This document discusses the many contributions that school libraries and librarians provide to learning. It notes that school libraries should serve as learning commons that focus on client-centered programs and advance best practices in pedagogy. School librarians help students develop digital citizenship skills, make connections between students and teachers, and provide leadership, even if misunderstood. Overall, the document argues that school libraries and librarians give students opportunities to learn and grow, and provide a crucial edge for college and career readiness.
Moving a School Library Toward a Learning CommonsSandra Gallipeau
Presentation given to St. Paul School Parent Council in February of 2014. The goal of the presentation was to introduce myself and outline my goals for the reorganization of the physical layout of the library and of the resources in the library. Contains before and after pictures of the library as well as followup of the new moveable furniture which arrived after the presentation.
This presentation highlights the transition from libraries to learning commons in the Ottawa Catholic School Board as part of our 21st Century Learning priority.

This is my final paper for Schools and Society. The purpose was to propose a change in education, and I chose to reinvent the high school library and turn it into a learning commons.
ASLA XXIII Biennial Conference - Dr Hilary Hughes - Designing a new school library offers opportunity to create innovative learning spaces for the whole school community. Drawing on recent research, this paper shares the experiences of teacher librarians/IC managers concerning the process and outcomes of school library design. Their insights provide an inspiring evidence base for future learning space initiatives.
This short presentation was delivered by Ella Mitchell & Helen Stein as part of a group discussion on the theme of enrichment activities in college and sixth form libraries/LRCs.
Pfau Long Architecture hosted a workshop at CAIS 2016 on learning commons. The workshop focused on how educators and designers are working toward a common goal of how to evolve a traditional study space for learning. The learning commons concept is becoming increasingly widespread for libraries at public and independent schools as well as colleges and universities. One of the drivers of adopting a learning commons approach is to mirror the real world by encouraging a more hands-on approach to research and problem solving.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

School libraries give . . .
• Room (virtual and real) for learning
–Today we need a learning commons, a learning
laboratory that is the foundation of all learning in the
school rather than a warehouse of information and
technologies. The new learning commons focuses on
client-centered programs pushing world-class excellence
throughout the school. Teacher-librarians in
partnerships with teacher technologists (the former tech
directors) and other learning specialists must look For
ways to capitalize on the rich resources, technologies,
spaces, and expertise available in the school library to
advance best-practice pedagogy and energize teaching
and learning for today's students and teachers.

School Libraries give . . .
• An opportunity to grow
– Our library is more libratory than
library. It is the center of our school.
It is often a little noisy. You can hear
the sounds of podcasters and video
production and storytelling and presentation.
– Library is not merely a place to get stuff. It is
a place to invent, to create, to make stuff, to
collaborate on stuff, and to share stuff. It is
more kitchen that grocery store. More
transformational than transactional.

School librarians give . . .
• Digital citizenship
– I teach kids to be solid and proud digital citizens. I teach
them to be kind bloggers and tweeters and networkers. I
help them understand their digital footprints, to build
academic digital footprints.
– When my kids build media, when they remix, they know
how to respect the intellectual property of others.
– They know about the Creative Commons movement.
They are beginning to attribute Creative Commons
licensing to their own work.
– They know the rights and the limits of Fair Use. They
know how to attribute credit, how to cite, how and when
to quote.
