Beaumains promises King Arthur that he will rescue Lady Lyones or die trying. Lady Linet mocks Beaumains for being a kitchen boy despite his armor and knighthood. As they approach a bridge, they encounter two knights guarding it. Beaumains tells the knights he comes in peace if they let them pass, but for war if they bar the way.

1 [The curtain rises as Beaumains and Lady Linet ride on horseback through a forest.l
2 LADY LINET: [Haughtily.] You, saucy churl! Your suit of armor does not fool me. You, who have noname, have been dubbed Beaumains, for you beg for scraps in the kitchen like a common peasant.
3 BEAUMAINS: [Courteously.] Damsel, ye may say what ye will to me, but I shall achieve thisadventure for you. I gave King Arthur my word that I will rescue your sister, Lady Lyones, or I will diein the trial of it.
4 LADY LINET: You will finish my adventure-you will come to our aid! Fie on thee, thou arrogantkitchen boy! You may think you are too good for King Arthur's kitchen, but you wilt not look on theface of my sister.
5 [ The curtain falls.]
SCENE 2
6 [As the curtain rises, Beaumains and Lady Linet approach a bridge guarded by two knights.]
7 LADY LINET: Now, Sir Kitchen Knight, what sayest thou? Art thou a match for these two knights, orwilt thou not turn back?
8 BEAUMAINS: [Quietly.] I would not turn back if they were six.
9 BLACK KNIGHT: Do you come in peace or for war?
10 BEAUMAINS: If thou allow us to pass, in peace. If thou bar the way, for war.
