The Dravidian Movement emerged in the early 20th century in response to Brahmin domination in the Madras Presidency region of British India. The spread of Western education and Christianity gave non-Brahmin castes new awareness and resentment of upper caste control. The Justice Party was formed in 1917 to counter Congress Party influence, but it had a narrow urban base. In 1925, E.V. Ramaswami ("Periyar") founded the self-respect movement with a Dravidian ideology to remove Brahmin social and political control.
