Current Italian High School
System
 Lasts 5 years
 Six types of high school majors (artistic, classic,
linguistic, scientific, humanistic, musical)
 Two types of technical institutes divided into eleven
majors
 Two types of professional institutes divided into six
majors
 Last year exam for diploma: "Maturità", an oral and
written exam
Positive Outcomes
 Equity of access
 Broad general culture
 Interdisciplinary links, though generally limited to
humanistic subjects
 Commitment and many hours of study
 Very good preparation on the theoretical foundations of
the study subjects
 Long-lasting friendship ties
 Spaces of participation and citizenship
Negative Outcomes
 Minimum effort by professors to help students
 Excessive study content, highly based on the
past
 No choice or possibility of self-improvement
 It causes low responsibility towards learning
 Low emphasis on sport and exercising
 Too theoretical
 Monotonous and passive teaching methods
 It is punitive and does not reward the students
• Old, dirty, and poorly equipped
facilities/buildings
• High rate of students that fail one
or more years
• It focuses on study programs and
not students
• No international approach
• Close-minded
• Low use of technology and
interactive tools and materials
My Solution: Introduce a
new System
 Create a new high school approach that motivates and involves
students on a higher level by studying, interacting and
understanding in an innovative way
 More interactive and helpful towards the students’ future,
helping them maintain an open mind
 Useful courses based on the student’s interests
 Inclusion of an International mindset (studying abroad/
preparation for college choices)
 Introduction to the working environment and different career
fields
 Courses that help with life's practical chores (paying taxes,
handling issues, cooking etc.)
Classes / Courses
 Basic Italian approach on general studies, such as
history, math, literature, science etc.
 Improved language learning
 Interactive classes with technology (smartboards,
internet, tablets)
 After school activities + sports
 Work related visits and hands-on experiences (field
trips)
 A choice of extracurricular useful classes
Improved Language

 Spoken Exercises
 Debates regarding current news and issues
 Perfectioning both the language and the
pronunctiation
 Inclusion of foreign experiences offered by the
school itself
 Movies and documentaries shown in original
language
Help on deciding students’

 Summer Internships
 College Counselor
 Organization of College/University/Career meetings
for students to start thinking about their future
Connecting Students with
the Work Environment
 Visits to actual working places, including: factories,
industries, offices, airports, ect.
 Classes once a week explaining how jobs function, in
order for the students to be prepared during the
visits
 Introduction to the types of tasks and dutys to deal
with
 Projects and presentations regarding specifically
assigned careers to introduce to the class
Creating a Community
 After-school activities
 Group Sports
 Debate and Discussion Groups
 Assemblies to give all students the opportunity to
propose new goals for the school and share their ideas
 Organization of plays, musicals and performances
 Learning about the environment: recycling + cleaning
litter
 Raise positivity of relationships & educate to avoid racism
+ bullying
Inclusion of:
 Technology tools: advanced computer labs,
Smartboards, Ipads or other useful tablets
 Comfortable and clean study classes, outside areas,
libraries, equipped gym
 Acting classes, Speaking exercises to facilitate oral
exams/presentations + fight shyness/anxiety
Conclusion
 When I think of inventing something, I usually strive to come up with
something useful and helpful for the community and in this case, for the future
generation.
 Living in Italy, made me realize there are many things to fix in this country. One
of these is the school system, which in terms of learning is considered one of
the best systems as we are taught extensively about the history of different
countries, and we learn a base of many subjects.
 The issue here is the way things function, the facilities, the relation between
professors and students, and the non-existing attempt of informing students
on universities or study abroad programs. The list of things to fix could go on
and on.
 My vision is to either introduce or reinvent a system based on the current one,
but with a major step forward, and a greater international approach. Students
should be motivated by there professors to study hard but in a innovative way,
expressing themselves in order to discover each of their capabilities, and guide
them through what their choices will be for their future.

The Innovative Italian School

  • 1. 6. If you could invent something, what would it be and why?
  • 2. Current Italian High School System  Lasts 5 years  Six types of high school majors (artistic, classic, linguistic, scientific, humanistic, musical)  Two types of technical institutes divided into eleven majors  Two types of professional institutes divided into six majors  Last year exam for diploma: "Maturità", an oral and written exam
  • 3. Positive Outcomes  Equity of access  Broad general culture  Interdisciplinary links, though generally limited to humanistic subjects  Commitment and many hours of study  Very good preparation on the theoretical foundations of the study subjects  Long-lasting friendship ties  Spaces of participation and citizenship
  • 4. Negative Outcomes  Minimum effort by professors to help students  Excessive study content, highly based on the past  No choice or possibility of self-improvement  It causes low responsibility towards learning  Low emphasis on sport and exercising  Too theoretical  Monotonous and passive teaching methods  It is punitive and does not reward the students • Old, dirty, and poorly equipped facilities/buildings • High rate of students that fail one or more years • It focuses on study programs and not students • No international approach • Close-minded • Low use of technology and interactive tools and materials

My Solution: Introduce a new System  Create a new high school approach that motivates and involves students on a higher level by studying, interacting and understanding in an innovative way  More interactive and helpful towards the students’ future, helping them maintain an open mind  Useful courses based on the student’s interests  Inclusion of an International mindset (studying abroad/ preparation for college choices)  Introduction to the working environment and different career fields  Courses that help with life's practical chores (paying taxes, handling issues, cooking etc.)

Classes / Courses  Basic Italian approach on general studies, such as history, math, literature, science etc.  Improved language learning  Interactive classes with technology (smartboards, internet, tablets)  After school activities + sports  Work related visits and hands-on experiences (field trips)  A choice of extracurricular useful classes
  • 7. Improved Language Learning  Spoken Exercises  Debates regarding current news and issues  Perfectioning both the language and the pronunctiation  Inclusion of foreign experiences offered by the school itself  Movies and documentaries shown in original language
  • 8. Help on deciding students’ future  Information on studying abroad  Help with choosing what major to study  Summer Internships  College Counselor  Organization of College/University/Career meetings for students to start thinking about their future
  • 9. Connecting Students with the Work Environment  Visits to actual working places, including: factories, industries, offices, airports, ect.  Classes once a week explaining how jobs function, in order for the students to be prepared during the visits  Introduction to the types of tasks and dutys to deal with  Projects and presentations regarding specifically assigned careers to introduce to the class

Creating a Community  After-school activities  Group Sports  Debate and Discussion Groups  Assemblies to give all students the opportunity to propose new goals for the school and share their ideas  Organization of plays, musicals and performances  Learning about the environment: recycling + cleaning litter  Raise positivity of relationships & educate to avoid racism + bullying
  • 11. Inclusion of:  Technology tools: advanced computer labs, Smartboards, Ipads or other useful tablets  Comfortable and clean study classes, outside areas, libraries, equipped gym  Acting classes, Speaking exercises to facilitate oral exams/presentations + fight shyness/anxiety
  • 12. Conclusion  When I think of inventing something, I usually strive to come up with something useful and helpful for the community and in this case, for the future generation.  Living in Italy, made me realize there are many things to fix in this country. One of these is the school system, which in terms of learning is considered one of the best systems as we are taught extensively about the history of different countries, and we learn a base of many subjects.  The issue here is the way things function, the facilities, the relation between professors and students, and the non-existing attempt of informing students on universities or study abroad programs. The list of things to fix could go on and on.  My vision is to either introduce or reinvent a system based on the current one, but with a major step forward, and a greater international approach. Students should be motivated by there professors to study hard but in a innovative way, expressing themselves in order to discover each of their capabilities, and guide them through what their choices will be for their future.
