A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day Essay
A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day
In the story "Today Will Be a Quiet Day" written by Amy Hempel, one may be inclined to believe
that there is a tone of depression or sadness among the father and the two children. This is shown in
the opening sentence, while the three are stalled in traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. The boy
states, "I think if the quake hit now the bridge would collapse and the ramps would be left" (Hempel
1202). We also learn that the boy had a best friend who committed suicide about a year before.
Finally, the fact that a mother is not mentioned leaves the reader with a suspicion that the parents
may be divorced, separated, or even worse, the mother may be deceased. Even though these
incidents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is shown throughout the car ride when the boy and girl are telling jokes, and the boy constantly
recites humorous bumper stickers. Another example of the father's attempt to have fun with his
children is his initial plan to attend the arm wrestling tournament. This is shot down by the children,
but they still find an interesting place to have a nice lunch. The day proved to be a fun and relaxing
day for the family, and hinted that less disastrous times are in store for them.
Next, the fact that the daughter has just received her driver's license is a step towards happier times.
Driving on her own is probably one of the most exciting times of her life, and she makes it known to
her family that she received the highest grade in the class. The father trusts her and lets her drive all
the way home, which raises her confidence and shows the trusting relationship between the father
and daughter. Another example which shows happier times coming to the family is when the father
tells the children that he has both good and bad news. He goes on to ask which would the children
prefer to hear first. The daughter immediately answers that she wishes to hear the bad first. This is
surprising to her father, but it shows that she is beginning to mature. The father is glad to hear that
the daughter can handle the bad news, when earlier the truth had to be hidden from her, like the
death of the dog. This shows how naive the daughter was in her younger years, and now that she has

Dreams of Trespass: Defining the Frontier Essay
Dreams of Trespass: Defining the Frontier
In Fatima Mernissi's widely acclaimed book Dreams of Trespass, the storyline weaves around the
tale of a young girls' life in a traditional Moroccan harem that is as much enchanting as it is
disparaging. As we follow the young girl from day to day and experience all the little trivialities of
her life, we notice that she is quite a precocious little child. She is constantly questioning, in fact, her
mother and aunts constantly tell her that she should stop asking questions all the time. At first
glance, it seems as if her questions are of little or no importance and that they are merely things any
young child would ask as they are stepping out into the real world. But upon closer examination, ...

The most obvious frontier for Mernissi is that of the harem, this is the same for most of the women
in the novel too:
Our house gate was a definite hudud, or frontier, because you needed permission to step in or out.
Every move had to be justified and even getting to the gate was a procedure (Mernissi, 21).
She slowly realizes that while she is off having fun with her cousins and Samir, the women of the
harem are slowly choking in the stale air. Mernissi's mother is probably one of the most powerful
women in the novel, who is constantly standing up to her father. One example of a way in which the
harem is a restrictive frontier and thorn in Mernissi's mother's side is the fact that all these families
have to live together, all struggling to gain their own individuality while constantly being suffocated
by one another:
Mother dreamed of living alone with Father and us kids. "Whoever heard of ten birds living together
squashed into a single nest?" she would say. "It is not natural to live in a large group, unless your
objective is to make people feel miserable." (Mernissi, 77).
Another aspect of how the harem dictates how one lives is the eating ritual that exist within the
walls:

Humorous Wedding Speech by Brother of Groom
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. On behalf of the bridesmaids, I must thank Donald for his kind
words. I must also thank all of you for coming today – I know how hard it is to get a day release.
As Donald's lighter brother – sorry, I meant little brother, which is simply a reference to the fact that
he is older than I am, and nothing else – I would also like to welcome Liz into the family. I think
you'll find the Endeans to be a warm and open family – but never play cards with any of us.

times when people only properly bathed once a year, typically during May when the weather ...

Mum explained that he'd eaten too much cake. So, if you see my dad later on with his arm around
Donald doing a circuit of the gardens, you know it'll be too much cake – or more like beer.
Someone asked me a few weeks ago if I looked up to my brother when I was younger. I thought
about this – for about 2 seconds – before stating that I thought Donald had been more a source of
perspiration than inspiration. But I'd hate for you all to think he didn't make an impression upon me.
Those at the front should just about be able to make out the two–inch scar on my head, caused by
Donald practicing his fast–bowling against his seven year–old brother.
In fact, Donald was always a great athlete and keen sportsmen, with a strong will to win. And I'm
sure he could have made it as a pro – had it not been for the change in law enabling pubs to open all

But it's easy for me to stand here and take the micky out of him – and it's also rather fun. But if the
truth be told, I was always very proud that he was my big brother.
And the pointers in life that he has given me have proved invaluable. Putting aside his number one

Essay about Hamlet 11
Why does Hamlet delay taking action against Claudius? This is a question that everyone want to
know. We all know that Hamlet want to kill his Uncle Claudius as soon as possible. But why does he
wait so long to sweep to his revenge? I believe that there are more than one reason why Hamlet
delays before he takes action.
One reason why Hamlet delays to take action against Claudius is because he does not just want to
kill him, but he wants to damn his spirit. He hates Claudius so much that he is willing to take his life
and damn his soul. Hamlet has plenty of motive to drive him to want this. Claudius did kill Hamlets

This is another reason why Hamlet delays on killing his Uncle.
In the last scene of the play Claudius makes a big plan to ensure Hamlets death. In this plan he
poisons a drink that is for Hamlet. He also helps make the sword fight one side and fatal to Hamlet.
But Claudius plan backfire in the biggest possible way. And he winds up pinioning his wife
Gertrude in which he loves dearly. And this gives Hamlet even more reason to kill Claudius.
I feel that this delay is justified because Claudius got what he deserved. Hamlet had every right to
kill Claudius. Claudius killed his own brother married his sister–in–law, stole Hamlets thrown, and
in the end kills Hamlets mother. Why does Hamlet delay taking action against Claudius? This is a

Kennedy had many accomplishments during his short presidency. One of these accomplishments
was in regards to the Cuban Missile Crisis. He played a lead role in figuring out how to settle this
with the Soviet Union. He also abolished the federal death penalty in 1962. He initiated Project
Apollo which ended up accomplishing landing the first humans on the moon between 1969–1972!
Lastly, he played a large part in stopping racism and segregation. He showed a lot of love and
sincerity with this and the American people appreciated and admired him for that. He highly
disagreed with segregation and focused on civil rights towards the end of his election. On June 11th,
1963, he delivered a televised speech stating his beliefs and presented a proposal for a new bill to be
passed. This bill would later be called the Civil Rights Act of 1964.
On November 22nd, 1963, President Kennedy had traveled to Dallas, Texas to participate in a
motorcade that was traveling to Dealy Plaza. He was sitting with his wife, Jacqueline on the back of
a convertible followed by his Vice President, Lyndon Johnson behind him. While he passed the
Texas School Book Depository, Lee Harvey Oswald set up a sniper post on the 6th story of the
building. Oswald allegedly fired three shots at Kennedy, one missing him and two striking him in
the neck and head. Sadly, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy passed away from his gunshot wounds
and his Vice President, Lyndon Johnson was sworn into office right away.

Jfk Influence On John F Kennedy
How did the upbringing of Jacqueline Kennedy affect her marriage to John F. Kennedy, and what
was the effect of his death on her? Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy once said, "One must not let oneself
be overwhelmed by sadness" (Anzia). Jackie Kennedy faced many tremendous ordeals in her
lifetime. When she was a child, her parents divorced, which was unusual for the time period. The
separation of her parents led Jackie to becoming closed off. She became substantially shy and did
not like to endure many social activities. When Jackie Kennedy was married to John F. Kennedy,
she had a miscarriage, a stillborn, and a baby who died shortly after birth. Jackie Kennedy also had
to face the death of her husband, from a communist killer. All the events ... Show more content on

However, some people believe she did not take her education or life seriously, "At times she did get
into mischief and would be sent to the headmistress, Miss Ethel Stringfellow, who wrote on her
report card: 'Jacqueline was given a D in Form because her disturbing conduct in her geography
class made it necessary to exclude her from the room'" ("Life"). Since Jackie Kennedy got into
mischief, some people would argue that she did not believe her education was important and she
could do anything she wanted. "Despite these hard times, Jackie Kennedy had many advantages and
opportunities in life. She took classical ballet lessons in the old Metropolitan Opera House. She
began taking lessons in French" ("Life"). Although, Jackie Kennedy was rebellious as a child, she
was very intelligent and had talent in a fine art. Being able to dance the ballet shows Jackie Kennedy
was very sophisticated and held herself with a regal posture. Her intelligence is shown through her
studying the language of French. Jackie Kennedy's childhood prepared her for her marriage to
Kennedy because during her junior year in college, Jackie Kennedy studied abroad in France
("Life"). She found through her abroad studies that she liked to travel. When she married Kennedy,
they traveled quite frequently on campaign trips. Her parents' divorce aided Jackie Kennedy in
coping with her husband's assassination because she learned how to handle with loss and grief in a
sophisticated manner. Jackie Kennedy's childhood shaped her into a sophisticated and intelligent

John F. Kennedy Essay
Among his many honors as President of the United States of America, John Fitzgerald Kennedy
remains the youngest man ever elected to the office of Chief Executive, and the youngest man to die
while still fulfilling his duties. Serving as America's President, John F. Kennedy held his office for
1000 days, dying November 22nd, 1963, assassinated at the age of 46.
John Fitzgerald Kennedy was born on May 29th, 1917 in Brookline, Massachusetts, the second son
of nine children of the wealthy Roman Catholic Kennedy family. Joseph Patrick Kennedy,
Kennedy's father, was a self–improving multi–millionaire who had built a financial empire through
projects in banking, the stock market, ship building and the film industry and liquor distribution. ...

That very thesis was later expanded into his best selling book, While England Slept.
As a youth, John F. Kennedy never sought a vocation in politics, but planned to become a journalist.
Joseph Kennedy, as head of the nation's Securities and Exchange Commission and a U.S.
Ambassador, coached his eldest son, Joe, to move on and increase his family's political tradition. Joe
and John Kennedy both enlisted in the armed forces during World War II, John joining the U.S.
Navy in 1941.
In 1943, while appointed to the South Pacific as the commander of a torpedo boat, John Kennedy
was nearly killed in combat when his PT 109 ship was rammed and sunk by an enemy ship. The 26–
year–old Kennedy, though badly wounded, was able to bring his existing crew through miles of
harsh waters to shelter, an act which earned him the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps Medal for
Heroism. Kennedy's injuries seriously aggravated an old back injury, and although what proved to
be chronic pain, he returned to active duty and served until 1945. Kennedy's older brother Joe, the
successor apparent to the Kennedy's political tradition, did not endure the war.
Once stateside, John Kennedy was able to momentarily chase a journalism career as a reporter for
the Hearst Newspapers, but was steered into politics by Joseph Kennedy. In 1947, John F. Kennedy

The Symbolism of Death in Alistair McLeod’s "The Lost Salt...
In Alistair McLeod's collection of short stories the Lost Salt Gift of Blood; death seems to be a
constant companion. Death is important and perhaps even symbolic in this collection of short
stories. It is important because it has the power to affect people and relationships, invokes freedom
and even predetermines ones future, through the death of animal's people and the impending death
of others. The first story "In the Fall" consists of 2 deaths, the death of a horse and a death of
chickens both with very different effects on people. The first death was the death of a horse who was
a very close companion or more like an old family friend to the family but with age Scott the horse
had grown old and incapable of farm work. The mother ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For a long time their marriage had been held together by responsibility, after the chickens die their
relationship changes. "My father puts his arms around my mother's waist and he does not move it as
I have always seen her do."(p. ) In this story 2 different deaths cause 2 totally different impacts on
people and relationships within the story. In another story by McLeod called "The Boat" the death of
the father liberates his spirit and frees his son from obligated responsibility. When the father dies his
own spirit is freed from his nagging wife, she always nagged on him because "... he was a failure as
a husband and father who retained none of his own."(p. ) His wife was controlling and he was
burdened by her; dying in a sense liberated him. The father's dying also freed the son from obligated
responsibility. The son felt he had to stay because he loved his father very much and he thought it
was "...very much braver to spend a life doing what you really do not want rather then selfishly
following forever your own dreams and inclinations." (p. ) After the father's death the son was free
to return to his own life and follow his own dreams. In the story "The Road to Rankings Point"
death predetermines a young mans future. The young man Calum, has only been given a few months
to live. He was living in Toronto but decided to go home to Cape Breton to live with his grand
mother who is also unsure of her death. Calum's grand mother loves him

Essay about Go Ask Alice By Anonymous
Teenagers of every race, religion, and clique relate deeply to the words of the anonymous teenager
within the book Go Ask Alice, by an anonymous girl whose life enters a place where, as most
teenagers, she has no idea who to turn to, or where to go. "Oh dear god, help me adjust, help
me be accepted, help me belong, don't let me be an outcast and a drag on my family,"
(Anonymous, 13). With these words, we are accepted into the girl's life, and into her heart and mind.

about her life, and her diary is like a best friend. It is someone she can spill all of her secrets to and

Once this girl started with the drugs, she could not stop. As soon as she tried the first drug, it lead to
all of the other drugs and things that she did. Her first time doing the drug was an accident, and she
did not know, but she made the wrong choice in continuing to do them. She said it gave her a feeling
of belonging and love that she had never felt before. If her parents or her close friends had paid
more attention to her, then some of the events that happened would not have happened. Her heavy
drug use lead to her runaway from home to the streets, involvement in crime, her prostitution, and
her visit to the insane asylum. She found a "best friend" (Chris) – one that would give
her drugs – and they decided to runaway and leave their family and friends to start their own shop in
San Francisco. They thought they could not handle their parents telling them what is right and what
is wrong, but that is what they needed to hear. They were naive in thinking they could live their lives
alone without any rules or any authority.
This teenager caused a lot of stress on her family and friends. When she ran away, she never realized
that her parents and siblings would spend their time worrying about her. It caused them stress and
depression because of her negative behavior. She was inconsiderate to her most loved people, her
grandma and grandpa. They truly cared about her and they were let down by the life she was living.

Critical Evaluation of 1 Child Policy in China
The policy was started in 1979, due to the population dramatically increasing to an estimated 1

with feeding this population. The country is Communist and the ideas of the party were to show to
the World how brilliant the vision of Communism was. For this, it could not ask other countries for

The Second Tradition of Thanksgiving Essay
When the great holiday of Thanksgiving comes to mind, most people think of becoming total
gluttons and gorging themselves with a seemingly unending amount of food. Others might think of
the time spent with family and friends. The whole basis of the holiday is family togetherness,
fellowship, and thankfulness for blessings received during the previous year.
Every family has their own unique way of spending time together with loved ones only seen during
the holidays. In the Stock home, there is only one thing we enjoy doing. Sure, like every other

After all a truly intelligent mind could be playing video games or running around endlessly with
your cousins playing your own football games and other sports. I followed this train of thought for
many Thanksgivings, until the point when I realized that I did not have an inextinguishable amount
of energy any more, and that I could not be part of that much physical activity without feeling as old
as my father the next morning. So after weighing these problems, I realized that the men in my
immediate family and I should really consider spending time with family members we do not see on
a regular basis. I have never been particularly close with any one in my extended relation, so I
figured what better way strengthen my relationship with my family than to share in this excellent
tradition. (Stock)
I sat with these guys and started discussing actual topics, more than "Hey, how you doing?" and
ending the conversation there. I realized I have a lot more interesting relatives with similar interests
than I expected.
So, after a few quarters and a lot of snacks we lay back and relax from that stuff in turkey. It is
unbelievable how many snacks a "stuffed" person can eat even after a huge dinner. While watching
a football game a full stomach does not register. As the afternoon slowly turns into night, we sink

Gay Men and Adoption Debate Essay
Gay Men and Adoption Debate
My investigation is based on the issue 'should gay men be allowed to adopt'.
My aims are:
(1) To find out how the media portray gay adoption
(2) To uncover the attitudes of the general public toward gay adoption.
I am interested in this issue because I believe that it is unfair that gay people suffer more prejudice
than straight people when adopting a child. I think they should just be given the same checks as
straight people.
My first aim links into the parts of the syllabus; The Media and Power and Authority.
My second aim links in with The Family, Power and Authority, The Media and Stratification and
Differentiation.
The common ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Ultimately the contemporary family is more diverse. Today, more than in the past, gay couples are
more widely accepted, but there is still a longstanding taboo hanging over the idea of two men
bringing up a child. This is less so where there are two women, because they do not need to adopt,
and people also believe that it is women's natural goal to bring up a child. The debate over gay men
adopting is fuelled by the media who often make people scared of the idea.
Methodology ===========
For this investigation I used a number of methods to create my report. When distributing my
questionnaires I first used a pilot questionnaire to test my style of questions. From this study I found
that some of my questions were badly worded or contained spelling mistakes. This turned out to be
very helpful as a lot of my questions were very badly worded and could cause some confusion.
When writing my questionnaire, I was careful not to include any questions that may cause offence to
my interviewees. The subject, 'Finding out the publics attitudes to gay adoption' could raise some
problems. For example it was difficult to ask peoples sexuality because to many people that is a very
sensitive and private issue. I also accepted that asking peoples religion was too much of a personal
question. I realise that these questions

Martha pushed Jack and Jackie together on the couch, served them cocktails and hors d'oeuvres and
let them drink their heads off. Charles Bartlett says that he had nothing to do with it, his wife was
the only matchmaker involved in this scheme. This was not the only time that they met at the
Bartlett's home. When they started dating regularly they sometimes met there for a game of bridge,
Checkers, or Monopoly.      Jack telephoned Jackie in London one
day and proposed marriage. The engagement was announced in June 24, 1953 and the wedding was
set for September 12, 1953. (Davis 316) Joe Kennedy made sure that the wedding was well

Christmas, 2009 Essay
Since I was a child I have always been very excited and waiting patiently for Christmas to arrive
because I always thought on Christmas as an occasion when the family gets together. And this past
year (2009) was not different from the others; I was very excited waiting for Christmas. Especially,
because I was going to spend this holiday in Mexico with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins,
but all that emotion did not take me to a Christmas full of joy as the past years. Christmas was very
important to me because it was Camila's (my daughter) first time in Mexico, but after this holiday,
the way I appreciated and treated my family changed. After Christmas 2009, I learned to value my
mom and dad; I also learned to understand how important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

When I saw my brothers and mom boarding the plane, it felt to me as if a piece of my heart was
leaving with them, in the same plane. However, in the midst of this feeling, there was also some
comprehension because I knew that there was no other option to prevent this separation. I saw the
three of them walking heading to the plane with destination to Colorado; far, very far away from me
and the rest of my family. During their walk to the plane, each one of those steps they gave were like
laughs of joy that were leaving out with the rhythm of their steps. So, step after step were just as less
and less joy, until I could not see my mom and brothers anymore and that was when I let my sadness
came out accompanied with tears. That moment completely changed the emotion with which I
expected Christmas. It was as if the girl who waited impatiently for Christmas had disappeared
along with the laughter of joy that disappeared following the rhythm of the footsteps of my mom
and brothers walking to board the plane.
Christmas evening! Another lesson that this holiday taught me was to value more my mom and my
dad because it was so hard to feel how life is without my parents. I say this because in Christmas
day I decided to stay with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins from my mom's side, but my dad
told me that he was going to spend this holiday with his mom and the rest of his family. When I
heard those words coming out of his mouth was like if his words

A Night in Afghanistan Essay
"Shhhh!" my mother whispered as the tanks rumbled by under the cold Afghan night, the stars
twinkling above the mountains surrounding us. From our hiding place in the brush along the
shoulder of the dirt path through the Khyber Pass, I could see tanks stretching to infinity and, try as I
might, I could not find an end to the convoy of trucks. Huddled along with my father, mother, and
infant brother and sister, we peered anxiously as the Russian Spetsnaz scouts rolled past us in jeeps
ahead of the convoy heading toward the Afghanistan–Pakistan border–the very place our destination
lay.
My brother began to whimper. My mother began to pray. It seemed as if the line of tanks would

As dawn approached with a faint hint of turquoise along the horizon in front of us and we finally
sighted Peshawar–the border village in Pakistan–in the distance, my thoughts were not of the next
step in our journey, but of the steps already behind us. I knew nothing of war, politics, or
Communism. All I could grasp was that I was leaving the only home I had known for the first three
and a half years of my life for an unknown, an abstraction, a void that held neither the warmth nor
the familiarity of my home in the suburbs outside Kabul. Behind me, just beyond the bend in the
road and miles away, were my friends, my teachers, and the only feeling of security I had ever
known. Ahead of me lay the worst kind of fear–fear of the unknown. All I knew was that we were
traveling to a place called America. After an 18–month waiting period in Pakistan, we were
permitted to enter the United States and on March 21, 1983, a plane carrying my mother, father,
brother, sister, and myself landed at Los Angeles International Airport, completing our long journey.
Yet through all my experiences, the years have not wiped from my consciousness the memories of
the final hours before our crossing of the border that cold September night. My father left behind our

Cinderella In Therapy Essay
Cinderella in Therapy
In the movie "Cinderella," Cinderella is a maid to an evil stepmother and two very heartless and
obnoxious stepsisters. The only reason that Cinderella still puts up with their orders is an example of
the Behavioral perspective. The Behavioral Perspective puts emphasis on learning by experience
with rewards and punishments. She knows that if she does not do the chores, she will be punished or
thrown out of the household. She does not have anywhere to go because her mother and father have
passed away. Because Cinderella is a genuinely kind human being who wishes to please, she usually
does not stick up for herself against the others in the household. She is used to taking on the brunt of

She is very kind to all creatures, whether it be animals or humans. Cinderella takes it upon herself to
robe, feed, and befriend the animals of the house. She takes care of her evil stepmother and
stepsisters because she is good at heart, and she will put up with their torture to help them. She
could choose not to help them, or just to leave, but she knows that she won't have anything left, and
they need her. It is because of this pure, perfect attitude that the prince falls in love with her
instantly, and not with the other girls that just want to be with the prince for superficial reasons. Her
effervescent kind–heartedness that prevails through her hardships is an example of the humanistic
perspective. The humanistic perspective views behavior as controlled by the decisions that people
make about their lives based on their perceptions of the world. It's a view in which personality is
seen as developing through an actualizing tendency which unfolds in accordance with each person's
unique perceptions of the world.
There are some small parts in the movie that infer what Cinderella wants through her dreams. This
would be an example of psychoanalysis which is a method that seeks to help gain insight into one's
mind by recognizing and understanding unconscious thoughts and emotions. She mentions that she
dreams at night of finding someone who will take her away from the house she is spending her days
in now.

The Bad Luck Kennedys Essay
The Kennedy family, the quintessential all–American family, filled with some of the country's best

Jackie Kennedy Character Analysis
The 5 traits of personality consists of openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and
neuroticism. The 5 trait model began from the research of D. W. Fiske and was expanded even more
by other researchers as well. This Big–Five trait model is important due to the fact that it gives
human path and logic of what makes up a person's character trait, personality, and much more. The
answer to finding what makes an ethical leader is the fact that most of them contain all of the Big–
Five traits. Many studies and different analyses have studied and research why an ethical leader
needs the Big–Five traits and why it is effective through leadership (Kalshoven, Hartog, Hoogh
350). One person that was known as an ethical leader and exemplified openness, conscientiousness,
extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Through John F.
Kennedy's campaign and presidency, Jackie Kennedy was known to stay above all of it by balancing
family life, first lady duties, politics, and many more (Kellerman 306). The Kennedy family had the
reputation of absolute elitist in our American society. Jackie and John F. Kennedy had married at a
younger age while he was starting off his political career. Whenever Jackie became First Lady of the
U.S. her charm of being unique, graceful, charming, and intelligence was even more attractive to the
American eye ( Kellerman 306). Openness had always been seen as one of Jackie Kennedy's

In a critique titled "Patches: Quilt and Community in Alice Walker's 'Everyday Use'" (Short Story
Criticism: Excerpts from Criticism of the Works of Short Fiction Writers, 1990), the authors reveal
that tradition and the explanation of holiness were key elements throughout the story. The writers
began the analysis by discussing the significance of a quilt; a quilt is a complete piece of artwork
that is essentially made up of fragments. These patchwork quilts, when effectively put together,
exposed a way of life. The Africans traditional way of life was one of sacredness and usefulness. By

Language Separation in Immigrant Families Essay
Language Separation in Immigrant Families
In America, each family usually has a standard language spoken in the household.
Communication is easy and mothers can talk with their children and they can connect with them.
Some people who have this benefit are unaware that some families do not have this advantage in
their homes. Lee Thomas and Linh Cao understand that some families have language change
through each generation. Cao herself lived in house where her relatives used several different
languages and learned first hand that there are many losses when a family doesn't share a common

purpose of the article is to demonstrate that even families can be separated by language.
To show this point the author's write about Cao's experiences with a language struggle between

Besides using narration she always uses a little cause and effect by sharing the results of having

languages Vietnamese, Hainanese, Mandarin, and English are used interchangeably. Looking at the
dialogues in the article made the conversation seem broken because there were four languages being

Tung not wanting to eat the large amount of noodles Mom prepared for him. Then she asks about
Tung's homework and he is unable to explain it to her because they do not share a fluent language
between them. In the article this selection was described as a "routinized interactive exchange"

She turned into the most noticeable defender for the foundation of the National Cultural Center in

The Maysles Brothers, Albert And David Maysles
Perhaps the most well–known innovators of the direct cinema genre of documentary film are the
Maysles brothers, Albert and David Maysles. Together they created what became one of the most
revolutionary contributions to direct cinema, Grey Gardens. This documentary film features the
daily lives of a mother and her middle aged daughter, both named Edith Beale, who live in squalor
despite their numerous recounts of their luxurious past. Through this film, the Maysles brothers
went against the aesthetic of film which centered its efforts on telling the viewer how to feel through
the creation of ideal lighting and straightforward dialogue. Rather than planning ahead of time, they
filmed long shots of undirected footage and recorded the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

During the performances of their own selves, they choose to reveal a particular part. However, they
inevitably express more about themselves than they realize. Along with this, the viewer experiences
glimpses of their deeper self slipping out. Due to the spontaneity of the Beale women's
performances, the Maysles brothers allow the women to provide their own dialogue through a blend
of their own memories and imagination captured in the moment. These notions are exemplified
while Big Edie sings along to the song "Tea for Two" while replaying one of her own self recordings
from her days as a singer. From her facial expressions and how she asks her daughter to dance, the
viewer can see how Big Edie is attempting to shift some of her spotlight to her daughter, for reasons
that are up to interpretation. Although Little Edie dances throughout the film and even has her own
big musical number at the end waving the American flag, she refuses to dance in that moment.
Essentially, Little Edie is choosing not to perform and in doing so reveals more depth to that
moment. It is only through having that choice that the viewer is able to appreciate it. Since the
Maysles chose to include their technology, the film becomes the story of the Beale women during a
time which they were filmed. Ultimately, this directly allows for the viewer to come to their own
conclusion about the performance (or non–performance) itself as well as the social actors as

ideology that affects the roles women and men take on in the household. In The Second Shift by
Arlie Russell, she states three different ideologies of gender. There is the traditional, transitional and
egalitarian ideology that determines what sphere men and women want to identify with, home
sphere or work sphere. However, it depends what kind on the time period and society you live in
that determines the "norm" gender ideology, which affects the division of labor in a household. The
society, which affected the Mendoza and Ortega family that I have observed and interviewed, ...

Women are working more and identify their womanhood with the paid work as men do. Hochschild
has claimed that in 1950, 30% of women were in the labor force, but in 2002, 60%, of women were
working outside the home in the labor force. Women are working more outside from the house was
one change, but another significant transformation that occurred in the family devotion scheme was
that women have fewer children then they use to. During the 1800's women had eight children, but
in 1988 the average less than two children. Having less children and working outside the house
affected the house devotion scheme. With the shift from working at home (private farms) to working
in the labor force, now men and women are working outside the home creating dilemmas with the
second shift (housework). Today, it's 63% of all marriage with children is of two–job marriage.
Some mothers work fulltime, but others work part–time due to the family devotion scheme.
With mothers working either fulltime and part–time, there has been "mommy wars", coined by Nina
Darnton in 1990. This dilemma, the mommy wars, constitutes of two socially constructed cultural
images on how mothers should behave. One of the socially contracted images of mothers is the
traditional mother or stay–at–home mom. On the other hand, there is a portrait of the "supermom" or
the working mother. This

The Most Important Event in My Life Essay example
The Most Important Event in my Life
The most important event in my life, didn't even happen to myself, but happened to my older sister,
Becky. The reason I am writing about her is because the things that have happened to her and the
things she has done in the past have affected me tremendously as well as my family. Her life used to
be filled with nothing else but drugs, stealing, and lying. My family has never been the same since
then.
It all started out when my very shy, self–conscious sister didn't really fit in well. She was 16, chubby
and had very few friends. One day Becky's best friend Debbie introduced her to 19 year old guy
name John. Becky and John hit it off very well ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this time, my mother found that her diamond earrings were missing. She then
subconsciously had a feeling that Becky knew where they were. My mother asked Becky about it
and Becky just said she didn't know anything about it, but that wasn't the true story at all. By that
time I was in Nebraska visiting my favorite aunt. A week went by and I had missed Mother's day
that year since our flight was canceled, so we stayed an extra day. The next day I finally get home,
not to find a warm home with my family greeting me at the door, but instead to find my parents and
my sister with a couple of suitcases in their hands walking to the car. I proceed to ask my mother
what was wrong with my sister and she replied with "Yesterday Becky confessed that for the past
year, she has been doing heroin." My heart sank. I never thought it was that serious. My parents took
her to rehab, and I went into my room and cried the rest of the day.
My parents came back, surprisingly still with my sister. They said that the rehab wouldn't take my
sister because she was 18 and a legal adult and could easily sign herself out whenever she wanted.
The rehab told my parents that Becky would have to face her withdrawals at home. Now I never
knew how people acted when they went through withdrawals, but I do know now that it has to be
the most painful and frightening sight I have ever seen. Becky had to stay in my parents

The Kennedy Wives

  • 1. The Kennedy Wives The Kennedy Wives I. Introduction A. Introduce the topic in general. The lives of Rose, Ethel, Jackie, Joan and Vicki are described from their childhood to meeting their husbands, to the achievements accomplished in their lives. Amber Hunt is an award winning journalist who writes for the Enquirer of Cincinnati handling investigations. She was in the Knight–Wallace fellowship program for journalists at the University of Michigan. Along with this co–written book with David Batcher, she has written three true–crime books that include Dead but Not Forgotten, All–American Murder, and See How Much You Love Me. I really only knew about John F. Kennedy and Jackie as well as some information about Robert Kennedy, but not really his wife. Really, the only name recognized was Jackie, but I was intrigued by the fact that it contained a biography of five women, four of which I barely knew anything of. I learned about the many sexual escapades that several of the brothers had and how their wives chose to look the other way and still supported them. Most of the information was new to me. For someone who has not read much into the lives of the Kennedys, this book is an adequate introduction. It gives just enough information for any young adult or older that is curious and looking into the lives of the Kennedys. A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day Essay A Happier Tomorrow in Today Will Be a Quiet Day In the story "Today Will Be a Quiet Day" written by Amy Hempel, one may be inclined to believe that there is a tone of depression or sadness among the father and the two children. This is shown in the opening sentence, while the three are stalled in traffic on the Golden Gate Bridge. The boy states, "I think if the quake hit now the bridge would collapse and the ramps would be left" (Hempel 1202). We also learn that the boy had a best friend who committed suicide about a year before. Finally, the fact that a mother is not mentioned leaves the reader with a suspicion that the parents may be divorced, separated, or even worse, the mother may be deceased. Even though these incidents ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is shown throughout the car ride when the boy and girl are telling jokes, and the boy constantly recites humorous bumper stickers. Another example of the father's attempt to have fun with his children is his initial plan to attend the arm wrestling tournament. This is shot down by the children, but they still find an interesting place to have a nice lunch. The day proved to be a fun and relaxing day for the family, and hinted that less disastrous times are in store for them. Next, the fact that the daughter has just received her driver's license is a step towards happier times. Driving on her own is probably one of the most exciting times of her life, and she makes it known to her family that she received the highest grade in the class. The father trusts her and lets her drive all the way home, which raises her confidence and shows the trusting relationship between the father and daughter. Another example which shows happier times coming to the family is when the father tells the children that he has both good and bad news. He goes on to ask which would the children prefer to hear first. The daughter immediately answers that she wishes to hear the bad first. This is surprising to her father, but it shows that she is beginning to mature. The father is glad to hear that the daughter can handle the bad news, when earlier the truth had to be hidden from her, like the death of the dog. This shows how naive the daughter was in her younger years, and now that she has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. Dreams of Trespass: Defining the Frontier Essay Dreams of Trespass: Defining the Frontier In Fatima Mernissi's widely acclaimed book Dreams of Trespass, the storyline weaves around the tale of a young girls' life in a traditional Moroccan harem that is as much enchanting as it is disparaging. As we follow the young girl from day to day and experience all the little trivialities of her life, we notice that she is quite a precocious little child. She is constantly questioning, in fact, her mother and aunts constantly tell her that she should stop asking questions all the time. At first glance, it seems as if her questions are of little or no importance and that they are merely things any young child would ask as they are stepping out into the real world. But upon closer examination, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most obvious frontier for Mernissi is that of the harem, this is the same for most of the women in the novel too: Our house gate was a definite hudud, or frontier, because you needed permission to step in or out. Every move had to be justified and even getting to the gate was a procedure (Mernissi, 21). She slowly realizes that while she is off having fun with her cousins and Samir, the women of the harem are slowly choking in the stale air. Mernissi's mother is probably one of the most powerful women in the novel, who is constantly standing up to her father. One example of a way in which the harem is a restrictive frontier and thorn in Mernissi's mother's side is the fact that all these families have to live together, all struggling to gain their own individuality while constantly being suffocated by one another: Mother dreamed of living alone with Father and us kids. "Whoever heard of ten birds living together squashed into a single nest?" she would say. "It is not natural to live in a large group, unless your objective is to make people feel miserable." (Mernissi, 77). Another aspect of how the harem dictates how one lives is the eating ritual that exist within the walls: For one of the problems in the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

When they started dating regularly they sometimes met there for a game of bridge, Checkers, or Monopoly.      Jack telephoned Jackie in London one day and proposed marriage. The engagement was announced in June 24, 1953 and the wedding was set for September 12, 1953. (Davis 316) Joe Kennedy made sure that the wedding was well publicized as the "Wedding of the Year." Christmas, 2009 Essay Since I was a child I have always been very excited and waiting patiently for Christmas to arrive because I always thought on Christmas as an occasion when the family gets together. And this past year (2009) was not different from the others; I was very excited waiting for Christmas. Especially, because I was going to spend this holiday in Mexico with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins, but all that emotion did not take me to a Christmas full of joy as the past years. Christmas was very important to me because it was Camila's (my daughter) first time in Mexico, but after this holiday, the way I appreciated and treated my family changed. After Christmas 2009, I learned to value my mom and dad; I also learned to understand how important ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When I saw my brothers and mom boarding the plane, it felt to me as if a piece of my heart was leaving with them, in the same plane. However, in the midst of this feeling, there was also some comprehension because I knew that there was no other option to prevent this separation. I saw the three of them walking heading to the plane with destination to Colorado; far, very far away from me and the rest of my family. During their walk to the plane, each one of those steps they gave were like laughs of joy that were leaving out with the rhythm of their steps. So, step after step were just as less and less joy, until I could not see my mom and brothers anymore and that was when I let my sadness came out accompanied with tears. That moment completely changed the emotion with which I expected Christmas. It was as if the girl who waited impatiently for Christmas had disappeared along with the laughter of joy that disappeared following the rhythm of the footsteps of my mom and brothers walking to board the plane. Christmas evening! Another lesson that this holiday taught me was to value more my mom and my dad because it was so hard to feel how life is without my parents. I say this because in Christmas day I decided to stay with my grandma, aunts, uncles and cousins from my mom's side, but my dad told me that he was going to spend this holiday with his mom and the rest of his family. From our hiding place in the brush along the shoulder of the dirt path through the Khyber Pass, I could see tanks stretching to infinity and, try as I might, I could not find an end to the convoy of trucks. Huddled along with my father, mother, and infant brother and sister, we peered anxiously as the Russian Spetsnaz scouts rolled past us in jeeps ahead of the convoy heading toward the Afghanistan–Pakistan border–the very place our destination lay. My brother began to whimper. My mother began to pray. It seemed as if the line of tanks would never end. Finally, as the last of them rolled ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He straightened himself and brushed a tear aside with the back of his hand. I was puzzled. We walked on. As dawn approached with a faint hint of turquoise along the horizon in front of us and we finally sighted Peshawar–the border village in Pakistan–in the distance, my thoughts were not of the next step in our journey, but of the steps already behind us. I knew nothing of war, politics, or Communism. All I could grasp was that I was leaving the only home I had known for the first three and a half years of my life for an unknown, an abstraction, a void that held neither the warmth nor the familiarity of my home in the suburbs outside Kabul. Behind me, just beyond the bend in the road and miles away, were my friends, my teachers, and the only feeling of security I had ever known. Ahead of me lay the worst kind of fear–fear of the unknown. All I knew was that we were traveling to a place called America. After an 18–month waiting period in Pakistan, we were permitted to enter the United States and on March 21, 1983, a plane carrying my mother, father, brother, sister, and myself landed at Los Angeles International Airport, completing our long journey. The only reason that Cinderella still puts up with their orders is an example of the Behavioral perspective. The Behavioral Perspective puts emphasis on learning by experience with rewards and punishments. She knows that if she does not do the chores, she will be punished or thrown out of the household. She could choose not to help them, or just to leave, but she knows that she won't have anything left, and they need her. Her effervescent kind–heartedness that prevails through her hardships is an example of the humanistic perspective. The humanistic perspective views behavior as controlled by the decisions that people make about their lives based on their perceptions of the world. It's a view in which personality is seen as developing through an actualizing tendency which unfolds in accordance with each person's unique perceptions of the world. There are some small parts in the movie that infer what Cinderella wants through her dreams. That special family contains a soldier, a few senators, and even a president, the famous John Franklin Kennedy. The 5 trait model began from the research of D. W. Fiske and was expanded even more by other researchers as well. This Big–Five trait model is important due to the fact that it gives human path and logic of what makes up a person's character trait, personality, and much more. The answer to finding what makes an ethical leader is the fact that most of them contain all of the Big– Five traits. Many studies and different analyses have studied and research why an ethical leader needs the Big–Five traits and why it is effective through leadership (Kalshoven, Hartog, Hoogh 350). One person that was known as an ethical leader and exemplified openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism is Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Through John F. Kennedy's campaign and presidency, Jackie Kennedy was known to stay above all of it by balancing family life, first lady duties, politics, and many more (Kellerman 306). Analysis of Patches: Quilt and Community in Alice Walker's Everyday Use In a critique titled "Patches: Quilt and Community in Alice Walker's 'Everyday Use'" (Short Story Criticism: Excerpts from Criticism of the Works of Short Fiction Writers, 1990), the authors reveal that tradition and the explanation of holiness were key elements throughout the story. The writers began the analysis by discussing the significance of a quilt; a quilt is a complete piece of artwork that is essentially made up of fragments. During the performances of their own selves, they choose to reveal a particular part. However, they inevitably express more about themselves than they realize. Along with this, the viewer experiences glimpses of their deeper self slipping out. Due to the spontaneity of the Beale women's performances, the Maysles brothers allow the women to provide their own dialogue through a blend of their own memories and imagination captured in the moment. These notions are exemplified while Big Edie sings along to the song "Tea for Two" while replaying one of her own self recordings from her days as a singer. From her facial expressions and how she asks her daughter to dance, the viewer can see how Big Edie is attempting to shift some of her spotlight to her daughter, for reasons that are up to interpretation. Although Little Edie dances throughout the film and even has her own big musical number at the end waving the American flag, she refuses to dance in that moment. Essentially, Little Edie is choosing not to perform and in doing so reveals more depth to that moment. It is only through having that choice that the viewer is able to appreciate it. Women are working more outside from the house was one change, but another significant transformation that occurred in the family devotion scheme was that women have fewer children then they use to. The Most Important Event in My Life Essay example The Most Important Event in my Life The most important event in my life, didn't even happen to myself, but happened to my older sister, Becky. The reason I am writing about her is because the things that have happened to her and the things she has done in the past have affected me tremendously as well as my family. Her life used to be filled with nothing else but drugs, stealing, and lying. My family has never been the same since then. It all started out when my very shy, self–conscious sister didn't really fit in well. She was 16, chubby and had very few friends. I never thought it was that serious. My parents took her to rehab, and I went into my room and cried the rest of the day. My parents came back, surprisingly still with my sister. They said that the rehab wouldn't take my sister because she was 18 and a legal adult and could easily sign herself out whenever she wanted. The rehab told my parents that Becky would have to face her withdrawals at home. Now I never knew how people acted when they went through withdrawals, but I do know now that it has to be the most painful and frightening sight I have ever seen. Becky had to stay in my parents ...
