1. The Faithful and the Phony
Text: Gen 13:1-15
Gen 13:1-2
1 And Abram went up out of Egypt,
he, and his wife, and all that he had,
and Lot with him,
into the south.
{not south of Egypt, but south of
where God was- Bethel}
2 And Abram was very rich in cattle,
in silver, and in gold.

2. Gen 13:5-15
5 And Lot also,
which went with Abram,
had flocks, and herds, and tents.
6 And the land was not able to bear them,
that they might dwell together:
for their substance was great,
so that they could not dwell together.
7 And there was a strife between the herdmen
of Abram's cattle
and the herdmen of Lot's cattle:
and the Canaanite and the Perizzite
dwelled then in the land.
8 And Abram said unto Lot,
Let there be no strife, I pray thee,
between me and thee,
and between my herdmen and
thy herdmen;
for we be brethren.
9 Is not the whole land before thee?

3. separate thyself, I pray thee,
from me:
if thou wilt take the left hand,
then I will go to the right;
or if thou depart to the right hand,
then I will go to the left.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes,
and beheld all the plain of Jordan,
that it was well watered every where,
before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah,
even as the garden of the LORD,
like the land of Egypt,
as thou comest unto Zoar.
11 Then Lot chose him
all the plain of Jordan;
and Lot journeyed east:
and they separated themselves
the one from the other.
12 Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan,
and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain,

4. and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
13 But the men of Sodom were wicked
and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.
14 And the LORD said unto Abram,
after that Lot was separated from him,
Lift up now thine eyes,
and look from the place where thou art
northward, and southward, and eastward, and
westward:
15 For all the land which thou seest,
to thee will I give it,
and to thy seed for ever.

her daughters, neither did she strengthen the

9. II. Discernment vs Disregard- v7, 8

Abram said…Let there be no strife…
God cannot “walk” with a child of the Devil
(John 8:40–44) who is trying to justify
himself with filthy rags (Isa. 64:6).
Isa 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all
our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and

10. we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities,
like the wind, have taken us away.
Phil 3:9
And be found in him, not having mine own
righteousness, which is of the law, but that
which is through the faith of Christ, the
righteousness which is of God by faith:

24 For all flesh is as grass, and all the
glory of man as the flower of grass. The
grass withereth, and the flower thereof
falleth away:
25 But the word of the Lord endureth for
ever. And this is the word which by the

11. But that no man is justified by the law in the
sight of God, it is evident: for, The just
shall live by faith.
And God cannot “walk” (in the sense of
“fellowship”) with a Christian (Rom. 8:10–
13) who walks after the flesh (2 Cor. 7:1)
instead of after the Spirit (Gal. 5:22).

12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not
to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
13 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die:
but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the
deeds of the body, ye shall live.

beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all
filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting
holiness in the fear of God.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,
longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Strife is evidence of evil setting a snare for a
man’s soul.

For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is
among you envying, and strife, and
divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as
men?

19 Now the works of the flesh are manifest,
which are these; Adultery, fornication,
uncleanness, lasciviousness,

emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies,

13. For where envying and strife is, there is
confusion and every evil work.

Exod 13:13
And every firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem

An ass had to be redeemed with a lamb.
Job 11:12
For vain man would be wise, though man be
born like a wild ass's colt.
