GDG Cloud Southlake #33: Boule & Rebala: Effective AppSec in SDLC using Deplo...James Anderson
Effective Application Security in Software Delivery lifecycle using Deployment Firewall and DBOM
The modern software delivery process (or the CI/CD process) includes many tools, distributed teams, open-source code, and cloud platforms. Constant focus on speed to release software to market, along with the traditional slow and manual security checks has caused gaps in continuous security as an important piece in the software supply chain. Today organizations feel more susceptible to external and internal cyber threats due to the vast attack surface in their applications supply chain and the lack of end-to-end governance and risk management.
The software team must secure its software delivery process to avoid vulnerability and security breaches. This needs to be achieved with existing tool chains and without extensive rework of the delivery processes. This talk will present strategies and techniques for providing visibility into the true risk of the existing vulnerabilities, preventing the introduction of security issues in the software, resolving vulnerabilities in production environments quickly, and capturing the deployment bill of materials (DBOM).
Speakers:
Bob Boule
Robert Boule is a technology enthusiast with PASSION for technology and making things work along with a knack for helping others understand how things work. He comes with around 20 years of solution engineering experience in application security, software continuous delivery, and SaaS platforms. He is known for his dynamic presentations in CI/CD and application security integrated in software delivery lifecycle.
Gopinath Rebala
Gopinath Rebala is the CTO of OpsMx, where he has overall responsibility for the machine learning and data processing architectures for Secure Software Delivery. Gopi also has a strong connection with our customers, leading design and architecture for strategic implementations. Gopi is a frequent speaker and well-known leader in continuous delivery and integrating security into software delivery.

4. First Spanish factory
microgrid launches
Renewable utility ACCIONA Energía and Schneider Electric have created the first
microgrid in a Spanish factory at the latter’s Puente la Reina plant. The microgrid
harnesses 852 kWp (kilowatt peak) of renewable energy produced on-site and combines
it with 80 kWh (kilowatt hour) of battery storage and five electric vehicle charging
points, creating a connected grid that can be optimized to increase efficiency and
reduce Schneider Electric’s costs and carbon footprint.
The grid is run using Schneider Electric’s own EcoStruxure Microgrid Advisor (EMA)
software and is modeled on a fully digitalized, flexible ‘energy as a service’ approach
that can be replicated at any industrial plant. ACCIONA Energía takes care of installation,
management and maintenance, ensuring costs are kept low by requiring no client
investment.

5. Johnson Electric and Cortica
launch AI quality control
Johnson Electric and Cortica have launched a joint venture aimed at creating an
autonomous inspection system for the manufacturing industry. The new startup, Lean
AI, combines Johnson Electric’s manufacturing expertise with Cortica’s AI technology to
build an AI capable of making rapid, fully autonomous decisions.
Today’s Deep Learning-Based Quality Assurance Systems require AI experts to manually
train and retrain them on thousands of sample images. In comparison, Lean AI will have
the ability to process information from unlabeled data in seconds and adapt and learn in
real-time. The open platform can use any kind of camera to capture data, uses far less
computing power, and can be applied to all defects and products, making it far more
adaptable and scalable for a host of uses across industry.
02
6. Siemens + RazorSecure
enhance cybersecurity
03
Siemens Mobility has joined with UK-based railway cyber security company
RazorSecure, in a bit to protect transportation networks.
The rail industry is becoming increasingly digitalized to increase efficiencies and
identify potential faults faster. However, with increased digitalization comes
increased vulnerability to cyberattacks. A provider of smart digital asset
management systems, Siemens Mobility is seeking new ways to monitor
irregularities in train IT systems in real time. The new solution will ultimately be
provided to rolling stock operators and fleet owners.
7. Sandvik to acquire ICAM
04
Sandvik has agreed to acquire ICAM Technologies Corporation, which builds
solutions that translate CAM data into coding to guide CNC machining
operations. The Canadian-based company’s solutions streamline customer
workflows and save on programming and machining time by combining post-
processing, machine simulation, and tool-path optimization.
The software allows users to switch from their CAM system to optimized coding
in one step and is available for free with Sandvik-owned CGTech optimization
technology. ICAM already sells its software to aerospace, defense, engineering
and automotive customers across the world.
8. Apollo Tyres and AWS
make factories smarter
Apollo Tyres plans to migrate all its IT infrastructure to Amazon Web
Services (AWS) in order to improve productivity and compliance and gain
efficiencies at its factories. The tire-maker will combine Internet of Things
technology, data analytics and machine learning to create ‘smart’ factories
powered by real-time data gathered from machines. By connecting factories
in this way, Apollo Tyres stands to gain greater efficiencies and free its teams
to innovate faster. For example, engineers can collaborate from across the
globe to develop new cloud applications and work on improving decision-
making with data. The company plans to connect its factories in India and
Europe by the end of 2021, with all mission critical enterprise applications
following in 2022.
05
9. 3M and Mobileye improve
road safety
3M and Intel-owned Mobileye are working to crowdsource infrastructure
asset data to help improve road safety. The 3M Roadway Safety Asset
Manager platform is a cloud-based solution that helps transport
organizations manage all kinds of road assets, from signs to guardrails.
Mobileye helps to automate the mapping, monitoring and maintenance of
those assets using AI and computer-vision technology, which will be used
by 3M Roadway Safety Asset Manager.
The collaboration will enable transportation managers to make data-driven
decisions, ensuring maintenance is prioritized and optimized and resources
are efficiently allocated to save time and money.
06
10. ZF and Microsoft expand
partnership
ZF Friedrichshafen and Microsoft plan to launch a new data and
integration platform, the ZF Cloud, to transform ZF’s business. The
German parts supplier will move its business, production and industrial
processes to Azure to enable more efficient manufacturing and supply
chain processes. For example, by capturing autonomous shuttle data in
the cloud, ZF will be able to gain real time information on traffic, weather
conditions and more. With regards to the supply chain, the new platform
will enable fully digitized and integrated sales and operations planning,
improved forecasting capabilities, and increased transparency. By
harnessing cloud technology across its business, the internet of things
and data analytics, ZF is set to advance its mission of providing safe,
convenient and affordable mobility solutions.

11. Obayashi’s autonomous
logistic system using AGVs
Obayashi is developing an autonomous logistics system to support the
delivery of materials at construction sites. Obayashi designed a lightweight
low-floor automated guided vehicle (AGV) in 2015 to bring new
conveniences to construction sites. For example, the AGV can fit on
construction site elevators while carrying materials, meaning operators do
not need to stop the process to help transfer the load onto elevators.
To make the system even more efficient, Obayashi worked with SRI
International to bring autonomous capabilities to the low-floor AGV so that
it can avoid obstacles and connect with other AGVs. The machine is not fully
autonomous and needs an operator to provide both a target destination and
a rough route, since construction site layouts evolve so rapidly over time.
