This document discusses Joseph's journey from being sold into slavery by his brothers to becoming the second in command of Egypt. It describes Joseph's dreams that predicted his future leadership, his brothers' jealousy that led them to throw him in a pit, and how he was then sold as a slave. Even as a slave, God was with Joseph and he rose to a position of power in Potiphar's household. However, he was falsely accused and imprisoned. While in prison, he correctly interpreted dreams, though the cupbearer forgot about him. Years later, Pharaoh had dreams that only Joseph could interpret, leading to Joseph being appointed to a high role in Egypt.

Genesis 37:1-4; 12-28 reminds us: there will be trouble in this world, even amongst family;
Matthew 14: 22-33 reminds us that Jesus calls us into the storms of the world, but also assures us that even in the midst of the storms of life, we can 'walk on water' when we heed his call, and when we get distracted and start to sink, we can call out to him, and he is there to hold our hands.
What does “Islam” mean?
The word الإسلام [Islam] is an infinitive word derived from س ل م [silm] root in if‘al pattern and used as noun and infinitive. The word silm means “release/keeping away; and to be distant from fear, doubt, trouble, lack of peace, unhappiness, fight, war, pain, suffering, material and spiritual inconveniences, weakness and decaying, and all the negativities.” This word is also the root of salim, selam, teslim, Islam etc. The word’s “Islam” form means “strengthening” [removal from problems, worries, fear, unhappiness, fights, wars, and similar negative things]. Hence, the religion Islam means the “the religion that strengthens humans [entire range of principles that protects and secures people by putting a distance between them and problems, worries, war, weakness, spiritual illness, unhappiness, and similar things].”
In this sermon we explore the life of Joseph who was enrolled in God's Faith Hall of Fame because of the faith that he demonstrated in the special instructions he gave concerning his bones. What he did created a powerful testimony of hope.

Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.

4. Two types of trials/testing of faith:
How do we handle times of
suffering in the valley?
How do we handle mountain top experiences
where our lives are blessed by God?
5. Now Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told it to his
brothers, and they hated him even more.
He said to them, “Please listen to the details of this
dream which I have dreamed; we brothers were
binding sheaves of grain stalks in the field, and lo,
my sheaf suddenly got up and stood upright and
remained standing; and behold, your sheaves stood
all around my sheaf and bowed down in respect.”
6. His brothers said to him, “Are you actually going to
reign over us? Are you really going to rule and
govern us as your subjects?”
So they hated him even more for telling them about
his dreams and for his arrogant words.
But Joseph dreamed still another dream, and told it
to his brothers as well.
7. He said, “See here, I have again dreamed a dream,
and lo, this time I saw eleven stars and the sun and
the moon bowed down in respect to me!”
He told it to his father as well as to his brothers;
but his father rebuked him and said to him in
disbelief, “What is the meaning of this dream that
you have dreamed? Shall I and your mother and
your brothers actually come to bow down to the
ground in respect before you?
8. Joseph’s brothers were envious and jealous of him,
but his father kept the words of Joseph in mind,
wondering about their meaning.
- Genesis 37:5-11 AMP
9. When they saw him from a distance and before he
came close to them, they plotted against him to
put him to death.
They said to one another, “Here comes this
dreamer! Now, then, come and let us kill him and
throw him into one of the pits; and we will say, ‘a
wild beast devoured him.’ Then let us see what
will become of his dreams!”
10. But Reuben heard this and rescued him out of their
hands and said, “Let us not take his life.” Reuben
further said to them, “Shed no blood. Throw him
into this pit that is in the wilderness, but do not
lay hands on him” – that he might rescue him out
of their hands, to restore him to his father.
So it came about, when Joseph reached his
brothers, that they stripped Joseph of his tunic, the
varicolored tunic that was on him; and they took
him and threw him into the pit.
11. Now the pit was empty, without any water in it.
Then they sat down to eat a meal. And as they
raised their eyes and looked, behold, a caravan of
Ishmaelites was coming from Gilead, with their
camels bearing aromatic gum and balm and myrrh,
on their way to bring them down to Egypt.
Judah said to his brothers, “What profit is it for us
to kill our brother and cover up his blood? Come
and let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and not lay
our hands on him, for he is our brother, our own
flesh.”
12. And his brothers listened to him. Then some
Midianite traders passed by, so they pulled him up
and lifted Joseph out of the pit, and sold him to the
Ishmaelites for twenty shekels of silver.
Thus they brought Joseph into Egypt.
- Genesis 37:18-28 NASB
13. Now Joseph had been taken down to Egypt; and
Potiphar, an Egyptian officer of Pharaoh, the
captain of the bodyguard, brought him from the
Ishmaelites, who had taken him down there.
The LORD was with Joseph, so he became a
successful man.
And he was in the house of his master, the
Egyptian.
14. Now his master saw that the LORD was with him
and how the LORD caused all that he did to
prosper in his hand. So Joseph found favor in his
sight and became his personal servant; and he
made him overseer over his house, and all that he
owned he put in his charge.
It came about that from the time he made him
overseer in his house and over all that he owned,
the LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house on account
of Joseph; thus the LORD’S blessing was upon all
that he owned, in the house and in the field.
15. So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge;
and with him there he did not concern himself
with anything except the food which he ate. Now
Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
- Genesis 39:1-6 NASB
16. It came about after these events that his master’s
wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said,
“Lie with me.” But he refused and said to his
master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master
does not concern himself with anything in the
house, and he has put all that he owns in my
charge. There is no one greater in this house than
I, and he has withheld nothing from me except
you, because you are his wife.
How then could I do this great evil and sin against
God?”
17. As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not
listen to her to lie beside her or be with her. Now
it happened one day that he went into the house to
do his work, and none of the men of the household
was there inside. She caught him by his garment,
saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in
her hand and fled, and went outside.
When she saw that he had left his garment in her
hand and had fled outside, she called to the men of
her household and said to them,
18. “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make
sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I
screamed. When he heard that I raised my voice
and screamed, he left his garment beside me and
fled and went outside.”
So she left his garment beside her until his master
came home. Then she spoke to him with these
words, “The Hebrew slave, whom you brought to
us, came in to me to make sport of me; and as I
raised my voice and screamed, he left his garment
beside me and fled outside.”
- Genesis 39:7-18 NASB
19. But the LORD was with Joseph and extended
kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of
the chief jailer. The chief jailer committed to
Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the
jail; so that whatever was done there, he was
responsible for it.
The chief jailer did not supervise anything under
Joseph’s charge because the LORD was with him;
and whatever he did, the LORD made to prosper.
- Genesis 39:21-23 NASB
20. Then Joseph said to him, “This is the
interpretation of it: the three branches represent
three days; within three more days Pharaoh will
lift up your head (present you in public) and
restore you to your position; and you will again
put Pharaoh’s cup into his hand just as you did
when you were his cupbearer.
“Only think of me when it goes well with you, and
please show me kindness by mentioning me to
Pharaoh and get me out of this house.”
21. Yet even after all that, the chief cupbearer did not
remember Joseph, but forgot all about him.
- Genesis 40:12-14, 23 AMP
22. Now is happened at the end of two full years that
Pharaoh dreamed that he was standing by the Nile.
- Genesis 41:1 AMP
23. So Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Since God has
informed you of all this, there is no one so
discerning and wise as you are. You shall be over
my house, and according to your command all my
people shall do homage; only in the throne I will be
greater than you.”
Pharaoh said to Joseph, “See, I have set you over all
the land of Egypt.”
24. Then Pharaoh took off his signet ring from his
hand and put it on Joseph’s hand, and clothed him
in garments of fine linen and put the gold necklace
around his neck. He had him ride in his second
chariot; and they proclaimed before him, “Bow the
knee!” And he set him over all the land of Egypt.
Moreover, Pharaoh said to Joseph, “Though I am
Pharaoh, yet without your permission no one shall
raise his hand or foot in all the land of Egypt.”
- Genesis 41:39-44 NASB
