O’Connell
Daniel O'Connell led the Repeal Association in 1840s Ireland to campaign for the repeal of the Act of Union between Ireland and Britain. While he had some success in achieving reforms earlier, the Repeal campaign struggled to gain widespread support and was ultimately ended in 1843 when a planned rally was banned. The failure of repeal was due to a lack of support from the Catholic middle class and divisions with more radical groups, as well as the united opposition of Irish and English Protestants under the strengthened Prime Minister Peel.

Parnell had great political skills and was able to play a key role as a power broker, holding the balance of power between the Conservatives and Liberals. However, his career was ended by a personal scandal involving Kitty O'Shea in 1890. While Parnell was a highly effective political leader, some argue he underestimated the challenges of achieving Home Rule and gaining the support of Ulster Unionists.
Gladstone And Ireland
Gladstone made Irish reform a key issue in 1868 by forcing an election on disestablishing the Church of Ireland. He believed pacifying Ireland was his mission, partly in response to Fenian outrages that convinced the British public of the importance of Irish issues. Gladstone was concerned with justice and saw disestablishment as a way to unite the Liberal party while taking initiative from Disraeli. The Irish Church Act of 1869 broke the links between church and state in Ireland by ending tithe payments and disestablishing the Church of Ireland, though it made little practical difference for most Irish Catholics and Protestants.
Daniel O’Connell
Daniel O'Connell led the campaign for Catholic emancipation in Ireland in the 1820s. He formed the Catholic Association in 1823 to promote Catholic civil and political rights. The Association organized large outdoor meetings to rally support and put pressure on the government. By 1828, the issue came to a head, and Wellington reluctantly agreed to push for emancipation despite opposition from some members of his party. The Catholic Relief Act of 1829 granted Catholics the right to become MPs and hold public office, representing a major victory for O'Connell and Irish Catholic civil rights.
Act Of Union
1) The Act of Union passed in 1801 united the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Kingdom of Ireland, replacing the Irish Parliament with direct rule from London.
2) Supporters argued it would strengthen military defense and the economy through free trade, while opponents felt it threatened Ireland's separate identity and institutions.
3) The Irish Catholic majority felt betrayed when union did not lead to the promised emancipation from penal laws against Catholics.
Bangladesh Flooding
Bangladesh suffers from severe annual flooding due to its geography as a low-lying delta situated at the confluence of major rivers in Asia. The 1998 floods were especially devastating, submerging over 57% of the country and causing over 1000 deaths and widespread property damage. Both natural causes like heavy monsoon rains and human causes such as upstream dam building and deforestation exacerbate the flooding. Managing these floods remains a major challenge requiring solutions like improved flood forecasting, embankments, and preparedness through designated evacuation centers.
Communication
Communication in business involves transferring information from one part of the business to another to create an outcome or change. There are formal communication channels that are established and agreed upon as well as informal "grapevine" channels. The communication process involves a sender, a channel or medium to transfer the message through, and a receiver. Common communication methods are verbal, written, electronic, and visual. The appropriate communication medium depends on factors like the need for a record, the number of people that need to reach, confidentiality, and cost. Barriers to successful communication can include the ability of the sender to understand the message, the content and method of communication, skills of the receiver, organizational factors, cultural attitudes, and technical capabilities.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in Education
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
