I started out
wanting to
understand the
whole universe.
And ended up learning to make
everything that interested me…
Yahoo! Google The World
We developed breakthroughs;
I was called a genius.
Yahoo! Google The World
Then something changed.
I began to teach. It mattered.
I learned that the rest of the
gaps were on the inside.
As an engineer, I had to figure out how.
So I started working on the psychological
antecedents to global prosperity.
I only kept what worked in practice, and
called these techniques mental debugs.

The Democratization of Genius

  1. From when I was quite young I was interested in how things work – in fact I wanted to know how the whole universe worked. So at age 15 I got my first job – doing astrophysical research on active galactic nuclei
  2. Speeding up – then moved to studying star-forming regions and put stuff in space, built robots that won the world robotic soccer competition, was in a dozen bands, with songs on 20 albums, shipped several versions of microsoft outlook, was a comic artist
  3. Over the years I’ve worked on a wide range of products – from mass-market software like Microsoft Outlook to pioneering hardware like Google Glass. And instead of that experience leading to greater certainty of exactly how to build products, it has inspired greater curiosity in all the ways the people can work together to solve tough problems. :: But over time it became clear to me that the world needs a lot more than just technology products. Through a program she was enrolled in, my wife taught me about the many challenges of global sustainability – and it helped inspire me to bring these rapid problem solving techniques to the challenges that face humanity today. :: So, for the last year and half, I’ve been working with social entrepreneurs on the world’s biggest problems – things like providing access to clean water, essential micronutrients, and power to the 2 billion folks around the world living on less than 2 dollars a day. Not just thinking about it, but getting on the ground, starting small, finding ways to get practical results and experimenting and improvising until things began to work. ----------------------------- What I brought to the table was a unique history of solving problems at impossible speeds – oftentimes 10 or even 100 times faster than standard practice – In the process I had established an extensive toolkit of rapid prototyping and organizational design techniques that helped create software and hardware technologies and services that have reached hundreds of millions worldwide. (Some of them are up there) But it struck me that these techniques may be good for something beyond creating more technology, so I set off on a mission to share these techniques for rapid invention and problem-solving to teams worldwide, spanning the gamut from social entrepreneurs, policy makers, corporate executives, and communities in the developing world. :: helped to launch services like Yahoo Answers - growing it from 0 to 90 million customers in 26 countries within 1 year. And helped build the Google X division leading to pioneering hardware like Google Glass and Self-driving.
