School Enrico Fermi – Montesarchio – Italy
The Italian school system is divided in:
 Nursery school (from six months to three years)
 Pre-school (from three years to five years old)
 Primary school (from six years to eleven years old)
 Junior high school (from eleven years old to fourteen)
 High school/secondary school (from fourteen to nineteen)
The secondary school lasts five years, even though some
professional school offer a professional certificate after three years.
Any type of high school that lasts five years grants access to the
final exam called Esame di Stato, it takes place every year between
June and July.
It is designed to give students the skills to progress to any university
or higher education institution.
Programmes are generally decided at national level,
most secondary schools provide some common
structures and subjects.
Education in Italy is compulsory from six to nineteen
years old, teachers have to evaluate through periodic
and systematic checks on knowledge, skills, competence
of the students.
Italy and all the countries use a range of techniques for the
evaluation and assessment of the students that are seen not as ends
in themselves, but as important tools for achieving improved
students outcomes.
A number of strategies and assessment could help teachers to
evaluate the students. The curriculum covers the objectives
identified in standards, and students assessment focus on the
attainment of standards.
The core logic of standards-based system rests upon the alinement of these key
elements.
If the assessments do not well match the curriculum and the standards, then the
results have little value in judging how well students are learning.
A summative assessment provide a summary statement of students achievement
at a particular point in time, it is conceived to measure the outcomes of
learning, the approach to summative assessment can have a strong impact on
the learning process itself.
The teachers through tests, project-work, problem solving skills, oral work
evaluate their students’ progress towards the full range of goals set out in
standards and curriculum overtime and in a variety of contexts.
In our school Liceo Scientifico E. Fermi in Montesarchio
the students have a periodic and a systematic checks in
the school year: three terms and five terms.
Their assessment is expressed through numbers from 0
to 10, their marks for every subjects are written in the
“pagella” and sent the students’ parents through internet
because we work through electronic register.
INVALSI tests (National Evaluation Service) are a periodic and
systematic checks on the knowledge and skills of students and on
the overall quality of training provided by educational institutions.
The tests were introduced in second classes of high schools since
2011 (even though they were already present in primary and
secondary level).
Every year second high school classes answer the tests in only one
day: the topics are about Maths, Italian and Sciences.
INVALSI is a reserch institute accountable to Ministry of
Education, Universities and Research (MIUR).
Every three years the Minister establishes the strategic
priorities which the Institute must bear in mind when
programming its own activities.

Italy and all the countries use a range of techniques for the evaluation and assessment of the students that are seen not as ends in themselves, but as important tools for achieving improved students outcomes. A number of strategies and assessment could help teachers to evaluate the students. The curriculum covers the objectives identified in standards, and students assessment focus on the attainment of standards.
  • 6. The core logic of standards-based system rests upon the alinement of these key elements. If the assessments do not well match the curriculum and the standards, then the results have little value in judging how well students are learning. A summative assessment provide a summary statement of students achievement at a particular point in time, it is conceived to measure the outcomes of learning, the approach to summative assessment can have a strong impact on the learning process itself. The teachers through tests, project-work, problem solving skills, oral work evaluate their students’ progress towards the full range of goals set out in standards and curriculum overtime and in a variety of contexts.
  • 7. In our school Liceo Scientifico E. Fermi in Montesarchio the students have a periodic and a systematic checks in the school year: three terms and five terms. Their assessment is expressed through numbers from 0 to 10, their marks for every subjects are written in the “pagella” and sent the students’ parents through internet because we work through electronic register.
  • 8. INVALSI tests (National Evaluation Service) are a periodic and systematic checks on the knowledge and skills of students and on the overall quality of training provided by educational institutions. The tests were introduced in second classes of high schools since 2011 (even though they were already present in primary and secondary level). Every year second high school classes answer the tests in only one day: the topics are about Maths, Italian and Sciences.
  • 9. INVALSI is a reserch institute accountable to Ministry of Education, Universities and Research (MIUR). Every three years the Minister establishes the strategic priorities which the Institute must bear in mind when programming its own activities.
