IBM is investing $3 billion over the next four years to help clients and ecosystem partners build IoT solutions. They are providing an open cloud platform for industries, IoT services within their Bluemix platform, and expanding their ecosystem of IoT partners. IBM's cloud offerings include infrastructure as a service, platform as a service, and an IoT foundation service within Bluemix to connect, collect, manage, and analyze IoT data.
Cloud computing has clearly become a driving force in the information technology world. Over 90% of global enterprises report using cloud as part of their business. With over $33 billion in projected 2015 spend, cloud is now the largest category in IT infrastructure budgets.
But every industry has its unique technology dynamics. Therefore, to understand the future of cloud computing you need to understand its dynamics in key industries.
In this report, we will first present some brief observations on the role of cloud across these verticals. The focus will be on the pace of cloud adoption and its subsequent impact on key sectors within each industry.
In addition, our research showed that manufacturing plays a special role in global development—and so the report will take a deeper dive into that unique sector. In doing so, the report will highlight digital trends that have a broader impact as cloud moves from the digital to the “cyber-physical”.
Impact of the Internet of Things on ManufacturersPTC
We live in a smart, connected world. As products have evolved, their capabilities have multiplied, creating new forms of value and even doing things well beyond their primary function. The impact is a fundamental transformation of how manufacturers create and exchange value with customers. Those who don’t participate place their current competitive advantage at risk.

In other words, it brings and gathers information and data nearer to the device, so that latency issues could be solved.
The Internet of Things: Are Organizations Ready For A Multi-Trillion Dollar P...Capgemini
The Internet is expanding. And this is not just in terms of getting accessible to more people; it is expanding beyond humans. Machines are becoming connected. Machines are talking to humans, but increasingly, they are also talking to one another. And this interconnectedness of machines, or the Internet of Things (IoT), is a potential multi-trillion dollar market that organizations can now tap into.
However, do organizations realize the scale of the opportunity? Capgemini Consulting conducted an extensive survey of IoT products and services of over 100 leading companies across North America and Europe. We also spoke at length with several industry executives at companies developing IoT solutions to understand the challenges companies face. This article presents the results of the survey and highlights the key hurdles companies are facing.

It’s not enough to embrace the new digital era. The
existential challenge for companies today is to become
digitally durable - to anticipate disruption and
transform processes and products to compete on
outcomes. Whether it’s understanding the profound
impact of self-driving cars on transportation or being
a part of the smart-energy revolution, simply closing
the digital gap is no longer sufficient.
Aricent’s research, detailed in Technology Vision
2016, shows that successful companies are pursuing
an R&D paradigm that allows them to compete
aggressively on outcomes.5 These companies have a
culture that anticipates disruption to create sustainable
value from Internet of Things. They are digitally
durable.
Search and Society: Reimagining Information Access for Radical FuturesBhaskar Mitra
The field of Information retrieval (IR) is currently undergoing a transformative shift, at least partly due to the emerging applications of generative AI to information access. In this talk, we will deliberate on the sociotechnical implications of generative AI for information access. We will argue that there is both a critical necessity and an exciting opportunity for the IR community to re-center our research agendas on societal needs while dismantling the artificial separation between the work on fairness, accountability, transparency, and ethics in IR and the rest of IR research. Instead of adopting a reactionary strategy of trying to mitigate potential social harms from emerging technologies, the community should aim to proactively set the research agenda for the kinds of systems we should build inspired by diverse explicitly stated sociotechnical imaginaries. The sociotechnical imaginaries that underpin the design and development of information access technologies needs to be explicitly articulated, and we need to develop theories of change in context of these diverse perspectives. Our guiding future imaginaries must be informed by other academic fields, such as democratic theory and critical theory, and should be co-developed with social science scholars, legal scholars, civil rights and social justice activists, and artists, among others.

Connector Corner: Automate dynamic content and events by pushing a buttonDianaGray10
Here is something new! In our next Connector Corner webinar, we will demonstrate how you can use a single workflow to:
Create a campaign using Mailchimp with merge tags/fields
Send an interactive Slack channel message (using buttons)
Have the message received by managers and peers along with a test email for review
But there’s more:
In a second workflow supporting the same use case, you’ll see:
Your campaign sent to target colleagues for approval
If the “Approve” button is clicked, a Jira/Zendesk ticket is created for the marketing design team
But—if the “Reject” button is pushed, colleagues will be alerted via Slack message
Join us to learn more about this new, human-in-the-loop capability, brought to you by Integration Service connectors.

Kubernetes & AI - Beauty and the Beast !?! @KCD Istanbul 2024Tobias Schneck
As AI technology is pushing into IT I was wondering myself, as an “infrastructure container kubernetes guy”, how get this fancy AI technology get managed from an infrastructure operational view? Is it possible to apply our lovely cloud native principals as well? What benefit’s both technologies could bring to each other?
Let me take this questions and provide you a short journey through existing deployment models and use cases for AI software. On practical examples, we discuss what cloud/on-premise strategy we may need for applying it to our own infrastructure to get it to work from an enterprise perspective. I want to give an overview about infrastructure requirements and technologies, what could be beneficial or limiting your AI use cases in an enterprise environment. An interactive Demo will give you some insides, what approaches I got already working for real.

Neuro-symbolic is not enough, we need neuro-*semantic*Frank van Harmelen
Neuro-symbolic (NeSy) AI is on the rise. However, simply machine learning on just any symbolic structure is not sufficient to really harvest the gains of NeSy. These will only be gained when the symbolic structures have an actual semantics. I give an operational definition of semantics as “predictable inference”.
All of this illustrated with link prediction over knowledge graphs, but the argument is general.

Real World: Testbeds Putting IOT to work

CONDITION MONITORING & PREDICTIVE MAINTENANCE TESTBED
Condition Monitoring (CM) is the use of sensors in equipment to
gather data and enable users to centrally monitor the data in real-
time. Predictive Maintenance (PM) applies analytical models and rules
against the data to proactively predict an impending issue; then deliver
recommendations to operations, maintenance and IT departments to
address the issue. These capabilities enable new ways to monitor the
operation of the equipment - such as turbines and generators - and
processes and to adopt proactive maintenance and repair procedures
rather than fixed schedule-based procedures, potentially saving money
on maintenance and repair, and saving cost and lost productivity of
downtime caused by equipment failures. Furthermore, combining sensor
data from multiple pieces of equipment and/or multiple processes can
provide deeper insight into the overall impact of faulty or sub-optimal
equipment, allowing organizations to identify and resolve problems
before they impact operations and improve the quality and efficiency of
industrial processes.
Through this testbed, the testbed leaders IBM and National
Instruments will explore the application of a variety of analytics
technologies for condition monitoring and predictive maintenance. The
testbed application will initially be deployed to a power plant facility
where performance and progress will be reported on, additional energy
equipment will be added and new models will be developed. It will then
be expanded to adjacent, as yet to be determined, industries.
