The income gap between aboriginal peoples and the rest of canada
This document summarizes a study that examines income data from 1996, 2001, and 2006 to measure the income gap between Aboriginal peoples and other Canadians. It finds that while the gap narrowed slightly over this period, at the current rate it would take 63 years to eliminate. Even when parity is reached, Aboriginal peoples would only achieve the same level of income inequality experienced by other Canadians. The gap persists regardless of location and despite increases in Aboriginal educational attainment, with the exception of those with a university degree. Addressing the legacy of colonialism and disparities in education levels could help close the income gap.
