The Emotions of Captivity in Psalm 137 Essay
The book of Psalms contains some of the most beloved pieces of scripture across centuries and
cultures of this world. Psalms have been frequently cited is sermons, devotionals, movies, poetry,
and songs. Most often, Psalms are attributed to King David of the 10th century BCE. But regardless
of the authorship of the different psalms, each seem to carry a special place in describing human
relationships to God, to country, to friends, to enemies and more. As time has progressed, certain
psalms have become favorites because of their encouraging and uplifting messages, such as the
timeless Psalm 23. However, other psalms are neglected in Christian circles because of the difficulty
they present in interpretation. Often, these psalms are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For there our captors demanded of us songs, And our tormentors mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the
songs of Zion." How can we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land? If I forget you, O Jerusalem,
May my right hand forget her skill. May my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth. If I do not
remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem, above my chief joy. Remember, O Lord, against the sons
of Edom the day of Jerusalem, who said, "Raze it, raze it, to its very foundation." O daughter of
Babylon, you devastated one, how blessed will be the one who repays you with the recompense with
which you have repaid us. How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones
against the rock. (Ps 137, NASB) It is not often that theologians can agree upon the date of
authorship of a text, but Psalm 137 is an exception. It is widely accepted that this psalm was written
during or shortly after the exilic waves of the Southern Kingdom during the Babylonian captivity of
597 BCE and 587 BCE , extending to 538 BCE . While no specific author is identified as the author
of Psalm 137, it certainly is not King David due to the time elapse from King David's reign and the
Babylonian Captivity. The anguish described in the beginning of the Psalm paired with the vengeful
remarks at the end of the Psalm, in addition to the reference to Babylon while the writer's heart
longs for Zion undoubtedly make this Psalm a description of the exile written during or shortly

Corett Coretta Scott Research Paper
On April 27,1927 something astonishing happened in a small city by the name of Marion in
Alabama. On this particular Tuesday a queen was born, by the name of Coretta Scott. She was the
daughter of Obadiah and Bernice Scott who were country folk that owned their own farm. She was
also one of their three children that all grew up in what I would call racist america. Where you could
be punched, stomped or beaten for just having the skin you were born with. Also, where many
people believe if you weren't white it wasn't right. Even though she was treated unfairly she still did
what she had to do. Her parents made sure that her and her siblings got an education which required
them to travel twelve miles a day on foot. After, six years of attending a poorly elementary and four
years at a decent Lincoln high she graduated as the valedictorian. So, through her parents she knew
by any means necessary she had to fight for what was right and what she deserved. ... Show more

They both told each other that they will better the south by getting a better education in the north.
Down the road she began working with the NAACP and then transferring to the New England
Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. That is when the queen met her king, the king
being Martin Luther King Jr. , who at the time was still working towards his aspiration of being a
Dr. Soon after the queen and king were married on June 18,1953 in the backyard of the Scotts. Not
to long after her wedding she went back to Boston where she earned her bachelor's degree in voice.
After King finished his time in Boston the two moved in together and had four children. The eldest

The Book of Obadiah
This brief book of the Hebrew Bible is very significant in that it is one of only two of the Minor
Prophetic books that are addressed entirely to a nation other than Israel and Judah. The Book of
Obadiah deals with the ancient feud between Israel and the nation of Edom, between the
descendants of Jacob and those of his brother Esau. Through the prophet Obadiah, the Lord
expressed His indignation at the nation of Edom. When they should have been helping their
relatives, they were gloating over the Israelites' problems and raiding their homes. "The Book of
Obadiah brings an important message about oppressors and the oppressed, betrayers and those who
have been betrayed. Arising out of a time of national crisis, it has a word for innocent bystanders
and also survivors." A day was coming, the day of the Lord, when all these wrongs would be
righted. The Lord would bring justice to the world.
Rabbi Halpren is of the belief that this small book is worthy of theological scholarship and
hermeneutical exegesis. He says; "Obadiah is more fortunate that most prophetic books of the Bible
despite its miniscule size. It is one of the few biblical books read in the synagogue in its entirety and
its last verse is recited daily in the Jewish liturgy. It is generally neglected as an object of study
probably because of its unimpressive dimensions. Yet, it is an archetypical example of prophetic
style and content." The size of the book does not diminish its importance and worth

Book Of Hosea Essay
Scholar Paul House expresses the focal point of the Book of the Twelve portrays the attributes of
God. House brings to light that there is a threefold movement or development of the emphases. The
Book of Hosea through Micah warnings dominates the depiction of Yahweh. The Book of Nahum
through Zephaniah, judgement texts dominate. Lastly, Haggai through Malachi highlights the
restoration. A common theme among the pre–exilic prophets was proclamation and prophecy
regarding repentance of Israel and Judah, no repentance would bring forth judgment, and despite the
forthcoming judgement, there was still hope for the future and restoration. We will discuss six Minor
Prophets and their prophecies, and there correlation to the New Testament scriptures and prophecies.
The six Minor Prophets that will be discussed are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Micah, and
Habakkuk (Hays, 2010, p. 262). Hosea ministered from 782 BC – 686 BC, and was a prophet of
Israel (Bible.org, 2017). We will discuss three scriptures that connect the Old Testament scriptures
of Hosea to the New Testament scriptures. "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment
of God rather than burnt offerings" (Hosea 6:6, NIV). This correlates to Matthew 9:13, "But go and

Micah 4:5 states , "All the nations may walk in the name of their gods, but we will walk in the name
of the LORD our God for ever and ever", correlates to Acts 14:16, " In past generations, He let all
nations go their own way." We see that both of these scriptures are relevant today, so many people
are turning to other religions. Micah 7:8 states, "Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and
forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance? You do not stay angry forever but
delight to show mercy", correlates to Hebrews 8:12, "For I will forgive their iniquities, and

The Struggle In Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's A New England Nun
"A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it is in hot water." The imagery
created by Eleanor Roosevelt emphasizes the emotional strength of a woman, which may often be
overshadowed by her physical inferiority, as compared to her male counterpart. The hot water is a
representation of the hostile or conflicting situation that women encounter on a daily basis. This
would come in the form of emotional obstacles and mental tribulations, as they have to oppose
many of society's wishes before they can achieve their dreams. Although women may appear fragile,
docile, and porous to the desires of men, their course of action as they overcome their adversity
would prove their character to be strong, willful, and self–reliant. Authors Mary E. Wilkins
Freeman, in "The England Nun," and Nella Larsen, in "Sanctuary," portray protagonists that exhibit
characteristics of strong–will and independence that resist the social confinements of their time. In
both cases, the protagonists have to overcome the obstacle that is classified as an internal conflict;
therefore, their ultimate decision presents their strong mental ... Show more content on

Initially, Louisa is seemingly portrayed as a representation of all the qualities that become
stereotypes of feminine females–Louisa sews, pays close attention to her "little feminine
appurtenances," drinks tea, and does what society expects of docile females, (62–63). Thus,
Freeman leads the readers to believe that Louisa is the replica of a submissive female character. On
the contrary, when Joe Dagget is introduced, it is evident that Louisa willingly partakes in the
stereotypical roles, merely because they are her passion. For instance, she desires everything to be in
its order, as shown when she irresistibly, puts back the book that Joe Dagget misplaces,

A Summary On Jonah : The Book Of Jonah
Jonah (The Book of) Jonah is a book of the Bible written by the Johan himself approximately 785–
760 BC. (BibleGateway, n.d.) This book of the Bible has only four chapters in it and it is fixed in the
Bible after the book of Obadiah and before Nahum. In the four short chapters for this book of the
Bible Johan goes from turning his back on the Lord, going back to the Lord, the once again
questioning the Lord. The first chapter shows Jonah's defiance of the Lord. The Lord asked Jonah to
go Nineveh and announce the Lord's judgement. But Jonah turned and went the other direction away
from the Lord. (Johan 1:3) Then while on the ship getting away from Nineveh Jonah is swallowed
by a whale. In Chapter 2 Jonah was inside the whale and he starts to pray again to the Lord, telling
him that even though he is in the situation he is in, he will still turn to the Lord always. So, the Lord
commands the whale to sit Jonah out. (Jonah 2:10) The third chapter explains how Jonah is asked by
the Lord to proclaim his message of judgement on Nineveh, Jonah did as the Lord instructed. The
people off Nineveh changing their ways and the judgement was spared by the Lord. Chapter four of
Jonah explains how Jonah becomes angry with the Lord because he does not believe the Lord
should have been so gracious with the people of Nineveh. Jonah believed that they should not have
been spared. (Jonah 4:1–2). Even though this is a short book it has a major theme to it, the Lord's

Messiah: The Implications In The Hebrew Bible
Messiah Research Exercise
Messiah is defined as the promised deliverer of the Jewish nation prophesied in the Hebrew Bible.
Jesus is regarded by Christians as the Messiah of the Hebrew prophecies and the savior of mankind.
The implications in the Hebrew Bible is that the Messiah is the special servant of God; the name that
God chose for Jesus. It means the person whom God sent to save people from their sin and be their
king; the only person who can put us right with God; God promised the Jews that the Messiah would
save them and be their king; they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah when he came; Jews
are still waiting for a Messiah; the person who will come again to rule in God's kingdom for ever;
God's anointed person; Christ

Comparison Of Major And Minor Prophets
In the last section of the Bible there are two parts. The two parts are the Major and Minor Prophets.
The Major prophets are in the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The minor Prophets
are in the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah,
Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, these books form that last segment of the Old Testament cannon.
The authors of these books were the Hebrew prophets, which makes sense because a Hebrew
prophet is a spokesperson for God. The twofold aspect of the prophet's ministry included declaring
God's message for people of their day and foretelling God's actions in the future (Hindson). Thus,
the prophet was also called a "seer" because he could see future events before ... Show more content

assignment, how stress affected a primates health, and the baboons he recorded his data from.
Soloman was the alpha male and Leah was the alpha female. Devorah was the most eligible female
in the group. Ruth, a lower–ranking baboon, who had difficulty finding a mate settled down with
Joshua, another lower–ranking baboon. They soon had Obadiah. Uriah a large baboon who

areas and to the baboons. Towards the end, Sapolsky had traveled to Olemelepo to perform an
autopsy on a diseased baboon. To confirm whether it was Tuberculosis, he had another sick baboon
studied and the results came out positive for Bovine TB. Luckily, the baboon troop he was studying
was not affected but the rates were growing rapidly for the Olemelopo baboon troop. Ultimately, the
source of Bovine TB came from cattle raised by the Masai people, who refused to kill off the cows.
Sapolsky went back to the United States to study TB in baboons and when he returned to Kenya, he
arrived in time to say goodbye to his baboon troop who was affected by the outbreak. The last one
of his troop to go was, Joshua, who he sat with and fed cookies until he was gone. An overall theme
in all four parts has to do with Sapolsky's growth. He starts out with a dream of conducting research
on primates as an undergraduate student to getting his PhD to getting a professorship and finally

Comics: Chapter 2: Influence Of Comics
Chapter 2
Influence of Comics
Today people live in an increasingly visual world, where we are engaged not only by texts but also
by images. We are influenced by internet, magazines, advertisement, games, picture books, film,
anime, comic books and so many more. Those media are using images to communicate, entertain
and gain profit. It has shown an increasing usage proportion of visual or graphic representation and
less text. We are now living in images dominated world. Berger (1972: 10) explained they are
important because images or visuals can actually attach to somebody's consciousness stronger and
longer.
2.1. Comic Books History
It is striking that comic book has escalated into one of the popular cultures. They are entering into
people's everyday lives through television shows, Hollywood's films, game industries even the
internet has become one platform to spread comics. Comic book has also become one major form of
a sequential art. It kept growing into a better quality in term of paper, printing and color quality.
Comic books have been around for long time. The earliest known comic book is believed to be The
Adventures of Mr. Obadiah Oldbuck (Les Amours de Mr. Vieux Bois), created by Rudolph Töpffer
in 1837 (Fig.1 and Fig. 2). It is a forty pages book with combination ... Show more content on

aesthetic response in the viewer' (1993:9). In his talk in TED filmed in 2005, McCloud further

Why Does Jesus Use The Sign Of Jonah
First, his comments from Luke 11:29ff:
When the crowds were increasing, He began to say, 'This generation is an evil generation, it seeks
for a sign but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the
people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation...the men of Nineveh will rise up at
the judgement with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and
behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.'
We should note that Jesus does not use this occasion to condemn Jonah or praise him. The "sign of
Jonah" is not said to be his three days and nights in the fish, but rather that he preached God's word
to that generation of Ninevites as Jesus was preaching God's word to His generation. What's more,
Jesus ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By refraining from making the clear connection between Jonah and the elder son, Jesus may be yet
again be extending one more kindness to Jonah.
Now, some additional observations on Jesus' comments concerning Jonah:
Jesus is silent regarding Jonah's aberrant behavior and salvation, probably because, at this point, this
was not His purpose in citing Jonah.
The issue addressed by Jesus was the failure of His Jewish listeners to hear, repent and believe God
as the pagan Ninevites had done.
Jesus was complimenting the Ninevites, not Jonah nor His listeners.
Jesus' comparison of Himself to Jonah had to do with their common experience in their call,
preaching, suffering, death (or near death in the case of Jonah) and return to life, rather than a
comparison of the holiness of their character. It must be noted, however, that Jesus does say that He
is greater than Jonah. This, I think, says it all. Although they had some common experiences, in
reality, Jesus and Jonah were miles apart in their embrace of the Father and His loving plan for the

American Born Chinese: A Conceptual Analysis
The state of Massachusetts was the first in our nation to enforce primary education in 1852–
requiring institutions to focus on grammar along with basic mathematics. Since then, educational
policies in individual states have controlled the educational system, molding the upcoming
generations. In a study, performed by the U.S. Department of Education, a Reading Report Card was
constructed showing that 68% of fourth graders could not read at the proficient fourth grade level

However, this is incorrect according to Jacelyn Liberto from St.John Fisher College, "the use of
graphic novels and comic books can benefit students due to their multimodal format, their activation
of visual literacy, and their popularity in current adolescent culture". "These factors make them
relevant to aid in engagement issues as well as visual literacy needs" (Liberto, 7) drastically
changing the entire reading experience. In addition, there are many parents that feel graphic novels
contain explicit content which can take focus away from the literary merit of the novel. Obviously
this opinion is biased, because many times mature content makes the novel more intriguing for the
reader– as it relates better to reality. When it comes to learning, propriety should not outweigh
efficiency and "this novel is extremely appropriate considering all that is going on with immigration
around the world, and in today's society. Graphic novels are a great way to showcase these events
and prompt meaningful discussions and learning. Although there was some reluctance and
uncertainty about using graphic novels as a teaching tool in the classroom, we have reached an
agreement that they can be a pleasurable and valuable asset to student learning."

A Comparison Of The Tanach And Bible
A Comparison of the Tanach and Bible
Each religion has a sacred text which is used to understand their worldview and their religion better.
A sacred text is what a religion believes is holy and authoritative. Religious texts show its followers
what to do in worship, daily living and conduct. While Christianity and Judaism have numerous
similarities because of the mother–daughter link, differences still exist. The sacred text for Judaism
is the Tanach while for Christianity the Bible is used. This essay will explore the structure of each
sacred text, the type of literature is in each canon, authorship of the text and how it is used in daily
practice such as food, interpretation of the commandments and how a Torah is used in a synagogue.
STRUCTURE OF EACH CANON
The Bible is known as 'authoritative written source' (Bowley, 1999) and is a library of 66 books and
is made of two parts: Old Testament (39 books) and New Testament (27 books). The Bible was only
officially put together around the third century. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and
Aramaic while the New Testament was written in Greek. During the Reformation, scholars wanted
to allow everyone to read the Bible in their own languages (Beck et al, 2000). Now, the Bible is
written in over 1600 languages. However, Jewish people only read the Torah in Hebrew. The Old
Testament is similar to the Torah where the books are exactly the same.
The New Testament is made up of the gospels and letters. The word

on June 18th, 1953. She finished her schooling in Boston and then shortly afterwards returned to

Yolanda Denise King, Martin Luther King III, Dexter Scott King, and Bernice Albertine King. It
was during this time, the 1950's and 1960's, that her husband rose in popularity to lead the Civil
Rights Movement in America. In 1955 one of the first significant events took place in the changing
of rights that black people had. This event was the Montgomery Bus Boycott in which many black
people opposed the city's policy of racial segregation on its public bus system. The struggle lasted
from December 1st, 1955 to December 20th, 1956. The deciding factor was that most black people
in Montgomery agreed to follow this act and did not ride the buses. This proved highly in favor of
them as they were the majority of bus riders, soon after, the bus companies saw a drastic drop in the
revenue, which led to the United States Supreme Court to declare that these laws were
unconstitutional. Throughout that year, Coretta and her husband Martin participated in this event
and walked to many of the places in which they needed to go. This garnered huge worldwide
attention towards the injustices that existed in America and gained their cause much support in many
others countries. These actions did not come without resistance though as the many white

Analysis Of The Book ' Lamentations, Psalm 137
During this time we see that the people of Jerusalem are in exile and it seems like the people have
lost faith in the Lord as their lives come down in ruins. Only a few survived as Jeremiah said and
these few people who survived will be given a new beginning from God. God has not abandoned his
people, He sends these voices to His people to reassure them and lead them as if He is their
shepherd. And during this time there have been a lot of powerful feelings being expressed whilst
interpreting their faith. A few examples of this movement during Exile would include the Book of
Lamentations, Psalm 137, the Book of Habakkuk and finally the Book of the Prophet Obadiah. The
Book of Lamentations is considered to be five poems that were said by tradition to be composed by
the prophet Jeremiah after he knew Jerusalem would fall. The poems manage with the obliteration
of the city and the occasions nearly identified with that occasion, an unnerving knowledge that
seriously tried the faith of the individuals who put their trust in Yahweh. The poems depict some of
these terrors. Jerusalem was set under attack, and starvation drove the individuals to hopelessness.
Psalm 137 has a mixture of a soft humming melancholy and fierce patriotism of the Judeans. This
Psalm is made for Israel in her captivity. Released us over it, taking its commonplace significance.

Biblical Eras Of Creation, The Patriarchs, And The Ketuvim
Referred to as "Tanak" by Jews, the Hebrew Bible contains twenty–four books characterized by
three categories: The Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Ketuvim, which outline the history and beliefs of
the Jewish faith. The Torah, commonly known as the "Law of Moses," contains the books of
Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These five narrative books cover the
Biblical eras of creation, the patriarchs, and the exodus. In Genesis 1, God created everything from
nothing at His will in six days and proclaimed all of it "good." Humankind was created, Adam and
Eve, in God's image, and they lived in the pure garden of Eden. Sin is introduced to the world when
a serpent convinces Eve, who subsequently convinces Adam, to eat from the the tree of good and
evil, which God strictly forbade. God judged their sin, bans them from Eden, they went out in the
world, and birthed sons Cain and Abel. After Cain killed Abel out of jealousy, God again judged sin
by cursing Cain, but exemplified forgiveness in Genesis 6 through his promise to curse whoever
tried to hurt him. Generations later, descendant of Adam, Noah, is introduced, as well as his wife
Naamah and their sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. In Genesis 6, God decided to start over, but saved
Noah, his family, and animals, by telling Noah to build an ark to endure the great flood. Noah
fulfilled God's orders and built an alter to Him after the flood seceded, but his descendants prove the

The History of the Canonization of the Bible The process by which the English Bible, as it is known
to the English culture today, was compiled is an extraordinary thing to see. The Bible consists of two
parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The process by which both Testaments were
written and then canonized into one book transpired over a period of many years. Once the
canonization of the Bible officially came to an end, it was translated into English. Since then, many
versions of the modern Bible have been made. Since the individual books of the Bible became
scattered as they were written, people set forth to preserve God's Word by compiling them into one

He therefore separates the Apocrypha from the main part of the Bible, putting it in an appendix. In
AD 1546, the Council of Trent convenes and settles once and for all that the Old Testament consists
of all forty–six books ("Development of the Difficult Canon"). The New Testament was canonized
over a period of approximately four hundred years (Stotesberg). From AD 50–125, the books which
in the end constitute the New Testament were written. Simultaneously, other books, which did not
end up being included in the final canon, were produced. These books are the Epistle of Barnabas,
the Didache, I Clement, the seven letters of Ignatius of Antioch, etc. ("Development of the Difficult
Canon"). As more and more books were written, Christians realized that it was imperative that they
gather and consolidate this material before it became lost. Sometime before AD 100, ten of Paul's
letters were gathered and combined into their own canon. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and
John) were combined to form another canon soon after the canonization of Paul's letters. The
Gospels and Paul's letters became the main body of a new group of Scriptures that would soon
become the New Testament. Soon Acts, I Peter, I John, and Revelation were inserted into this body
of Scripture. Following this, the rest of the books were added to the New Testament (Barker).
In AD 140, Marcion, a heretical teacher who discarded the Old Testament as Scripture, took parts of

The Yellow Kid, By G. W. Cox
he very first modern comic book made, was known as the "Yellow Kid," and its arrival in 1897,
generated the "Platinum age" of comics. It was published by G. W. Dillingham Company, and was
part of a series that Dilingham did on American authors. This became the staple for future comic
books to come, and even coined the name "Comic Book" on the back of the cover. But even before
the "Yellow Kid", comic books had existed in what has been coined the "Victorian age", which
started in 1837 with the comic "The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck" . It was published in several
different European languages and even arrived in the United States in 1842. While several other
comics existed in the Victorian age; such as "The Brownies: Their Book", "Harper 's, Puck, Judge,
Life ", and "Truth" and were extremely popular in Sunday morning newspapers, there is very little
knowledge of the comic books from this era in history, and is still being discovered, researched and
recorded. In 1933, the Dell Publishing company started a new line of comics, the "Famous Funnies"
comic book, which began with the release of "Funnies on Parade". The "Famous Funnies" have
become widely accepted as America 's first true comic book. ("History of Comics – Platinum Age."

Research Paper On The Abrahamic Covenant
The Israelites disobeyed every command in the Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants, so God made the
Davidic covenant as a way to bring their relationship with God back. God made several promises to
David through the prophet Nathan. God promised David and Israel that the Messiah would come
from one of David's family members and would establish a kingdom that would last forever. God
told David that, "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be
established forever." This covenant is truly unconditional, just like the Abrahamic covenant was.
There are no conditions placed in order to reach fulfillment. In order for the promises to be fulfilled,
it rested entirely on God's faithfulness. It did not matter if David or Israel was obedient. There is a
distinct connection between the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants. The subsequent covenants that
God made with Israel were based off of the Abrahamic covenant. Abraham was promised several
descendants just as David was. God's intention was to use all the children to bless the world. The
promises to Abraham of descendants, blessings from God, and land were still a vital part of the Old
Testament. The promise of land was however reaffirmed in the Davidic covenant. The Davidic
covenant with the now promise of a kingdom would expand from Abraham's covenant. Not only are
the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants connected but the Mosaic and Davidic covenants are as well.

Iron Man Character Analysis Essay
Tony Stark's Character Growth in Iron Man In the beginning of Iron Man, the main protagonist,
Tony Stark, was generally a bad person. He was an extreme example of the celebrity stereotype––
flashy, arrogant, self–absorbed, and rude. Stark took personal honors, as well as relationships with
others, for granted. But that all changed when Stark was kidnapped by a terroristic rebel group.
During his time as a prisoner, Tony saw what horrors his technology could be used for, and later
escaped captivity humbled and changed. From the moment he returned, Stark's character started
growing into a caring and heroic figure. Specifically, Tony Stark emerged as a new man, actually
caring for his assistant, Pepper Pots, being concerned about what ... Show more content on

Oftentimes these extremely powerful weapons ended up in the wrong hands, like insurgents. When
Tony's convoy was attacked, a rocket lodged into the ground in front of him, bearing the inscription
of Tony's own corporation. Upon his return, having seen the horrors of his weaponry firsthand, Stark
set out to right the wrongs. At his first press conference after coming home, Tony said, "I saw young
Americans killed by the very weapons I created to defend them and protect them. And I saw that I
had become part of a system that is comfortable with zero–accountability". (Iron Man) He then
proceeded to shut down the weaponry arm of Stark Industries. These actions are the sign of a
changed man. Tony Stark went from war profiteering to whistleblowing for corrupt arms dealing.
Finally, Tony Stark's most obvious change was simply in becoming a superhero. From the start of
the movie, Stark was a rich, self–interested playboy who would be more concerned over a scratch on
the finish of his Audi R8 than the fate of the free world unless it benefitted him. Taking a completely
different direction, Tony used his Iron Man suit to pursue those who wrongfully used Stark
Industries weapons. Stark even stated, "I shouldn't be alive... unless it was for a reason. I'm not
crazy, Pepper. I just finally know what I have to do. And I know in my heart that it's right". (Iron

American Comics And Japanese Manga
I. Abstract
When mention comics, everyone can think of America comics and Japanese manga. They are two
big parts of world comics and represent western and eastern comics. So they will have some
differences in style, content and development. America comics is mainly about superheroes and
reflects individualistic heroism. Japanese manga has many genres.
II. Introduction
Comics is a kind of medium that uses drawing and writing to tell a story. Cartooning is the most
common mean in comics. Comics can be divided into two kinds. One is English–language comics,
another is Japanese manga. America comics is the representation of English–language comics. As
we all know, many America comic books are adapted to movies, such as Superman, Batman, and ...

kind of works. Highly developed Japanese manga has already become a big school that has its own
particular style on the world comics.
V. The comparison of America comics and Japanese manga.
America comics and Japanese manga are two important and big comic schools. Although they have
some similar aspects, they have more differences because of different background. Then, I will
compare these two kinds of comics in three aspects.
A. Styles and content
The first is drawing style. America comics is almost about superheroes, these characters are drawn
hasty and careless. And it is colorful. Japanese manga's pictures are delicate, and its characters are
beautiful.
The second is content. America comics is just about superheroes, and it mainly express
individualistic heroism. Its stories are more close to reality, and its content is almost about fighting.
Japanese manga's themes are abundant. "It includes works in a broad range of
genres: action–adventure, romance, sports and games, historical drama, comedy, science among
others."[3]Every aspect of live can be drawn to manga. Japanese manga is more flexible than
America comics.
B. Development
"American historians generally divide comics chronologically into «ages». The first period, called
«Golden Age», extends from 1938 (first appearance of Superman) to 1954

How Does Sue Monk Kidd Use Symbols In The Secret Life Of Bees

the Boatwrights. Even Lily realized that they were similar to her when she said, "I loved the idea of
bees having a secret life, just like the one I was living" (Kidd 148). In this quote, August was

Elijah The Prophet By Elijah
Elijah the Prophet
I have decided to write my Old Testament essay on the mysterious prophet Elijah. According to the
bible, in the book of Kings, Elijah was not only a devoted prophet of God, but he also served as a
worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel, under King Ahab's reign. Elijah is remembered
for his remarkable faith and devotion to God. In writing this essay, I will tell the story of one the
many adventures that occurred in Elijah 's lifetime. Of course, there are so many alterations and
rewritten versions of the bible, that I have no idea what to believe. No one truly knows what
happened, for everyone who could have, died long ago. Either way, all the different versions of the
story seem to have the same basic outcome. In telling you this, I will try to incorporate the
information that is mentioned throughout the book, "The Old Testament Story, Ninth Edition" (by
John H. Tullock and Mark McEntire) and some of what I have been taught myself over my twenty–
eight years of life.
It all began when King Ahab, and his deceitful wife Jezebel demanded for their kingdom to worship
the false God of Baal. As a result, they ordered all the prophets of the Lord to be put to death. Elijah
was the only one to survive this horrible purge and went to confront King Ahab. He told the King
that a three–year drought would be brought upon Israel. This was to challenge the people's false
prophet, Baal and eventually teach them a very valuable lesson in whose God was real.

Understanding The Biblical Worldview Of The Bible Of Two...
Understanding The Biblical Worldview
"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverb
14:12.) In order to fully comprehend this proverb, one must go back to the beginning of the Bible.
There is a story in the Bible of two brothers, Jacob and Esau. This story begins in the book of
Genesis with a man named Isaac, praying to the Lord on behalf of his barren wife Rebekah. The
Lord answered Isaac's prayer and Rebekah conceived. The Bible states that the children struggled
together within her, therefore, she went to inquire of the Lord for an explanation. The Lord told
Rebekah that she would give birth to two boys who will represent two nations; one shall be stronger
than the other and that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Henderson states that a worldview is "a commitment to a basic view about reality;" furthermore, he
states that a worldview "determines the shape of someone's emotions, one's wisdom, one's desires,
and one's will." (Henderson, "What is a Worldview?") These definitions clearly describes Esau's
scenario. Esau had a basic view about reality. He believed in himself and his cunning ability as a
hunter. In a moment of sudden urge, his emotions and desires bonded together to lust after his
fleshly craving, which led him to despise his birthright. The Bible also states that Esau went his own
way. Consequently, Esau's worldview caused him to live by his own rules and to take his own
pathway in life. This illustration is also a representation of most people in today's society and in time
past, they do what ever they feel is right, which is also the reason for most "isms" and "schisms"
such as materialism, hedonism, relativism, communism, atheism, just to name a few. The Bible calls
the end of these ways, "... the ways of death" (Proverb 14:12). Most importantly, God is absent from
this viewpoint.
Unlike the Worldview, the Biblical worldview is Christ–centered. Dr. Henderson defines this view
as being, " centered on Jesus Christ, the ultimate Revelation of God, and as the God–man who
accomplished our reconciliation to God through his life, death, and resurrection from the dead"
(Henderson, "What is the Christian Worldview?") Jacob represents this viewpoint. Initially, Jacob

Foreshadowing In The Old Testament
The Christian perspective of the Old Testament as the foreshadowing and foundation of the Jesus
Event goes as followed: The Old Testament, also known as the Hebrew Scriptures, or the Old
Covenant, contains myth, history, faith, and culture of the Israelites. The Israelites are descendants
of Abraham and Sarah, then the descendants of Jacob which become the 12 tribes of Israel, then the
only tribe left after the Assyrians wiped them out was the tribe of Judah, hence the name: Jews. As
Christians, we believe that the Old Testament is one story made up of many stories. We also believe
that all the sections of it, the Torah ( also know as the Pentitute), historical books, wisdom books,

The Old Testament was written by around 40 different men over a time period of approximately
1600 years. All these men over the years had different backgrounds, different political environment,
different cultures, and lived in different geographical areas, but all wrote with one underlying theme:
"The redemption of through Jesus Christ purposed before the world began by design of the Father."
(Finding Jesus in every book...). To corroborate, Jesus himself confirms the foreshadowing and
foundation of the Jesus Event found in the Old Testament in Luke 24:25–27: "How foolish you are,
and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not Christ have to suffer
these things and then enter his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained
to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself." There are numerous messianic
references in the TaNak, however, they can be easily missed without the proper interpretation. A
proper example of a difficult messianic reference to dissect in the Old Testament can be found in the
book of Obadiah. Despite its minor size, the Jesus Event can be depicted through

Canon Scripture And Canon Of Scripture
Canon of Scripture When we talk about Scripture, we have to discuss the source of our revelation. In
fact, without an understanding and personal standpoint/beliefs on the canon of Scripture, one is not
able to build a solid foundation in other matters regarding Scripture, including the authority of
Scripture, the inerrancy, the clarity, the necessity, and the sufficiency. Often the canon of Scripture is
a prevalent topic in the Christian faith among believers as there is a debate which books of the Holy
Bible are considered to be part of the canon. However, although there are other books that have been
added (including the Deutro–Chronical Books in the Roman Catholic church), there are in fact only
66 books in the canon of Scripture. There are 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books
that are included in the canon of Scripture. While some churches (including the Roman Catholic
Church) believe that the church should determine what books are in the New Testament canon, God
is responsible for the canon of Scripture. The Old Testament canon includes the Pentateuch Books
(Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), the Historical Books (Joshua, Judges,
Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and

Parker's Redemption
Flannery O'Connor's story "Parker's Back" introduces us to a man who feels incomplete and is
seeking to fill the empty space in his soul. He attempts to do so the only way he knows how, by
getting tattoos. He continues this until "the front of [his body is] almost completely covered..."

him to mark the change in his life by getting that tattoo. He races to the tattoo parlor and demands to

intricate arabesque of colors but of something haphazard and botched. A huge dissatisfaction would
come over him.... As the space on the front of him for tattoos decreased, his dissatisfaction grew and
became general" (514). He is seeking something greater. This dissatisfaction is amplified when he
meets Sarah Ruth. Even though he finds her physically unattractive, he cannot help falling in love
with her. She is the only person he reveals his true name to. Several factors play into this attraction.
Although Parker's "tattoos were attractive to the kind of girls he liked but who had never liked him
before" (513), Sarah Ruth detests them and calls them "vanity of vanities" (515), and this playing
hard–to–get fascinates him. Sarah Ruth's religiosity attracts him as well: "She had asked him if he
was saved and he had replied that he didn't see it was anything in particular to save him from. After
that, inspired, Parker had said, 'I'd be saved enough if you was to kiss me'" (518). Although religion
was something he ran from previously, Parker desires to be near to it as an attempt to appease his
unrest. But more importantly, Sarah Ruth's demand to know his full name, his identity (something
she does twice), is the strongest attraction. When

Archetypes In Star Wars
Star Wars. Harry Potter. The Marvel Cinematic Universe. These seemingly unrelated movie
franchises seem to not have a lot in common other than the fact that they were all uber–successful.
In actuality, however, they have a lot more in common than that. These movie franchises at one
point or another have served as the modern media mythological framework for a period of time. The
Marvel Cinematic Universe has used a slightly altered Hero's Cycle, archetypes and the teaching of
life lessons to create a modern mythology that fulfills Joseph Campbell's fourth function of myth
and has also become a modern media mythological framework that has already begun to be copied.
Joseph Campbell first introduced the idea of a Hero's Cycle in his book "The Hero with a Thousand

comparing these to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. These movies all have a very similar structure

Relationship Between God And Israel
TB 133–140 The author dives into chapter six by addressing the prophetic themes, covenant,
judgment and redemption. According to the author all the prophets have a special relationship
between God and Israel. They all share a common theme as well. Themes include announcement of
judgment on Israel, punishment, announcement of restoration after a rebellion and comparisons of
Israel. The author also points out what Israel is the main focus throughout the old testament. God
choose Israel and entered into a covenant so his expectations are high compared to other nations
living at that time. Which is why intense images being express the relationship between God and
Israel. Such images include parent–child, husband–wife, church–bride, shepherd–flock, owner–
vineyard and potter–clay. When Israel rebels against God Israel is compared to a prostitute or camel.
However, even when Israel is beyond redemption, the chosen prophets beg for repentance from the
nation of Israel. More common is the image of people turning away from God even when presented
salvation. The author presents the prophetic books in canonical order. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and
the Scroll of the Twelve are presented to the reader providing an introduction of each book.
According to the author the book of Isaiah is a view into the school of prophecy descending from
the great eighth–century. Additionally, evidence has surfaced confirming Isaiah did not write the

Canonization of Scripture (How the Bible Was Compiled?)
I chose this topic because it is one of the hardest things for me to accept concerning "religion" in
general. The mere fact that the individual writings are written by human men "under the inspiration
of God" just bothers me to no end. Knowing the imperfections of man, and how things always get
twisted, embellished, misinterpreted, and/or generally made more grandiose than originally told has
always made me wonder: What were God's original thoughts and meanings on any particular
subject? What has been lost in translation? What has been twisted to suit a particular situation? Why
has God allowed his words to be so misconstrued for so many years?

By the year 200, the four gospels, thirteen Pauline epistles, the Acts of the Apostles, the first epistle
of Peter and the first epistle of John were almost universally accepted; and by the end of the fourth
century, all twenty–seven books that form today's New Testament canon were generally recognized.
The official list of twenty–seven books was ultimately determined on the basis of the collective
experience of the church." 1 (pg. 271)
There were several reasons why the Church would have put together such a list of accepted books.
As time passed after Jesus' death, and the gospel was spreading throughout the middle east and
northern Africa, there were some who "edited" the writings to suit themselves. Variations in the
teachings began to multiply and since the writings were hand–copied in those early times, not all
congregations had the same group of texts, or even similar texts of the same book. Probably the
"three 'major' reasons for the official recognition of the biblical canon were:
1. The spread of false doctrine – The very existence of the church was seriously threatened by
gnosticism.
2. The development of false writings – A major motivation for the canon was pseudepigrapha, false
writings. These came out of a desire to know more about the childhood of Jesus and to have more
information about New Testament personalities.
3. Persecution – In A.D. 303, the Edict of Diocletian declared

Social Injustice Was Rampant During Amos 's Time
Social injustice was rampant during Amos's time. Not only within Israel/Judah, but also in the
foreign kingdoms around them. We are first introduced to the sins of Israel's neighbors in Amos
chapters 1 and 2, which the Lord has found unfavorable which include; crushing Gilead in a cruel
manner ( Amos,1:3 New International Version), selling communities into slavery (Amos 1:6, 1:9),
murdering their brothers, killing women and their babies (Amos 1:11, 1:13), and burning the bones
of others (Amos 2:1). Then we are introduced to the sins of Israel and Judah which include;
forgetting the law (Amos 2:4), worshipping other gods (Amos 2:4), selling people into slavery
(Amos 2:6), treat those under them cruelly (Amos 2:7), and women being shared between father and
son (Amos 2:7) When you look at these two lists it is painfully evident to see that God 's people
were very similar to those around them. Already they were becoming a lot like those around them,
failing to keep themselves pure and separate. When we look at these things that the Lord is finding
issue with, we can see just how many have to do with how they are treating those around them. By
showing his disapproval of these actions, God is showing us His heart on these matters. We can see
that God not only cares about what His people are doing but How His people are treating those
around them and the way that it reflects Him and what it says about His relationship between them
and Him. This speaks to the fact that God wanted

The Parable Of The Wedding Feast In Matthew 22: 1-14
Jesus told the Parable of the Wedding Feast in Matthew 22:1–14. This story is alike in some ways to
the Parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14:15–24), but the occasion is different, and it has some
important distinctions. To better understand this story, it is vital to know some basic facts about
weddings in Jesus' day.
In Jewish society, the parents of the engaged usually drew up the marriage agreement. The bride and
groom would meet, perhaps for the first time, when this agreement was signed. The couple was
considered married at this point, but they would separate until the actual time of the ceremony. The
bride would remain with her parents, and the groom would leave to prepare their home. This could
take quite a while. When the home was all was ready, the groom would return for his bride
unannounced. The marriage ceremony would then take place, and the wedding feast would follow.
The wedding feast was one of the most joyous occasions in Jewish life and could last for up to a
week. In His parable, Jesus compares heaven to a wedding banquet that a king had prepared for his
son (Matthew 22:2). Many people had been invited, but when the time for the banquet came and the
table was set, those invited refused to come (verses 4–5). In fact, the king's servants who brought the
joyful message were mistreated and even killed (verse 6).
The king, enraged at the response of those who had been invited, sent his army to avenge the death
of his servants (verse 7). He then sent

Emotions of Captivity Explored in Psalm 137

  • 1. The Emotions of Captivity in Psalm 137 Essay The book of Psalms contains some of the most beloved pieces of scripture across centuries and cultures of this world. Psalms have been frequently cited is sermons, devotionals, movies, poetry, and songs. Most often, Psalms are attributed to King David of the 10th century BCE. But regardless of the authorship of the different psalms, each seem to carry a special place in describing human relationships to God, to country, to friends, to enemies and more. As time has progressed, certain psalms have become favorites because of their encouraging and uplifting messages, such as the timeless Psalm 23. However, other psalms are neglected in Christian circles because of the difficulty they present in interpretation. Often, these psalms are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For there our captors demanded of us songs, And our tormentors mirth, saying, "Sing us one of the songs of Zion." How can we sing the Lord's song in a foreign land? If I forget you, O Jerusalem, May my right hand forget her skill. May my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth. If I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem, above my chief joy. Remember, O Lord, against the sons of Edom the day of Jerusalem, who said, "Raze it, raze it, to its very foundation." O daughter of Babylon, you devastated one, how blessed will be the one who repays you with the recompense with which you have repaid us. How blessed will be the one who seizes and dashes your little ones against the rock. (Ps 137, NASB) It is not often that theologians can agree upon the date of authorship of a text, but Psalm 137 is an exception. It is widely accepted that this psalm was written during or shortly after the exilic waves of the Southern Kingdom during the Babylonian captivity of 597 BCE and 587 BCE , extending to 538 BCE . While no specific author is identified as the author of Psalm 137, it certainly is not King David due to the time elapse from King David's reign and the Babylonian Captivity. The anguish described in the beginning of the Psalm paired with the vengeful remarks at the end of the Psalm, in addition to the reference to Babylon while the writer's heart longs for Zion undoubtedly make this Psalm a description of the exile written during or shortly ... • 3. Corett Coretta Scott Research Paper On April 27,1927 something astonishing happened in a small city by the name of Marion in Alabama. On this particular Tuesday a queen was born, by the name of Coretta Scott. She was the daughter of Obadiah and Bernice Scott who were country folk that owned their own farm. She was also one of their three children that all grew up in what I would call racist america. Where you could be punched, stomped or beaten for just having the skin you were born with. Also, where many people believe if you weren't white it wasn't right. Even though she was treated unfairly she still did what she had to do. Her parents made sure that her and her siblings got an education which required them to travel twelve miles a day on foot. After, six years of attending a poorly elementary and four years at a decent Lincoln high she graduated as the valedictorian. So, through her parents she knew by any means necessary she had to fight for what was right and what she deserved. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 5. The Book of Obadiah This brief book of the Hebrew Bible is very significant in that it is one of only two of the Minor Prophetic books that are addressed entirely to a nation other than Israel and Judah. The Book of Obadiah deals with the ancient feud between Israel and the nation of Edom, between the descendants of Jacob and those of his brother Esau. Through the prophet Obadiah, the Lord expressed His indignation at the nation of Edom. When they should have been helping their relatives, they were gloating over the Israelites' problems and raiding their homes. "The Book of Obadiah brings an important message about oppressors and the oppressed, betrayers and those who have been betrayed. Arising out of a time of national crisis, it has a word for innocent bystanders and also survivors." A day was coming, the day of the Lord, when all these wrongs would be righted. The Lord would bring justice to the world. Rabbi Halpren is of the belief that this small book is worthy of theological scholarship and hermeneutical exegesis. He says; "Obadiah is more fortunate that most prophetic books of the Bible despite its miniscule size. It is one of the few biblical books read in the synagogue in its entirety and its last verse is recited daily in the Jewish liturgy. It is generally neglected as an object of study probably because of its unimpressive dimensions. Yet, it is an archetypical example of prophetic style and content." The size of the book does not diminish its importance and worth ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Book Of Hosea Essay Scholar Paul House expresses the focal point of the Book of the Twelve portrays the attributes of God. House brings to light that there is a threefold movement or development of the emphases. The Book of Hosea through Micah warnings dominates the depiction of Yahweh. The Book of Nahum through Zephaniah, judgement texts dominate. Lastly, Haggai through Malachi highlights the restoration. A common theme among the pre–exilic prophets was proclamation and prophecy regarding repentance of Israel and Judah, no repentance would bring forth judgment, and despite the forthcoming judgement, there was still hope for the future and restoration. We will discuss six Minor Prophets and their prophecies, and there correlation to the New Testament scriptures and prophecies. The six Minor Prophets that will be discussed are Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Micah, and Habakkuk (Hays, 2010, p. 262). Hosea ministered from 782 BC – 686 BC, and was a prophet of Israel (Bible.org, 2017). We will discuss three scriptures that connect the Old Testament scriptures of Hosea to the New Testament scriptures. "For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings" (Hosea 6:6, NIV). This correlates to Matthew 9:13, "But go and learn ... • 9. The Struggle In Mary E. Wilkins Freeman's A New England Nun "A woman is like a tea bag; you never know how strong it is until it is in hot water." The imagery created by Eleanor Roosevelt emphasizes the emotional strength of a woman, which may often be overshadowed by her physical inferiority, as compared to her male counterpart. The hot water is a representation of the hostile or conflicting situation that women encounter on a daily basis. This would come in the form of emotional obstacles and mental tribulations, as they have to oppose many of society's wishes before they can achieve their dreams. Although women may appear fragile, docile, and porous to the desires of men, their course of action as they overcome their adversity would prove their character to be strong, willful, and self–reliant. Authors Mary E. Wilkins Freeman, in "The England Nun," and Nella Larsen, in "Sanctuary," portray protagonists that exhibit characteristics of strong–will and independence that resist the social confinements of their time. In both cases, the protagonists have to overcome the obstacle that is classified as an internal conflict; therefore, their ultimate decision presents their strong mental ... On the contrary, when Joe Dagget is introduced, it is evident that Louisa willingly partakes in the stereotypical roles, merely because they are her passion. • 11. A Summary On Jonah : The Book Of Jonah Jonah (The Book of) Jonah is a book of the Bible written by the Johan himself approximately 785– 760 BC. (BibleGateway, n.d.) This book of the Bible has only four chapters in it and it is fixed in the Bible after the book of Obadiah and before Nahum. In the four short chapters for this book of the Bible Johan goes from turning his back on the Lord, going back to the Lord, the once again questioning the Lord. The first chapter shows Jonah's defiance of the Lord. The Lord asked Jonah to go Nineveh and announce the Lord's judgement. But Jonah turned and went the other direction away from the Lord. (Johan 1:3) Then while on the ship getting away from Nineveh Jonah is swallowed by a whale. In Chapter 2 Jonah was inside the whale and he starts to pray again to the Lord, telling him that even though he is in the situation he is in, he will still turn to the Lord always. So, the Lord commands the whale to sit Jonah out. (Jonah 2:10) The third chapter explains how Jonah is asked by the Lord to proclaim his message of judgement on Nineveh, Jonah did as the Lord instructed. The people off Nineveh changing their ways and the judgement was spared by the Lord. Chapter four of Jonah explains how Jonah becomes angry with the Lord because he does not believe the Lord should have been so gracious with the people of Nineveh. Jonah believed that they should not have been spared. (Jonah 4:1–2). Even though this is a short book it has a major theme to it, the Lord's compassion for ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Jesus is regarded by Christians as the Messiah of the Hebrew prophecies and the savior of mankind. The implications in the Hebrew Bible is that the Messiah is the special servant of God; the name that God chose for Jesus. It means the person whom God sent to save people from their sin and be their king; the only person who can put us right with God; God promised the Jews that the Messiah would save them and be their king; they did not believe that Jesus was the Messiah when he came; Jews are still waiting for a Messiah; the person who will come again to rule in God's kingdom for ever; God's anointed person; Christ ... • 15. Comparison Of Major And Minor Prophets In the last section of the Bible there are two parts. The two parts are the Major and Minor Prophets. The Major prophets are in the books of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel. The minor Prophets are in the books of Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi, these books form that last segment of the Old Testament cannon. The authors of these books were the Hebrew prophets, which makes sense because a Hebrew prophet is a spokesperson for God. The twofold aspect of the prophet's ministry included declaring God's message for people of their day and foretelling God's actions in the future (Hindson). Luckily, the baboon troop he was studying was not affected but the rates were growing rapidly for the Olemelopo baboon troop. Why Does Jesus Use The Sign Of Jonah First, his comments from Luke 11:29ff: When the crowds were increasing, He began to say, 'This generation is an evil generation, it seeks for a sign but no sign will be given to it except the sign of Jonah. For as Jonah became a sign to the people of Nineveh, so will the Son of Man be to this generation...the men of Nineveh will rise up at the judgement with this generation and condemn it, for they repented at the preaching of Jonah, and behold, someone greater than Jonah is here.' We should note that Jesus does not use this occasion to condemn Jonah or praise him. The "sign of Jonah" is not said to be his three days and nights in the fish, but rather that he preached God's word to that generation of Ninevites as Jesus was preaching God's word to His generation. By refraining from making the clear connection between Jonah and the elder son, Jesus may be yet again be extending one more kindness to Jonah. Now, some additional observations on Jesus' comments concerning Jonah: Jesus is silent regarding Jonah's aberrant behavior and salvation, probably because, at this point, this was not His purpose in citing Jonah. The issue addressed by Jesus was the failure of His Jewish listeners to hear, repent and believe God as the pagan Ninevites had done. Jesus was complimenting the Ninevites, not Jonah nor His listeners. Jesus' comparison of Himself to Jonah had to do with their common experience in their call, preaching, suffering, death (or near death in the case of Jonah) and return to life, rather than a comparison of the holiness of their character. It must be noted, however, that Jesus does say that He is greater than Jonah. This, I think, says it all. In addition, there are many parents that feel graphic novels contain explicit content which can take focus away from the literary merit of the novel. Obviously this opinion is biased, because many times mature content makes the novel more intriguing for the reader– as it relates better to reality. A sacred text is what a religion believes is holy and authoritative. Religious texts show its followers what to do in worship, daily living and conduct. While Christianity and Judaism have numerous similarities because of the mother–daughter link, differences still exist. The sacred text for Judaism is the Tanach while for Christianity the Bible is used. This essay will explore the structure of each sacred text, the type of literature is in each canon, authorship of the text and how it is used in daily practice such as food, interpretation of the commandments and how a Torah is used in a synagogue. STRUCTURE OF EACH CANON The Bible is known as 'authoritative written source' (Bowley, 1999) and is a library of 66 books and is made of two parts: Old Testament (39 books) and New Testament (27 books). The Bible was only officially put together around the third century. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew and Aramaic while the New Testament was written in Greek. During the Reformation, scholars wanted to allow everyone to read the Bible in their own languages (Beck et al, 2000). Now, the Bible is written in over 1600 languages. However, Jewish people only read the Torah in Hebrew. The Old Testament is similar to the Torah where the books are exactly the same. The New Testament is made up of the gospels and letters. This event was the Montgomery Bus Boycott in which many black people opposed the city's policy of racial segregation on its public bus system. The struggle lasted from December 1st, 1955 to December 20th, 1956. The deciding factor was that most black people in Montgomery agreed to follow this act and did not ride the buses. This proved highly in favor of them as they were the majority of bus riders, soon after, the bus companies saw a drastic drop in the revenue, which led to the United States Supreme Court to declare that these laws were unconstitutional. Analysis Of The Book ' Lamentations, Psalm 137 During this time we see that the people of Jerusalem are in exile and it seems like the people have lost faith in the Lord as their lives come down in ruins. Only a few survived as Jeremiah said and these few people who survived will be given a new beginning from God. God has not abandoned his people, He sends these voices to His people to reassure them and lead them as if He is their shepherd. And during this time there have been a lot of powerful feelings being expressed whilst interpreting their faith. A few examples of this movement during Exile would include the Book of Lamentations, Psalm 137, the Book of Habakkuk and finally the Book of the Prophet Obadiah. The Book of Lamentations is considered to be five poems that were said by tradition to be composed by the prophet Jeremiah after he knew Jerusalem would fall. The poems manage with the obliteration of the city and the occasions nearly identified with that occasion, an unnerving knowledge that seriously tried the faith of the individuals who put their trust in Yahweh. The poems depict some of these terrors. Jerusalem was set under attack, and starvation drove the individuals to hopelessness. Psalm 137 has a mixture of a soft humming melancholy and fierce patriotism of the Judeans. This Psalm is made for Israel in her captivity. Released us over it, taking its commonplace significance. Biblical Eras Of Creation, The Patriarchs, And The Ketuvim Referred to as "Tanak" by Jews, the Hebrew Bible contains twenty–four books characterized by three categories: The Torah, the Nevi'im, and the Ketuvim, which outline the history and beliefs of the Jewish faith. The Torah, commonly known as the "Law of Moses," contains the books of Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These five narrative books cover the Biblical eras of creation, the patriarchs, and the exodus. In Genesis 1, God created everything from nothing at His will in six days and proclaimed all of it "good." Humankind was created, Adam and Eve, in God's image, and they lived in the pure garden of Eden. Sin is introduced to the world when a serpent convinces Eve, who subsequently convinces Adam, to eat from the the tree of good and evil, which God strictly forbade. God judged their sin, bans them from Eden, they went out in the world, and birthed sons Cain and Abel. After Cain killed Abel out of jealousy, God again judged sin by cursing Cain, but exemplified forgiveness in Genesis 6 through his promise to curse whoever tried to hurt him. Generations later, descendant of Adam, Noah, is introduced, as well as his wife Naamah and their sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth. In Genesis 6, God decided to start over, but saved Noah, his family, and animals, by telling Noah to build an ark to endure the great flood. History of the Bible Essay Brittany Stewart Instructor Pursell English 132 9 December 2009 The History of the Canonization of the Bible The process by which the English Bible, as it is known to the English culture today, was compiled is an extraordinary thing to see. The Bible consists of two parts: the Old Testament and the New Testament. The process by which both Testaments were written and then canonized into one book transpired over a period of many years. Once the canonization of the Bible officially came to an end, it was translated into English. Since then, many versions of the modern Bible have been made. Since the individual books of the Bible became scattered as they were written, people set forth to preserve God's Word by compiling them into one ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He therefore separates the Apocrypha from the main part of the Bible, putting it in an appendix. In AD 1546, the Council of Trent convenes and settles once and for all that the Old Testament consists of all forty–six books ("Development of the Difficult Canon"). The New Testament was canonized over a period of approximately four hundred years (Stotesberg). From AD 50–125, the books which in the end constitute the New Testament were written. Simultaneously, other books, which did not end up being included in the final canon, were produced. These books are the Epistle of Barnabas, the Didache, I Clement, the seven letters of Ignatius of Antioch, etc. ("Development of the Difficult Canon"). As more and more books were written, Christians realized that it was imperative that they gather and consolidate this material before it became lost. Sometime before AD 100, ten of Paul's letters were gathered and combined into their own canon. The Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John) were combined to form another canon soon after the canonization of Paul's letters. The Gospels and Paul's letters became the main body of a new group of Scriptures that would soon become the New Testament. Soon Acts, I Peter, I John, and Revelation were inserted into this body of Scripture. Following this, the rest of the books were added to the New Testament (Barker). In AD 140, Marcion, a heretical teacher who discarded the Old Testament as Scripture, took parts of Luke and also ten ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Research Paper On The Abrahamic Covenant The Israelites disobeyed every command in the Abrahamic and Mosaic Covenants, so God made the Davidic covenant as a way to bring their relationship with God back. God made several promises to David through the prophet Nathan. God promised David and Israel that the Messiah would come from one of David's family members and would establish a kingdom that would last forever. God told David that, "Your house and your kingdom will endure forever before me; your throne will be established forever." This covenant is truly unconditional, just like the Abrahamic covenant was. There are no conditions placed in order to reach fulfillment. In order for the promises to be fulfilled, it rested entirely on God's faithfulness. It did not matter if David or Israel was obedient. There is a distinct connection between the Abrahamic and Davidic covenants. The subsequent covenants that God made with Israel were based off of the Abrahamic covenant. Abraham was promised several descendants just as David was. God's intention was to use all the children to bless the world. The promises to Abraham of descendants, blessings from God, and land were still a vital part of the Old Testament. The promise of land was however reaffirmed in the Davidic covenant. The Davidic covenant with the now promise of a kingdom would expand from Abraham's covenant. According to the bible, in the book of Kings, Elijah was not only a devoted prophet of God, but he also served as a worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel, under King Ahab's reign. Elijah is remembered for his remarkable faith and devotion to God. In writing this essay, I will tell the story of one the many adventures that occurred in Elijah 's lifetime. Of course, there are so many alterations and rewritten versions of the bible, that I have no idea what to believe. No one truly knows what happened, for everyone who could have, died long ago. Either way, all the different versions of the story seem to have the same basic outcome. In telling you this, I will try to incorporate the information that is mentioned throughout the book, "The Old Testament Story, Ninth Edition" (by John H. Tullock and Mark McEntire) and some of what I have been taught myself over my twenty– eight years of life. It all began when King Ahab, and his deceitful wife Jezebel demanded for their kingdom to worship the false God of Baal. As a result, they ordered all the prophets of the Lord to be put to death. Elijah was the only one to survive this horrible purge and went to confront King Ahab. He told the King that a three–year drought would be brought upon Israel. This was to challenge the people's false prophet, Baal and eventually teach them a very valuable lesson in whose God was real. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 59. Understanding The Biblical Worldview Of The Bible Of Two... Understanding The Biblical Worldview "There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death" (Proverb 14:12.) In order to fully comprehend this proverb, one must go back to the beginning of the Bible. There is a story in the Bible of two brothers, Jacob and Esau. This story begins in the book of Genesis with a man named Isaac, praying to the Lord on behalf of his barren wife Rebekah. The Lord answered Isaac's prayer and Rebekah conceived. The Bible states that the children struggled together within her, therefore, she went to inquire of the Lord for an explanation. The Lord told Rebekah that she would give birth to two boys who will represent two nations; one shall be stronger than the other and that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Henderson states that a worldview is "a commitment to a basic view about reality;" furthermore, he states that a worldview "determines the shape of someone's emotions, one's wisdom, one's desires, and one's will." (Henderson, "What is a Worldview?") These definitions clearly describes Esau's scenario. Esau had a basic view about reality. He believed in himself and his cunning ability as a hunter. In a moment of sudden urge, his emotions and desires bonded together to lust after his fleshly craving, which led him to despise his birthright. The Bible also states that Esau went his own way. Consequently, Esau's worldview caused him to live by his own rules and to take his own pathway in life. This illustration is also a representation of most people in today's society and in time past, they do what ever they feel is right, which is also the reason for most "isms" and "schisms" such as materialism, hedonism, relativism, communism, atheism, just to name a few. The Bible calls the end of these ways, "... the ways of death" (Proverb 14:12). Most importantly, God is absent from this viewpoint. Unlike the Worldview, the Biblical worldview is Christ–centered. Dr. Henderson defines this view as being, " centered on Jesus Christ, the ultimate Revelation of God, and as the God–man who accomplished our reconciliation to God through his life, death, and resurrection from the dead" (Henderson, "What is the Christian Worldview?") Jacob represents this viewpoint. Initially, Jacob also ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Foreshadowing In The Old Testament The Christian perspective of the Old Testament as the foreshadowing and foundation of the Jesus Event goes as followed: The Old Testament, also known as the Hebrew Scriptures, or the Old Covenant, contains myth, history, faith, and culture of the Israelites. The Israelites are descendants of Abraham and Sarah, then the descendants of Jacob which become the 12 tribes of Israel, then the only tribe left after the Assyrians wiped them out was the tribe of Judah, hence the name: Jews. As Christians, we believe that the Old Testament is one story made up of many stories. We also believe that all the sections of it, the Torah ( also know as the Pentitute), historical books, wisdom books, and prophetic books all lay the foundation for the New Testament and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Old Testament was written by around 40 different men over a time period of approximately 1600 years. All these men over the years had different backgrounds, different political environment, different cultures, and lived in different geographical areas, but all wrote with one underlying theme: "The redemption of through Jesus Christ purposed before the world began by design of the Father." (Finding Jesus in every book...). To corroborate, Jesus himself confirms the foreshadowing and foundation of the Jesus Event found in the Old Testament in Luke 24:25–27: "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory? And beginning with Moses and all the prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself." There are numerous messianic references in the TaNak, however, they can be easily missed without the proper interpretation. A proper example of a difficult messianic reference to dissect in the Old Testament can be found in the book of Obadiah. Despite its minor size, the Jesus Event can be depicted through ... • 63. Marvel's Cinematic Universe: Character Analysis Well, kids – Phase II of Marvel's Cinematic Universe (MCU) is officially in the books. And, from start to finish, quite a few vital characters have been added to the fold. Captain American: The Winter Solider marked the debut of the high–flying Falcon, and also brought Bucky Barnes back into the mix as the stealthy assassin, known as the Winter Soldier – while Age of Ultron inserted the cape–bearing AI, The Vision, plus the seemingly untapped potential of the Scarlet Witch. Pretty awesome additions, right? Still, the Avengers has noticeably been without one of its key ingredients. Of course, that's a reference to Ant–Man – a character that helped establish the Avengers from the ground level, at least in the pages of the source material. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ant–Man serves as a significant change–of–pace for Rudd, who most certainly thrives in the role as Scott Lang – as the quippy, ex–convict that only wants to do right by his daughter. Honestly, Rudd was a bit of an odd select for the lead of Ant–Man, yet he only takes mere minutes for him to solidify himself and his character as another brilliant casting choice by Marvel. Squarely behind Rudd is a supporting cast that rivals any other Marvel film to date. Obviously, the main contributors are Michael Douglas (as a considerably aged Hank Pym), who fits in wonderfully in a mentor role. No, he never gets in on the action–packed sequences, but Douglas' charisma makes up for it ten– fold. Similarly, Evangeline Lilly contributes heavily, as well – and while he role in the grand scheme of things is initially unclear, stick around through the credits to see what the MCU has in store for her in the ... • 65. Canon Scripture And Canon Of Scripture Canon of Scripture When we talk about Scripture, we have to discuss the source of our revelation. In fact, without an understanding and personal standpoint/beliefs on the canon of Scripture, one is not able to build a solid foundation in other matters regarding Scripture, including the authority of Scripture, the inerrancy, the clarity, the necessity, and the sufficiency. Often the canon of Scripture is a prevalent topic in the Christian faith among believers as there is a debate which books of the Holy Bible are considered to be part of the canon. However, although there are other books that have been added (including the Deutro–Chronical Books in the Roman Catholic church), there are in fact only 66 books in the canon of Scripture. There are 39 Old Testament books and 27 New Testament books that are included in the canon of Scripture. While some churches (including the Roman Catholic Church) believe that the church should determine what books are in the New Testament canon, God is responsible for the canon of Scripture. The Old Testament canon includes the Pentateuch Books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy), the Historical Books (Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles, 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, and Ester), the Poetical Books (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon), and the Prophetical Books ( Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel, Daniel, Hosea, Joel, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, ... • 67. Essay about Parker’s Redemption Parker's Redemption Flannery O'Connor's story "Parker's Back" introduces us to a man who feels incomplete and is seeking to fill the empty space in his soul. He attempts to do so the only way he knows how, by getting tattoos. He continues this until "the front of [his body is] almost completely covered..." (514). In fact, Parker even considers getting a religious tattoo to appease his over–zealously religious wife Sarah Ruth. A brush with death that is literally a "burning bush" experience drives him to mark the change in his life by getting that tattoo. He races to the tattoo parlor and demands to see the religious tattoos. He chooses a Byzantine Christ. In this story, Flannery O'Connor tries to show that although Parker's attempts to ... This dissatisfaction is amplified when he meets Sarah Ruth. Even though he finds her physically unattractive, he cannot help falling in love with her. She is the only person he reveals his true name to. Several factors play into this attraction. Although Parker's "tattoos were attractive to the kind of girls he liked but who had never liked him before" (513), Sarah Ruth detests them and calls them "vanity of vanities" (515), and this playing hard–to–get fascinates him. Sarah Ruth's religiosity attracts him as well: "She had asked him if he was saved and he had replied that he didn't see it was anything in particular to save him from. After that, inspired, Parker had said, 'I'd be saved enough if you was to kiss me'" (518). Although religion was something he ran from previously, Parker desires to be near to it as an attempt to appease his unrest. But more importantly, Sarah Ruth's demand to know his full name, his identity (something she does twice), is the strongest attraction. When ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Archetypes In Star Wars Star Wars. Harry Potter. The Marvel Cinematic Universe. These seemingly unrelated movie franchises seem to not have a lot in common other than the fact that they were all uber–successful. In actuality, however, they have a lot more in common than that. These movie franchises at one point or another have served as the modern media mythological framework for a period of time. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has used a slightly altered Hero's Cycle, archetypes and the teaching of life lessons to create a modern mythology that fulfills Joseph Campbell's fourth function of myth and has also become a modern media mythological framework that has already begun to be copied. Joseph Campbell first introduced the idea of a Hero's Cycle in his book "The Hero with a Thousand Faces." The Hero's Cycle is a series of several steps that a typical hero story, whether an ancient Greek story such as Hercules or a modern story told through film like Star Wars, follows. These movies all have a very similar structure but it is often the lessons that the story focuses in on that set the movies apart. The Harry Potter books and movies, for example, placed a much larger emphasis on the problems facing a typical school child, than really any movie series had before. This is what made it unique. • 74. Relationship Between God And Israel TB 133–140 The author dives into chapter six by addressing the prophetic themes, covenant, judgment and redemption. According to the author all the prophets have a special relationship between God and Israel. They all share a common theme as well. Themes include announcement of judgment on Israel, punishment, announcement of restoration after a rebellion and comparisons of Israel. The author also points out what Israel is the main focus throughout the old testament. God choose Israel and entered into a covenant so his expectations are high compared to other nations living at that time. Which is why intense images being express the relationship between God and Israel. Such images include parent–child, husband–wife, church–bride, shepherd–flock, owner– vineyard and potter–clay. When Israel rebels against God Israel is compared to a prostitute or camel. However, even when Israel is beyond redemption, the chosen prophets beg for repentance from the nation of Israel. More common is the image of people turning away from God even when presented salvation. The author presents the prophetic books in canonical order. Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and the Scroll of the Twelve are presented to the reader providing an introduction of each book. According to the author the book of Isaiah is a view into the school of prophecy descending from the great eighth–century. Additionally, evidence has surfaced confirming Isaiah did not write the entire book himself but rather is a complied ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 76. Canonization of Scripture (How the Bible Was Compiled?) I chose this topic because it is one of the hardest things for me to accept concerning "religion" in general. The mere fact that the individual writings are written by human men "under the inspiration of God" just bothers me to no end. Knowing the imperfections of man, and how things always get twisted, embellished, misinterpreted, and/or generally made more grandiose than originally told has always made me wonder: What were God's original thoughts and meanings on any particular subject? What has been lost in translation? What has been twisted to suit a particular situation? Why has God allowed his words to be so misconstrued for so many years? The Hebrew canon, known to us as the Old Testament, is a collection of 24 "books" accepted by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... By the year 200, the four gospels, thirteen Pauline epistles, the Acts of the Apostles, the first epistle of Peter and the first epistle of John were almost universally accepted; and by the end of the fourth century, all twenty–seven books that form today's New Testament canon were generally recognized. The official list of twenty–seven books was ultimately determined on the basis of the collective experience of the church." 1 (pg. 271) There were several reasons why the Church would have put together such a list of accepted books. As time passed after Jesus' death, and the gospel was spreading throughout the middle east and northern Africa, there were some who "edited" the writings to suit themselves. Variations in the teachings began to multiply and since the writings were hand–copied in those early times, not all congregations had the same group of texts, or even similar texts of the same book. Probably the "three 'major' reasons for the official recognition of the biblical canon were: 1. The spread of false doctrine – The very existence of the church was seriously threatened by gnosticism. 2. The development of false writings – A major motivation for the canon was pseudepigrapha, false writings. These came out of a desire to know more about the childhood of Jesus and to have more information about New Testament personalities. 3. Persecution – In A.D. 303, the Edict of Diocletian declared ... • 78. Social Injustice Was Rampant During Amos 's Time Social injustice was rampant during Amos's time. Not only within Israel/Judah, but also in the foreign kingdoms around them. We are first introduced to the sins of Israel's neighbors in Amos chapters 1 and 2, which the Lord has found unfavorable which include; crushing Gilead in a cruel manner ( Amos,1:3 New International Version), selling communities into slavery (Amos 1:6, 1:9), murdering their brothers, killing women and their babies (Amos 1:11, 1:13), and burning the bones of others (Amos 2:1). Then we are introduced to the sins of Israel and Judah which include; forgetting the law (Amos 2:4), worshipping other gods (Amos 2:4), selling people into slavery (Amos 2:6), treat those under them cruelly (Amos 2:7), and women being shared between father and son (Amos 2:7) When you look at these two lists it is painfully evident to see that God 's people were very similar to those around them. Already they were becoming a lot like those around them, failing to keep themselves pure and separate. When we look at these things that the Lord is finding issue with, we can see just how many have to do with how they are treating those around them. By showing his disapproval of these actions, God is showing us His heart on these matters. We can see that God not only cares about what His people are doing but How His people are treating those around them and the way that it reflects Him and what it says about His relationship between them and Him. This speaks to the fact that God wanted ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 80. The Parable Of The Wedding Feast In Matthew 22: 1-14 Jesus told the Parable of the Wedding Feast in Matthew 22:1–14. This story is alike in some ways to the Parable of the Great Banquet (Luke 14:15–24), but the occasion is different, and it has some important distinctions. To better understand this story, it is vital to know some basic facts about weddings in Jesus' day. In Jewish society, the parents of the engaged usually drew up the marriage agreement. The bride and groom would meet, perhaps for the first time, when this agreement was signed. The couple was considered married at this point, but they would separate until the actual time of the ceremony. The bride would remain with her parents, and the groom would leave to prepare their home. This could take quite a while. When the home was all was ready, the groom would return for his bride unannounced. The marriage ceremony would then take place, and the wedding feast would follow. The wedding feast was one of the most joyous occasions in Jewish life and could last for up to a week. In His parable, Jesus compares heaven to a wedding banquet that a king had prepared for his son (Matthew 22:2). Many people had been invited, but when the time for the banquet came and the table was set, those invited refused to come (verses 4–5). In fact, the king's servants who brought the joyful message were mistreated and even killed (verse 6). The king, enraged at the response of those who had been invited, sent his army to avenge the death of his servants (verse 7). He then sent ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
