ABSTRACT: Networked commons-based peer production, as in Wikipedia or in open source communities, has occasionally been depicted as a revolutionary socio-economic system with fundamental consequences for the future of capitalism. These conceptions are, however, often prone to neglecting the material boundaries of the economy. In a "digitalist" utopia (Pasquinelli 2008), production is portrayed as a pure symbolic exchange, independent of the physical, biological, financial or socio-cultural conditions for its reproduction. With the current growth in the networking infrastructures, it is becoming more obvious that the so-called immaterial economy is tightly connected to the constraints of the finite planet. In my presentation, I will examine the political ecologies of immaterial commoning by focusing on one of its material boundaries: data storage capacity. By following the events and discourses unfolding from the 2011 Thailand floods that caused an unforeseen shock in the data storage markets, I seek to illuminate some more general interlinkages between the practices of immaterial commoning and its material underpinnings.

Or you might have simply experienced the sound problems of slowness, rigidity, bureaucracy, disengagement along with various kinds of waste and bottlenecks that “traditional” organisational models generate and suffer nowadays. What if OpenDrop is the first real experiment of a new way of doing research and business, together with a constantly growing, loosely coupled and horizontally managed team of value driven innovators? This is a tale from the future where in the development of OpenDrop (OD) we have deployed an innovative governance and operations management system which is meant to be adaptive, dynamic and anti-fragile. Where we have successfully layed the foundations for our governance in the principles of commons-based peer production and liquid management allowing anyone to contribute, and for this contribution to be accounted.
About the speaker:
Eugenio studied molecular and system biotechnology with a specialization in integrative neuroscience. He experiment in the field of Life Sciences with emerging and low-cost technologies, solving global issues and exploring novel forms of ethical deliberation. He led the development and management of several projects acquiring the tools to deal with an increasingly complex and multidisciplinary environment. His mission is to build and nurture a collaborative society by connecting people, organisations and ideas around fairness, openness and trust. March 27, 2014 presentation sponsored by the Science and Technology Studies Program, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and the School of Journalism at the University of British Columbia.
In this presentation, I review three distinct groups of prominent public intellectuals arguing for action on climate change. I discuss how these individuals establish and maintain their authority, how their ideas and arguments spread and diffuse by way of the media, and how they shape the assumptions of global networks of activists, philanthropists, journalists, and academics. Then, for each group, drawing on their main works, I describe how they define the social implications of climate change and the barriers to addressing the problem, their vision of a future society and their favored policy actions, their outlook on nature and technology, and their views on politics and social change. In the conclusion, I discuss the need for investment in media and public forums that strengthen our civic capacity to learn, debate, and collaborate in ways that take advantage of different discourses, ideas and voices.

families of their employees (all nationalities): education, safety, legal defense, health. The concept of Corporate Social Responsibility is becoming less and less abstract, through a growing process of effective action. This phase has already begun.
In the second phase are formed agglomerations of Corporates (including partnership), the fight goes toward competitive levels for the practice of CSR, which is increasingly becoming a competitive factor , and above all is the ability to "spoil" the talents and ensure maximum safety to families of employees who become distinctive competence in the management of human resources. In this phase, the robot began to be produced in large scale.
The third stage coincides with the maturity of the next industrial revolution (energy + biotechnology +
obotics+ nanotechnology), where the effects on social relations will be huge, given the plethora of "normal" uman beings (and poor) which will determine. At this stage all Senior classes of the world's population will be little cyborg, and the others will be a problem to manage. From whom?

“This model is based on so-called "end-of-pipe" measures, i.e. we will try to regulate outputs, and
therefore greenhouse gas emissions. International negotiations will therefore mainly concern the
distribution of the global effort to reduce emissions. On the other hand, we will not tackle the
question of inputs, i.e. the processes that determine the evolution of emissions, such as energy
production, industrial development models or the functioning of the world economy. Thirdly, this
approach has also fostered the isolation of climate governance on the international scene, by separating
it from a whole range of other international arenas and regimes. While the functioning of global energy
markets has been identified as one of the "root causes" of the problem, the regulation of these markets
is not one of the topics discussed in climate negotiations (Victor, 2011, 19). Other crucial issues are
absent from these talks: the regulation of world trade is dealt with within the World Trade Organization
or in bilateral negotiations; and the regulation of financial markets is negotiated in confidential arenas
such as the Basel Committee on Banking Supervision. These arenas do not take the climate issue into
account at all. And vice versa, climate institutions have little or no interest in trade or finance issues.
Quite the contrary, since "firewalls" have been established to prevent these regimes from interfering, as
noted by politician Elmar Altvater (2007, 37). By excluding these issues from climate governance,
important levers for influencing the emissions trajectory have been deprived.”

15. • But technology =/= technologies: one can oppose zombie
technologies (including smart cities) and yet refuse to embrace
a technophobic position.
Technodiversity matters.
• The technical system is thought to be disrupting the social,
economical, legal, etc. systems. As if it was always in advance.
But this time, it’s not in advance but rather out of sync with
the current situation.
IoT dates back from the 80s, smart cities appeared in 2005,
etc. and we know these perspectives do not fit well with the
Anthropocene/impending collapse/ecological
meltdown/looming extinction, etc.

19. Smart cities as “negative commons”
“Negative commons refers to “resources”, material or immaterial, “negative” such as waste,
nuclear power plants, polluted soil or certain cultural legacies (the right of a colonizer, etc.). The
challenge is to take care of them collectively (commoning) if we cannot wipe out these realities. It
is therefore an extension of the classical theory of commons, particularly in relation to the
“positive” approach of the Commons Pool Resources proposed by Elinor Ostrom, sometimes
described as bucolic by Alexandre Monnin. The negative commons approach revolves around two
major axes a) giving a negative value to realities that are often considered positive - fossil energy
reserves, digital technologies, etc. - and b) giving a negative value to realities that are often
considered to be positive. b) the fact of building new institutions likely to allow collectives to
democratically reappropriate subjects that have escaped them until now, in particular co-existence
with negative commons, more or less at a distance (one can think of the recent measures taken by
mayors on the subject of pesticides, but also of the digital tomorrow, based on the same model).”
