer the North Korean side. The Chinese troops were in support of the North Korean side.
The Korean Demilitarized Zone is a strip of land running across the Korean Peninsula it was
established at the end of the Korean War to serve as a an area of land between the two armed forces
so they are not allowed to enter into each other's properties, making it less likely that they will attack
each other between North and South Korea. The Chinese tried pushing ... Show more content on

The war was fought between North Vietnam (supported by the Soviet Union, China and other
regions that loved communists), and the government of South Vietnam (supported by the United
States, Philippines, and other communist regions). The Viet Cong fought a rebel war against anti–
communist forces in the region. From 1955, the U.S started to support South Vietnam in the war
against the Communist side, North Vietnam (getting help mainly from China). The Chinese sent
military help to Indochina France. So they can succeed in their goal of spreading communism
around the world. The leader of the south was called Saigon. The US army left Vietnam on the 15th

A Comparison Of The Korean Wave ( Hallyu In Korean?
Korean wave (Hallyu in Korean) is term coined by Chinese media to describe the popularity of the
Korean cultural products in China. It is said that the first wave of Hallyu is brought by Korean TV
series that became a huge hit in China and Japan in mid 1990s. Two dramas, What Is Love About
(1997) and Stars in My Heart (1999), are usually credited with kickstarting the Korean wave (Huat,
2012). In the early to mid–2000s, two more dramas, Winter Sonata (2002) and Dae Jang Geum
(2003), catalyzed the Korean wave by shattering ratings records, not only in South Korea, but also
in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam (Chen, 2016).
In Japan, the single Korean drama that made a huge impact was Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong
Jun shown in 2003 (Chua, 2008). The drama specifically Bae Yoong Jun was able to establish a
strong fan base of middle–age women in Japan. He even earned the title 'Yon–sama' and 'Lord
Yong'.
After the Korea dramas, it is said that the second wave of Hallyu is brought by the Korean popular
music or K–pop. Same with the dramas, it also started in China and Japan. It later then spread to
South East Asia mostly in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines and now reaching United
States, Europe, and Latin America. Korean boy band H.O.T. gathered a huge fan base and topped
the music charts in China and Taiwan in 1998. Other Korean boy groups such as NRG and Shinhwa
and girl group Baby V.O.X have also held concerts in China. In Japan, which is the world's second
largest music market after the U.S, albums by Korean idol groups have performed greatly in the
charts almost as soon as they are released. In 2002, solo artist BoA's debut album topped Japan's
Oricon Weekly Chart (Shim, 2006). Other popular Korean groups such as Tohoshinki have placed
No.1 on Japan's top music chart Oricon competing with the local Japanese music. Even the songs
produced in Korean also place high in the charts despite its language proving the strong fan base
that the groups have created in Japan. Meanwhile other groups such as EXO and Super Junior have
spawned "brand extensions," EXO–M and Super
Junior–M, which feature Korean and Chinese members who perform in Mandarin for the China
market (Chen, 2016).

Cause Of The Korean War
Cause of the Korean War The Korean War is often referred to as the forgotten war, but when 5
million people are killed during a three year period, the war should not be so easily forgotten. (Staff,
2009) The causes of the war need to be reviewed, so that in the future, humanity can view ways to
prevent it from happening again. There are numerous factors that need to be considered when
examining the causes of the Korean War, such as the way the Korean peninsula came to be North
and South Korea, the role Korea played during the Cold War, the type of governments that were put
into place after the North and South were separated, and the support that was provided to the North
and South by other countries.

The United States also did not want the Soviet Union to strengthen their hold in the Pacific with the
fear of communism spreading across the world. This caused tensions between the two countries that
would bleed over to the commencement of the Korean War and aggravated Cold War relation
between the world's two superpowers.
The Korean War had a profound effect on the Cold War. The USSR and U.S. provided a lot of
support for North and South Korea during and after the war based on the agendas of Moscow and
Washington. After World War II, with the divided of Germany and Korea, the Cold War had started.
America backed by the United Nations wanted free governments in the world and the Soviet Union
want to have control over the world under communist governments. The Soviets saw the United
Nations as a threat in Europe and the same can be said for the Korean peninsula. (Encyclopedia,
2016) Both superpowers of the world had their own visions of how the world should look. This is
why the Cold War influence the Korean War, because without the battle of communism versus
capitalism, the Korean War might not have happened, or would have played out very differently.
The cause of the tension in Korea started with the inconclusive split of the country, but the two
governments that were put into place after World War II fueled the fire for the start of the Korean
War. The United States chose a democratic

Korean War : The Main Causes Of The Korean War
The Korean War happened between June 25, 1950– July 27, 1953. I believe that the main cause for
the Korean war was to have only one Korea. Over 6,000,000 men, soldiers, and sailors fought in the
Korean War. The people on one side had 3 million people that were from North Korea, China, and
Russia. On the opposing side were 3 million people from South Korea and from 21 United Nation
countries including Australia. The immediate cause of the Korean War was that North Korea, led by
a Communist government, invaded South Korea. One of the other factors, that helped cause the
conflict was the Japanese occupation of Korea. In 1910 Japanese people served for the first ten years

Korea invaded South Korea. "After that, North Korea headed quickly to the capital city of Seoul.
The United States then responded by pushing a resolution U.N.'s SC( Security Council) calling for
military assistance to South Korea. When Harry S. Truman found out he did the 'police action'. The
'police action' was when Harry S. Truman rapidly dispatched U.S. land, air, and sea forces to Korea.
Then, the South Korean people and the U.S. marched into North Korea where it prompted Chinese
forces in the late 1950's. In 1953, North Korea and the United States signed a ceasefire which ended
the conflict. The cease fire agreement also put South and North Korea back where they were in the

Cutting edge Korean slides from Middle Korean, which thus dives from Old Korean, whiplummets
from the dialect talked in Prehistoric Korea (named Proto–Korean), whose nature is wrangled, to a
limited extent since Korean hereditary inceptions are dubious. A connectch ion of Korean (together
with its wiped out relatives which shape the Koreanic family) with Japonic dialects has been
proposed by etymologists like William George Aston and Samuel Martin. Roy Andrew Miller and
others proposed or bolstered the incorporation of Koreanic and Japonic dialects in the implied Altaic

alphabetic featural composing framework referred to today as hangul, which was intended to either

The Korean War was the first war in which the United Nations played a major role in. It was also
part of the cold war between the US and Soviet Union. One of the deadliest war in history, it took
many lives in such a short span of time of three years. Even after all these deaths, the conflict isn't
completely resolved in Korea. There are still American troops stationed in South Korea, in case the
Communists decide to take aggressive action.
In WW II, Japan had gained control in Korea. At the end, when Japan was defeated by the Allies, the

The Korean Peninsula
A little bit less than five years after World War 2 ended, a crisis broke out on the Korean Peninsula.
The Korean Peninsula had been divided after war. The two halves became separate nations–
communist North Korea, and noncommunist, capitalist South
Korea. (Resource #1) It was divided at latitude 38 degrees north, also known as the 38th parallel.
(Resource #2)
In June 1950, North Korean troops stormed south and seized the South Korean capital of Seoul

Troops were rushed in by the UN. That was commanded by the United States to help South Korea.
The UN force, known as the
Eighth Army, had superior air and naval power. Even though the UN had that, the North
Koreans had better weapons on the ground and more soldiers. The North Korean soldiers were more
experienced. For seven weeks, KPA forces pushed the Republic of
Korea (ROK) Army and UN forces toward the coast. (Resource #3)
By December 1950, the Eighth Army had retreated across the 38th parallel and reassembled in
Seoul. The Chinese lined up north of that position, preparing to attack.
Even though they lost many soldiers, the UN forces numbered almost 300,000 and were still a
match for the enemy. (Resource #4)
The UN and the United States had no plans to give up on South Korea. Their plan was to hold a line
of Seoul, close to the 38th parallel or as far north as possible.
They would do this until the Chinese and North Korea were willing to negotiate a peace agreement.
For South Korea, the UN, and the United States, it seemed terrifying to hold a line against the
seemingly numberless Chinese. The Chinese struck the UN line

The Korean War : Challenges During The Korean War
America faced many challenges during the Korean War. Challenges such as South Korea having a
difficult time defending itself, the Soviet Union avoiding resolutions, and the conflict of China
entering the war. The Korean War. The Korean War happened after World War II, when the U.S.
wanted to fight off communist influence made by the USSR. The U.S. wanted to prevent the
ideology of communism from invading countries because it caused the fear of another World War to
occur. This caused a major conflict in Korea. South Korea not being able to defend itself caused the
U.S. to have actively participate in the war, also the U.S. had to come up with resolutions when the
USSR wanted nothing to do with resolutions, moreover then China entered the war but the U.S.
considered them as "friends". There problems were all issues that were hard to overcome during the
war. First, the U.S. had the most of their issues with the USSR and the USSR consumed North
Korea with a communist government. The U.S. feared that South Korea would be influenced by
North Korea considering they were neighboring countries. It would create domino like effect. "To sit
by while Korea is overrun by unprovoked armed attack would start a disastrous chain of events
leading most probably to world war" (Doc.1). The U.S. feared for another war and hoped that South
Korea would be able to not be influenced and be able to defend itself. This would help the US to not
have to physically get involved with the USSR. Although

the last decades and continuously develop until today. It got lots of influences from other countries

Particularly, kimchi is the best–known Korean traditional fermented vegetable–based food. The
redness color from red pepper powder and its spiciness "is one of the defining flavors of Korean
cuisine" (Shin, 2014, p. 225). As time flies, kimchi was developed into so many types; however,
napa cabbage kimchi became popular among Korean since the twentieth century. It is a part of
Korea food's culture, and whenever people talk about Korea, they naturally remember about kimchi.
Other than that, because of the special ingredient, red pepper powder, kimchi makes people healthier
by production of enzyme that "oxidizes fat cells to warm up the body and help it endure the cold in
winter" (Shin, 2014, p.231). This metabolic reaction of kimchi helps the food easy to digest, and it
brings lots of benefits to the body as well.
Additionally, customs and traditions of dining in Korea is not only about how ingredients play
important role to make food taste better, but it's also about ensuring the health for diners. Based on

Often referred to as the "Pacific War", the series of island fighting took place between 1942–1945. I

of naval ships, which helped me gain a better understanding of the full extent of the war.

Failure to understand and manage social and cultural differences may have significant health
consequences for minority groups in particular. As health care provid–ers, we can easily recognize
the physical problems a person has, but sometimes we overlook the whole or holistic individual,
which includes the persons cultural element. The hospital environment is a multi–cultural setting.
Therefore, healthcare providers need to be culturally competent so we can deliver better care for our
patients and their families. Healthcare providers who understand their clients' cultural values,
beliefs, and practices, are in a better posi–tion to provide culturally acceptable care that improves
opportunities for health promotion and wellness, health maintenance and restoration, illness,
disease, and injury prevention (NursingALD, n.d.). Giger and Davidhizar Transcultural Assessment
Model The Transcultural Assessment Model of Giger and Davidhizar was created in response to
student nurses' that need to assess and develop care for culturally diverse patients. (Giger & Da–
vidhizar, 2002). This model suggests a framework that can be integrated into nursing education
courses to assess cultural values of

Ethnic And National Identities Of Koreans Essay
Ethnic and national identities of Koreans in Kazakhstan by Yekaterina Pak
On March 1 2013, in the apartment of my older brother, in small town in the north of Kazakhstan,
everything was prepared for the celebration of my niece's first–year birthday that Koreans usually
call tol'. Small low wooden table was covered with different subjects symbolizing various good
wishes for our little girl's future: a spool of thread for long life, a book for knowledge, bowl of rice
for prosperity, money for richness and others. My niece was wearing special Korean dress hanbok
that was brought from Korea and was handed over among my relatives whenever they have their
own tol'. The tradition of first–year birthday has been always kept in my family as a reminiscence of
our ethnic belonging. Currently in Kazakhstan live about one hundred thousands ethnic Koreans
whose families were deported to the Soviet Kazakhstan almost eighty years ago from the Far East.
Stalin's repression politics regarding ethnic minorities who were living next to the borders has
significantly transformed identities of the deported people. How do Koreans in Kazakhstan
experience their ethnic and national identities in the context of multi–ethnic state? Living all my life
in Kazakhstan and being a third generation of ethnic Koreans living outside the place of ethnic
origin, I have never questioned my identities and have never thought how important it can be. In
order to investigate my own "quest for identity" in this

The Battle Of The Korean War
Considered one of the bloodiest battles of the Korean War, the Pork Chop Hill battle has been
compared to the Battle of Huế in Vietnam. By all accounts, the battle illustrates the enormous
courage of Army Soldiers that enabled their commanders to defend and secure a symbolic hill
despite suppressive fire from two divisions of the Chinese Communist Forces (CCF). Although there
were many battles fought in Pork Chop Hill during the Korean War, the battle that started in April
16, 1953 was one of the most gruesome battles documented in the history of the Korean War. This
battle analysis includes a description of the battle in operational terms (PMESII–PT; Army Doctrine
Publication 3–0) and the commander's decisions are critiqued relative to his ability to create a shared
understanding, use of mission orders, and accept prudent risk in accordance to the Army Doctrine
Publication 6–0 (2012).
Description of the Battle
A quote by Sun Tzu (1964) depicts the level of compliancy that engulfed Easy Company in April 16,
1953: "Engage people with what they expect; it is what they are able to discern and confirms their
projections. It settles them into predictable patterns of response, occupying their minds while you
wait for the extraordinary moment – that which they cannot anticipate."1 A review of multiple
sources revealed that Hill 255 or Pork Chop Hill was located in the southwest corner near the
Capital of Chorwon.2,3,4 The hill was surrounded by ridges and hills occupied by North

The Korean War

  • 1. The Korean War During the times of the 1950's the whole world was in a state of unrest, the downfall of Hitler in Europe had left an enormous swath of land that was half occupied by the allies and half occupied by the USSR(Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) which were communist. On the other side of the world in the pacific theater Japan had succumbed to the force of the United States and was defeated leaving all their conquered territory up for grabs. A specific region of interest that was given up by Japan were the Koreas which were divided into two countries that we know today as North Korea and South Korea. Conflicts erupted between both the communist north and the capitalist south, North Korea invaded South Korea and the United States had to step ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In North Korea, communism ruled supreme in government and in South Korea a more capitalist approach was prevalent in their government. . The spread of communism didn't stop and kept its march downward through the peninsula at a steady pace. "On June 25th, 1950 75,000 North Korean troops poured into South Korea which kick started the beginning of the Korean War. This lead to a civil war between North and South Korea which was soon brought to international attention when the U.S. came to the aid of South Korea and the Peoples republic of China (PRC) came to the aid of North Korea."1 The United States agreed that the spread of communism should not be allowed to continue its advance into South Korea, arriving to the decision that military action would be required. The Americans knew that the invasion of South Korea by North Korea was just a mask of the advance of communism into the region. "In July, just a few months after the wars beginning American troops landed in South Korea to help stop the invading force of North Koreans."2 The North Korean invasion came as an alarming surprise to American officials. As far as they were concerned, this was not simply a border dispute between two unstable dictatorships on the other side of the globe. Instead, many feared it was the first step in a communist campaign to take over the world. It was because of this reason that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Causes Of The Korean War The origins of the Korean War (War) are still a subject of research for many political scientists and historians who claim various reasons are responsible for the outbreak. It can be concluded that Kim Il–Sung is responsible for the start of the War as he commanded the invasion across the 38th parallel on June 25th, 1950. Interestingly in North Korea today students are taught that the War was started with the South invading the North. The roles of foreign players such as the China, Japan, the U.S., and the USSR, are all factors which led to the War. First, I will analyse the argument put forth by Hye Jin (Hailey) Park in Influence of Foreign Intervention or Civil Conflicts of North and South Koreans, that the root causes for the War were civil issues such as nationalism and pride; but, these issues were overshadowed by international conflicts. Then I will analyse the arguments put forth by Sergei N. Goncharov, John W. Lewis, and Xue Litai in Uncertain Partners: Stalin, Mao, and the Korean War who argue that without Kim's persuasion of the USSR and China the invasion of South Korea would not have taken place. This will be followed by the similarities between the arguments, theories which relate to War, and my conclusion. THE SPLITTING OF THE KOREAN PENINSULA The Korean Peninsula comprises of two nations the communist Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korea), and the capitalist Republic of Korea (South Korea). The division took place in 1945 when the Korean ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

This is because when two sides have completely different ideologies, mass conflict easily sparks from just a small dispute. These conflicting ideologies were the causes for the two most powerful countries during the time period to battle against each other through the Korean War. The two sides, having completely different opinions on how to unify Korea lead to a dispute that would last three years as a war and cause large losses for both sides14. • 7. Winter Wave : The Korean Wave And The Korean Wave Samantha Shek Professor Ku AAAS 480J November 6, 2017 The Korean Wave, otherwise also known as Hallyu, is a phenomenon that originated from Korea and traveled all over the world. Thirty years back, no one would have known what "saranghaeyo" or what "oppa" meant. But now, people are taking Korean classes to learn the language and culture and non natives are able to understand a whole episode of Korean drama without subtitles. One would argue that the drama Winter Sonata initiated the Korean Wave. Winter Sonata is a television series that incorporates a blend of romance and slice of life with the classic first love kind of storyline. However, on the same year something else was released. It is the music video "Gangnam Style" by Jaesang ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The audience was much more interactive with the content. They would sub the music video so lyrics would be accessible in their home country where Korea is not their national language. Also, fans and content creators would film remakes and parodies of "Gangnam Style". With the release of "Gangnam Style" led to the spread of it via social media and recreations which made it more entertaining for other people to watch and spread around even more (Jung and Shim). For example, concerts tend to be more fun when the singer points the microphone to the crowd and let them sing the lyrics along with him or her. "Gangnam Style" stimulated involvement with the fanbase with the dancing; which many people do when they hear the song. Furthermore, "Gangnam Style" impacted the position of being Asian in America specifically. While PSY did make the music video, the music video ultimately made him famous in the states. Many people recognized him and even Justin Bieber's manager had expressed thoughts of possibly signing a contract (Jung and Li). There is more interest in Korean pop music and desire to learn more about Korea. With the interest in Kpop, Asians feel more comfortable and confident in their background. With more people wanting to understand what it is like to be Asian, there forms a link between Asians and the rest of the world (Ng). The shift really begins to roll with "Gangnam Style". • 9. Causes Of The Korean War The Cold War was the catalyst for global transformation. The war of words between the United Soviet Socialist Republic (USSR), and the Western powers became much more when an outbreak of war struck, engaging both North and South Korea on opposing sides. The USSR and the USA were both responsible for the Korean War as their belligerent opinions on the spread of communism throughout the Cold War surfaced on Korean soil in the form of tanks and armed men. From the beginning of the war both the USA and the USSR took advantage of the tension that they caused within Korea and used the conflict as an outlet for their abhorrence of one another's beliefs. Both countries influence over the North and the South lead to the adoption of their own ideologies (communism and capitalism) and in a domino effect began the Korean War. The result of the war did nothing to quell or endorse the USSR's and the USA's opposing ideologies and has had lasting effects that are still in existence today. Only five years after the end of World War II, the invasion of South Korea by North Korea brought forth yet another corporal confrontation in the wake of a war– torn world. The political strain and hostility of the two major superpowers in the world violently erupted and began the Korean War. The repossessing of Korea from Japan's rule was the product of the allied forces success in World War II; though caused a permanent rift within the country as attempts at unification failed, thus the creation of the ... Korean Ancestry Scholarship I am applying to the Korean Ancestry Grant on the basis that it is a fantastic opportunity that could potentially support my goal towards striving higher education. In matters on why this scholarship applies with me, I have Korean ancestors/relatives on the fact that I was born in Seoul, South Korea and lived there for around 3 to 4 years. We moved to the United States for my father's new job, but we are generally able to keep in touch with our relatives with the advances in technology, specifically, a phone specifically meant for South Korea as well as using face–time apps that were also available. Not only that, but we do get to revisit Korea from time to time, especially during summer vacation when the time works best for us. I will admit, that every time we go back, I expect to feel out of place and walk in the streets as a tourist rather than someone who lived there, and there are always time where I wonder what life would be like if my family stayed in Korea rather than leave for the life we have now. Education is a solid foundation in today's society that has inspired the minds of countless generations that built our world into what it is today, whether they be engineers, doctors, teachers, innovators, or leaders in whatever they do, their impact on the world wouldn't have been possible if not for the education that they have ... • 13. The World Of The Korean War Before the Korean War took place, a significant historical event that led to the partitioning of Korea into two is the later part of the Japanese occupation, where Japan colonized Korea during World War II. Korea was under Japanese control for 35 long years, from 1910 to 1945. The nation was able to gain its independence when Japan surrendered on August 15 in 1945. The main factor which aided Korea towards freedom from Japan was the Allies of World War II, also known as the United Nations today. The Allies included 20 nations, with the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and the United Kingdom being the larger entities. The Allies joined forces against the Axis powers, which mainly comprised Germany, Italy and Japan, who were trying to protect nations against communism (promoted by the Soviet Union and China) and plutocratic–capitalism (promoted by the United States). On August 6, 1945, the United States launched its first atomic bomb attack on Japan in the city of Hiroshima, causing devastating effects to the city. On August 9, 1945, the United States launched their second atomic bomb attack on Japan in another city, Nagasaki, while the Soviet Union invaded Manchukuo, which was under Japanese control at that time. The series of events left Japan in a state of shock and bewilderment that they had no choice but to surrender to the Allied forces. Essay on South Korean Culture South Korea is one of the most homogeneous countries in the world, in which it has its own culture, language, and customs that are different from other Asian countries. South Korea's social structure revolves around the individual's professional, family, and education background. • 24. Korean, Korean And South Korea Essay "Korean is one of the world 's oldest living languages, and its origins are as obscure as the origin of the Korean people." (Hallen) Since it's origins, the Korean language has been puzzling to westerners unfamiliar with this literally foreign language. Most Americans are familiar with Korea and it's divide because of the Korean war in the 1950's, yet their culture and language are not as acknowledged as they should be. Although Korean is only an official language in North and South Korea, people speak it all over the world. To unlock the mystery of Korean, it is necessary to look not only at it's geographic and social elements, but also the structure of the language, including its alphabet and numerical system, and in doing so myself I was able to gain a new respect for the language. As mentioned above, Korean is primarily spoken in North and South Korea with 72 million people, however it expands far beyond it's tiny peninsula. In China, two million people speak Korean as their fist language and 700,000 people in Japan. This is logical considering Korea sits right between the two nations. This also explains the heavy influence both nations have on the language. Other nations where Korean is spoken as a first language include the United States with two million speakers, and the Russian regions of Kazhstan and Uzbekistan with 500,000 speakers. (Korean Language History) In the United States, Korean is the third most spoken language in Virginia and Georgia. (Wideopencountry) ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

I have not participated in any Korean extracurricular clubs because of the fact that I participate in many other clubs such as chess, health and fitness, code interactive, and board game club. However, I have participated in Ms. Kang's Movie nights in 9th grade. In these movie nights, we would watch Korean movies in order to expose us to Korean lifestyles and improve our ability to better listen to Korean. Through these movie nights I learned of the vast differences between Koreans and Americans. One very important difference being Korean's importance in respect. Korean people are respectful to everyone they meet and are happy to do so. There are even two ways to talk in Korean that are considered respectful, those being informal polite and formal polite. In my everyday life I see Americans disrespect one another for the smallest things such as a little accidental push, or forgetting their name. However, in these movies I noticed how passionate and excited both are on their culture. Korean people become siblings in their Chuseok, just as Americans thank everyone and everything for their lives in Thanksgiving. One time in the past where I exemplified maturity was in the final days on the France trip. My group had just finished eating dinner from a restaurant about 8 blocks away from the hostel. Each and every one of us were happy to be walking in the streets of France in such a beautiful night. However, when 3 of the other members in the group began to run, leaving me and ... • 30. Korean Transnationalism Throughout Korea's history, there are many instances in which lead to a cultural exchange between the Korean people and foreigners. This exchange is what leads to the trans–nationalistic nature of Korea. The biggest occurrence that led to transnationalism along with a struggle in transnational identity is that of the Japanese Colonial Occupation over Korea from 1910–1945. This occupation of Korea was not just so Japan can follow the colonizing efforts of western governments, but also the complete assimilation of the Korean people. This assimilation ideology was called Naisen Ittai and is known as the unification of the Japanese and Korean people. Though, this mainly meant the creation and enforcement of rules or policies to slowly turn the Korean populace into becoming as Japanese as they could. This Naisen Ittai implemented by the Japanese government lead to the cultural and self–identity struggles many Koreans obtained while trying to balance the notion of becoming Japanese while retaining their Korean heritage. However, some Koreans did not struggle at all with this notion, as some embraced the Japanese assimilation, and others completely opposed it. Those who embraced it known as collaborators and are seen as traitors to the Korean People. These clashing ideals and identity brought up upon Naisen Ittai can be found throughout many Korean works of literature and film. On June 25, 1950, the Korean War began when the North Korea, supported by the Soviet union and China, invaded South Korea, which was supported by the United States. In 1950, Syngman Rhee, the president of South Korea at that time, boasted that he was going to attack North Korea but they were attacked by North Korea instead. In 1949, Kim Il Sung persuaded Stalin and Mao Tse Tung to support an invasion of South Korea. This triggered for the war to happen. But the underlying reason was because it was just a continuation of the cold war though the US and the USSR weren't the ones fighting rather the North and South Korea. The US and the USSR were just using it to fight without having a hot war. Besides the causes, there were also positive and negative effects after the war ended. I sometimes confuse an affirmative response with a negative one because the usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean is different from English. For example, if I am asked, "Haven't you had dinner yet?" and I have not had dinner yet, then in Korean I usually say, "Yes, I haven't." But in English, I have to say, "No, I haven't." This different usage of "yes" and "no" in Korean and in English sometimes causes misunderstandings or even estrangements between my American friends and me. • 44. A Comparison Of The Korean Wave ( Hallyu In Korean? Korean wave (Hallyu in Korean) is term coined by Chinese media to describe the popularity of the Korean cultural products in China. It is said that the first wave of Hallyu is brought by Korean TV series that became a huge hit in China and Japan in mid 1990s. Two dramas, What Is Love About (1997) and Stars in My Heart (1999), are usually credited with kickstarting the Korean wave (Huat, 2012). In the early to mid–2000s, two more dramas, Winter Sonata (2002) and Dae Jang Geum (2003), catalyzed the Korean wave by shattering ratings records, not only in South Korea, but also in China, Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, and Vietnam (Chen, 2016). In Japan, the single Korean drama that made a huge impact was Winter Sonata starring Bae Yong Jun shown in 2003 (Chua, 2008). The drama specifically Bae Yoong Jun was able to establish a strong fan base of middle–age women in Japan. He even earned the title 'Yon–sama' and 'Lord Yong'. After the Korea dramas, it is said that the second wave of Hallyu is brought by the Korean popular music or K–pop. Same with the dramas, it also started in China and Japan. It later then spread to South East Asia mostly in Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Philippines and now reaching United States, Europe, and Latin America. Korean boy band H.O.T. gathered a huge fan base and topped the music charts in China and Taiwan in 1998. Other Korean boy groups such as NRG and Shinhwa and girl group Baby V.O.X have also held concerts in China. In Japan, which is the world's second largest music market after the U.S, albums by Korean idol groups have performed greatly in the charts almost as soon as they are released. In 2002, solo artist BoA's debut album topped Japan's Oricon Weekly Chart (Shim, 2006). Other popular Korean groups such as Tohoshinki have placed No.1 on Japan's top music chart Oricon competing with the local Japanese music. Even the songs produced in Korean also place high in the charts despite its language proving the strong fan base that the groups have created in Japan. There are numerous factors that need to be considered when examining the causes of the Korean War, such as the way the Korean peninsula came to be North and South Korea, the role Korea played during the Cold War, the type of governments that were put into place after the North and South were separated, and the support that was provided to the North and South by other countries. The United States also did not want the Soviet Union to strengthen their hold in the Pacific with the fear of communism spreading across the world. This caused tensions between the two countries that would bleed over to the commencement of the Korean War and aggravated Cold War relation between the world's two superpowers. The Korean War had a profound effect on the Cold War. The USSR and U.S. provided a lot of support for North and South Korea during and after the war based on the agendas of Moscow and Washington. After World War II, with the divided of Germany and Korea, the Cold War had started. America backed by the United Nations wanted free governments in the world and the Soviet Union want to have control over the world under communist governments. The Soviets saw the United Nations as a threat in Europe and the same can be said for the Korean peninsula. (Encyclopedia, 2016) Both superpowers of the world had their own visions of how the world should look. This is why the Cold War influence the Korean War, because without the battle of communism versus capitalism, the Korean War might not have happened, or would have played out very differently. The cause of the tension in Korea started with the inconclusive split of the country, but the two governments that were put into place after World War II fueled the fire for the start of the Korean War. • 48. Korean War : The Main Causes Of The Korean War The Korean War happened between June 25, 1950– July 27, 1953. I believe that the main cause for the Korean war was to have only one Korea. Over 6,000,000 men, soldiers, and sailors fought in the Korean War. The people on one side had 3 million people that were from North Korea, China, and Russia. On the opposing side were 3 million people from South Korea and from 21 United Nation countries including Australia. The immediate cause of the Korean War was that North Korea, led by a Communist government, invaded South Korea. One of the other factors, that helped cause the conflict was the Japanese occupation of Korea. The United States then responded by pushing a resolution U.N.'s SC( Security Council) calling for military assistance to South Korea. When Harry S. Truman found out he did the 'police action'. The 'police action' was when Harry S. Truman rapidly dispatched U.S. land, air, and sea forces to Korea. Then, the South Korean people and the U.S. marched into North Korea where it prompted Chinese forces in the late 1950's. In 1953, North Korea and the United States signed a ceasefire which ended the conflict. The cease fire agreement also put South and North Korea back where they were in the beginning of the conflict" According to (http://www.history.com/this–day–in–history/korean–war– begin. ) While the Korean War was going on, the Cold War was also going on as I have already said. By all accounts, the battle illustrates the enormous courage of Army Soldiers that enabled their commanders to defend and secure a symbolic hill despite suppressive fire from two divisions of the Chinese Communist Forces (CCF). Although there were many battles fought in Pork Chop Hill during the Korean War, the battle that started in April 16, 1953 was one of the most gruesome battles documented in the history of the Korean War. This battle analysis includes a description of the battle in operational terms (PMESII–PT; Army Doctrine Publication 3–0) and the commander's decisions are critiqued relative to his ability to create a shared understanding, use of mission orders, and accept prudent risk in accordance to the Army Doctrine Publication 6–0 (2012).
