2. Purpose Of Editing
Editing at it’s best level defines the purpose of the film/advert/music video.
Editing determines four different areas of film narrative.
1: Order of receiving information of plot
2: Order of receiving information of narrative
3: Feeling relation to character/events
4: Audience experiencing the events at the speed of the character in the film
Montages often stray from these four area’s of simple editing techniques.
Montages are often made to confuse audience and make them experience the
film in a different way to normal. i.e a montage showing the scenery and
emotions of the character in mixed events, the audience will be confused as to
what the director is trying to show them.
3. Very First Film Makers
Before non-linear editing was created, the original way
of editing all films was done with film (linear or cutting
copy) by physically cutting and gluing the linear film
from the camera’s together. This created the movie.
Camera’s in the 1890’s weren’t able to pick up sound,
only picture, meaning the actors didn’t need to speak.
These films were called ‘Silent Movies’.
4. Early Experimenting With
Editing.
In New York, 1899 a film company called Edison (who
created the motion camera & projector), hired a man
named Edwin Stanton Porter. Porter was a filmmaker
who was well known for experimenting with editing.
He created edits such as dissolves & gradual
transitions. On top of creating transitions, Porter also
created some of the very first special effects such a
double exposures, miniatures & split-screens.
5. Editing Techniques
There are multiple different editing techniques that can be used in creating a film/video.
Some are:
Motivated Edit - Editing Rhythm
Montage - Cross Cutting
Parallel Editing - Seamless Edit
180 Degree Rule - Jump-Cutting
Transitions - Cutaways
Point of view shot - Cutting To Soundtrack
Shot-Reverse Shot - Splicing

Terminator 2: Chase Sequence
In 1971 the first non-linear editing system was created by CMX Systems; it was named the CMX 600. It worked by recording and playing back, black & white video recorded in ‘Skip-Field’ on disk pack drives. A disk pack drive in those times were the size of washing machines and they only stored around half an hour of data at a time.
