Analyzing
Drama
Including : Tone, Mood and Irony
The author of a play is called a playwright.
Acts and Scenes
Scenes are used to build suspense or comic relief.
Act 1
(like a chapter of a book)
Scene 1 Scene 2 Scene 3
A scene contains one setting where the action happens. Characters may be
introduced or leave, but the setting doesn’t change in a scene.
These are read as Act 1 - Scene 1, Act 1 - Scene 2…so on.
Purpose for Drama Structures
• Dramatic Action increases the suspense of the story through the
actions of the characters and events
• Acts break the play up into sections, may change settings or time.
Scenes are the smaller sections inside of an act that build suspense,
provide comic relief (a break from the tension).
• The purpose of a plays structure (acts and scenes) is to break up the
story into smaller parts, build suspense and to allow for setting
changes.
• Frozen Lighthearted Edition
• Frozen Dark Edition

Sherlock Holmes Trailer
How authors create tone:
Connotation and Denotation
Connotation – The meaning can be positive, negative or neutral,
having no connotation
Mood Words
“As her tears fell onto
the empty page, she
cried knowing that the
words in her broken
heart would never bring
her the forgiveness she
prayed for.”
