Unfinished Business Lecture - Design Fiction: Provoking the Future by Making It (September 29, 2010 from 5:45 pm to 7:30 pm)
Unfinished Business Events are designed by Torch Innovation and Normative Design and sponsored by the Strategic Innovation Lab at OCAD.
Could we have had the iPhone without Star Trek? Can we create the next innovation without thinking about other possible worlds? What are we making out of our imaginations that will shape what’s next? As an emerging area of thought and practice, Design Fiction provides us with a way of “thinking about doing what we see and imagine”. By making models or prototypes of the future, we expose, test and probe further into it, exploring scenarios as use cases, as they are assumptions about the future made reality. Scott Smith of Changeist will take us on a journey to see where Design Fiction has come from, its impact on a generation unwittingly raised on it, and how designers, creatives, strategists, and other future-minded professions among us are applying it to actively provoke possible futures that we prefer.

A gentle introduction to the Semantic Web, with a focus on solving practical problems in the cultural heritage domain. Discussed in the presentation are basic Semantic Web concepts, strategies for structuring unstructured data, natural language processing, and amalgamation of multiple source data stores using inferencing. These slides originally accompanied a presentation given at the 2008 Museum Computer Network conference by Koven J. Smith and Don Undeen of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC.

If you can picture this, you’ve been exposed, at some point in your life, to a fire engine. Now, imagine you hadn’t.
The shape of each person’s reality is determined by her individual experiences. This perspective determines what we do and don’t do, what is familiar or frightening, and how we engage with the world around us. Modern designers are expert in empathy; the danger of empathy alone is its dissolution of difference. Appropriately designed products, services, and policies come from acknowledging the unique and distinctive realities of others. Lauren will be sharing stories and frameworks on how she has reconciled these complexities of seeing in a variety of projects—from designing financial services for the rural poor in Myanmar to building strategies for corporate collaboration in Australia.

John Moravec is a scholar on the future of work and education. As founder of Education Futures, his current projects focus on the convergence of globalization, innovation society, and accelerating change in human knowledge development. He co-authored the book Aprendizaje Invisible ("Invisible Learning") (2011) and edited Knowmad Society (2013).
A talk presented at IBM's "Academy of Technology" exploring, in brief, what the research community has to learn from Watson (and the techniques derived therefrom) and some new research ideas that can be explored therefrom. All known proprietary information from either IBM or RPI has been removed from the original talk.
LegoViews: a LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ based interviewing technique.Patrizia Bertini
LegoViews is an innovative journalistic interviewing technique developed by Patrizia Bertini, Certified LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ facilitator. Starting from the theoretical framework of LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™, the LegoView technique allows new ideas and new concepts to emerge, providing original and new insights about the topics at hand. The Lego-interviewing technique has been tested in highly sensitive contexts, including Palestine, Israel and the Occupy LSX movement, and it has also been used to provide new insights on specific concepts, like art, creativity, colour and architecture by involving artists, architects, professionals and thinkers.
The presentation was given during the LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ Certified facilitators' Annual Meeting in Billund (Denmark) on April 7th 2013.
The presentations draws from LSP workshops' and Lego-interviews' experiences to present similarities and differences and to highlight the high potential of a creative and constructive approach both to elicit new meanings and perspectives and to create new meanings. A final comparison between LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY™ and LegoViews completes the presentation, summarising more than 3 years' work and research in the field.

Much of the discussion about user experience design is focused on use, but there are additional issues to consider. In particular, issues of meaning. John will present the concept of Cultural Affordances—qualities of objects that help people to understand through the frame of their own past experience—and discuss the ways that we as designers can use cultural affordances to more effectively design for our audience.

Learning with technology as coordinated sociomaterial practice: digital liter...Martin Oliver
While considerable attention has been given to the concept of learning – what it is, how we might know it when we see it, and how to intervene in it – by contrast, technology remains under-theorised. While theoretical approaches that have developed accounts of the relationship between technology and human action, few of these are well represented within educational technology or networked learning. This paucity of theorisation has resulted in simplistic accounts of the role of technology in various kinds of learning, usually involving some kind of causal or determining mechanism. Such accounts are vulnerable to critique (e.g. Friesen, 2009), but nonetheless remain prevalent.
In this paper, I will recap some of the problems with this position, and then consider alternatives that address issues around agency and the role of the social. Specifically, drawing on Mol’s concept of praxiology, developed in the context of work on the constitution of diseases in medical practice, I will explore alternative ways in which educational uses of technology can be understood. This value of this will be illustrated through the design of a study of digital literacies. Some implications of this include for researchers – including concerns about reflexivity – will then be drawn out.

Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
