2. BACKGOUND INFORMATION
The Nation of Korea was ruled by Japan from 1910 until the
end of WWII. After the soviets declared war on Japan in
agreement with a treaty that they had signed with America
earlier, they helped Korea gain independence from Japan. In
the mean time the soviets ad started to occupy the north of
Korea and the United States of America occupied the south.
Subsequently the north became a Communist state because
of the influences from the USSR and China and the South
became democratic due to the political influences of
America.
3. This is a map of what
Korea looked like
before North Korea
invaded, Territories
were taken and lost
multiple times often
numerous times in a
month. The individual
battles cost lots of
civilian causalities
4. In this time both the north and south of Korea had set up
governments and both claimed to be the legitimate one.
Neither sides had agreed to the border that had been put into
place, this lead a conflict where on June 25th 1950 the North
Korean forces backed by the Soviet Union and the Chinese,
invaded South Korea.
The very same day the United Nations classified this as an
invasion and immediately called for a ceasefire. Later the UN
dispatched peacekeeping forces from over 21 countries with
the U.S contributing to over 88% of personnel. This eventually
lead America to enter the conflict
6. The USA, The USSR and China were butting heads,
both sides trying their hardest to make sure that their
ideology of the future Korea was the outcome. Already
the USA and Russia had been budding heads across
Europe both nations trying to persuade countries to join
their sides, America was able to spread their concept of
democracy and freedom and The USSR was franticly
trying to convince anyone who was willing to listen to
the concept of Communism and equality for all. The
USSR had already convinced the people of China that
Communism was the right choice as they were the
elected government at the time. With both the USA and
the USSR trying to preach what they considered the
right choice in terms of setting up a country, the threat
of war was not far off.
7.
8. With the USSR and China backing north Korea with both weapons and
soldiers in the case of China, the UN had to step in to ensure that the
civilian causalities were kept to a minimum, unsuccessfully the majority of
the people killed in this conflict were civilians who were simply caught in
the cross fire. Thousands of people were killed and millions displaced by
the conflict.
9. A vast majority of the world was influenced by either the
communist side or the democratic side, but the USSR
had managed to gain influence over in China where
communism was easily accepted, so in the eyes of the
Soviets allowing a democratic government in Korea was
a threat to their ideals of Communism, they felt as
though the democratic government of South Korea
could have influenced countries that have converted
into communism to change sides. So out of desperation
the Soviets along with the Chinese authorized the
assault on South Korea, beginning a war that would
cost thousands of lives.
10. The Americans were also desperate to win over the
minds of Korean leaders to try and bring them to the
ideals of Democracy, which is why they were so
desperate to make Korea a democracy, as Korea was
close to Japan and America had just won a war there
they wanted to solidify this area with their ideologies.
11. Even though the war is over the effects still last on not only in political
situations but also in social and economical terms. North Korea is now a
waste land there is almost no nourishment for its people and is one of the
poorest countries in the world. Where it’s neighbor south Korea is one of
the richest in the world, trading internationally and allying itself with
America. The Korean war showed the world how close it was to total
chaos in the form of all out war. The Korean war has caused North Korea to
be a nation that is boycotted by most nations and for North Korea to be
listed as a hostile nation by the USA and the UK.
Now days South Korea has rebuilt the destruction of the war and as the
memories of the war fades rumors of opening up borders with the North are
eminent but maybe in the distant future possible
