4. Siemens + Google
boost manufacturing AI
Siemens and Google are joining forces to scale AI for manufacturing. By
combining Google Cloud’s AI and machine learning technologies with
Siemens’ factory automation solutions, the two technology giants plan to
transform innovation in manufacturing. The new solutions will provide a
simple way for traditional companies to embrace AI and gain a single
view of all factory data. That data can be used by AI algorithms to
optimize production processes and improve shop-floor productivity.
"Many manufacturers are still trapped in AI 'pilot projects' today;
we want to change that," said Axel Lorenz, Vice President of Control at
Siemens Digital Industries Factory Automation. "The combination of
Google Cloud's IA/ML technology with Siemens solutions for Industrial
Edge and industrial operation will be a game changer for the
manufacturing industry."

5. Johnson Controls
designs digital twins for
buildings on Azure
Johnson Controls is building digital twins for building management using
Microsoft Azure. OpenBlue Digital Twin is a platform that recreates
traditional objects and machines within a building in digital form, to be
manipulated by building designers and managers or construction
companies. By combining machine learning, AI and edge computing
technologies, OpenBlue can be used to analyze building data and digital
twin simulations to predict patterns and trends.

Mitsubishi launches
optimaX platform for
urban infrastructure
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering (MHIENG) has developed
a digital service platform designed to support urban infrastructure. The
platform can be used to oversee all MHIENG digital services, covering
everything from CO2 recovery facilities to urban transportation and
industrial plants. It can be used to predict and therefore prevent
maintenance issues through remote monitoring, optimize resources
and operational and maintenance costs, and improve safety and
cyber security. MHIENG will work closely with Mitsubishi Heavy
Industries and other companies to focus on solutions that will help
bring about a carbon neutral society, electrification, intelligent mobility
and other futureproofing, sustainable technologies.

CNH Industrial and
Bennamann generate
clean energy for farms
CNH Industrial N.V. is now Bennamann’s exclusive agricultural
technology partner, having acquired a minority stake in the UK
company. Bennamann, founded to tap into the potential of
biomethane, helps farmers combine on-site renewable energy with
animal waste to minimize emissions and costs. The approach could
mean farmers get all the energy they need directly from their own
land, reducing operational costs and freeing them from reliance on
fossil fuels. Bennamann also helps farmers generate additional
revenue from the production of biofuels derived from animal waste.
The approach not only leads to a more sustainable use of farmland
but is designed to be accessible to smaller businesses. In addition to
supporting Bennamann’s work, CNH Industrial is working with the
company to generate cleaner fuels for agricultural machinery.

Mobileye tech boosts
Udelv’s last mile
delivery vehicles
Mobileye’s self-driving system will now be used by last-mile delivery
company Udelv’s autonomous vehicles, “Transporters”. The two
companies have signed a deal to produce more than 35,000
Transporters, powered by Mobileye technology, by 2028, with
commercial operations starting in 2023. Commercial fleet
management company Donlen has already placed a pre-order for
1,000 Transporters. Mobileye’s sensors, software and proprietary
mapping solution will combine with Udelv’s technology, which
enables its vehicle to maneuver parking lots, loading zones and
private roads. More companies are looking to last-mile solutions
given the spike in online shopping in the past year. Urban last-mile
delivery volume is expected to rise by up to 80% by 2030.
“The readiness of Mobileye Drive, along with its vast map coverage
of North America, Europe and Asia, will allow us to ramp up the
production and deployment of Udelv Transporters and rapidly offer
the service at scale to our expanding list of customers, ”said Udelv
CEO and co-founder Daniel Laury.

Veoneer to develop
personalized car safety
solutions
Veoneer, emotion3D, and AVL are developing a personalized and
situation-aware restraint control technology system for vehicles. In
contrast to passive airbags and seatbelts, the Smart-RCS (restraint
control system) project aims to create new solutions that fit
everybody, providing one level of safety for all. The news follows a
University of Virginia study that found women are 72% more likely
to suffer injuries than men while wearing a seatbelt. The project,
supported by the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 Fast Track
to Innovation funding program, will develop a restraint system in the
next two years using 3D sensor technology to adjust to an
individual’s position, weight and gender.

10. Continental + AWS
launch automotive
software in the cloud
Continental and Amazon Web Services (AWS) are developing a
modular hardware and software platform that connects vehicles to the
cloud to accelerate the development of autonomous driving systems.
Continental Automotive Edge (CAEdge) provides different options for
developing, delivering, and maintaining system functions from its
virtual workbench. Drivers can also continuously update the system by
downloading the latest software updates. The technology can analyze
vast amounts of car data, importing camera and radar data from
vehicle fleets to enhance automated driving simulations. Powered by
AWS, this work takes just hours, rather than weeks. CAEdge
customers will be able to access AWS data centers and
the security afforded by the AWS network.

11. Bouygues and Dassault
use digital twin tech for
construction
Dassault Systèmes and Bouygues Construction are renewing their
strategic partnership aimed at accelerating the digital transformation of
the construction industry. The three-year agreement will focus on the
development of cloud and mobile-enabled approaches to unifying the
industry and tackling environmental issues. Dassault’s 3DEXPERIENCE
platform will be used to co-create new product lines with developers,
architects, subcontractors, suppliers, and more, simplifying the process.
3DEXPERIENCE uses digital twin technology to industrialize project
management and help designers imagine how a building will be used,
and exactly what needs to go into the construction process to optimize
the end result. Planning and deployment can then be targeted and
tailored precisely in the real world, saving time and resources.
