 R. Christopher Goodwin, PhD, has written numerous professional journal articles about

Associates Inc., Dr. Goodwin has lectured widely on the issues of climate change and sea
level rise, and their effects. Dr. Goodwin also is actively involved in providing assistance
to municipal, regional and state governments in resilience planning for coastal historic

Climate change is the key contributor to global sea level rise. According to the Union of
Concerned Scientists, global warming is the reason for the loss of land-based ice. Up to
80 percent of the total increase in sea levels between 2003 and 2007 was caused by the
runoff of melting glaciers, ice sheets, and ice caps into the world’s oceans.
Another concern is thermal expansion, since the volume of water expandsas its
temperature rises. Though currently considered a secondary concern behind shrinking
ice levels, volumetric increase of oceanic waters is known to have been the key
contributor to the rise of sea levels following the industrial revolution of the 19th century.
