Whole energy system transition implies both complex processes of socio-technical change and complex sets of public values. Making sense of what may happen (the future ‘possibility space’) and what is at stake (the ‘issue space’) are social tasks to which, as science and technology studies (STS) scholars have argued, future imaginaries contribute resources. Such imaginaries provide symbolic templates (Mordini 2007) for understanding possible futures. Often such imaginaries have been associated with single technologies. STS has mapped numerous examples in relation to energy, such as nuclear and all-electric futures. The complexity of a coming renewables-based transition, however, mobilises imaginaries that include within them multiple energy vectors, the governance of the energy system, and the role of publics and other stakeholders. To explore these whole-system imaginaries, we report on interviews undertaken with academic engineering experts and others involved in demonstrator project delivery working on the ERDF-funded Flexis project in South Wales, UK (http://flexis.wales). Despite there being much shared common ground, in the shape of a whole systems imaginary of decentralisation, this brings with it a complex space of possibilities within which different socio-technical constellations can be imagined. These constellations have characteristics with very different implications for energy research and energy policy.

I delivered this shorter version of my Gov. Transformation Through Public Data presentation at the Personal Democracy Forum 2008 in June.
(watch in full screen mode to read the narration). While this version concentrates on government, IMHO the same tools are valid for corporations, with similar benefits, as part of an Enterprise 2.0 strategy.
In collaboration with the Province of Brescia, Italy, we aim to redesign the relationship between four elements: information, the urban space, people and institutions. First, we will innovatively imagine new forms of communication and services to foster learning, knowledge and social inclusion. In particular, we will investigate the use of new media and communication technologies to promote social sustainability and cultural enrichment for location-based communities. Second, we will explore innovative designs for embedding electronics into the urban fabric, as well as into the public transportation system, so that they may promote ubiquitous accessibility to information, culture and knowledge. The ultimate goal of the project is to imagine how new media and mobile technologies can increase the younger population's awareness of environmental problems, foster learning and civic engagement.

"Communities are built on connections. Better connections usually
provide better opportunities. But, what are better connections, and how do
they lead to more effective and productive communities? How do we build
connected communities that create, and take advantage of, opportunities
in their region or marketplace? How does success emerge from the
complex interactions within communities?
This paper investigates building sustainable communities through improving
their connectivity – internally and externally – using network ties to create economic opportunities. Improved connectivity is created through an iterative process of knowing the network and knitting the network.
A presentation I did about social production, open source and new models applied to government contexts. The specific community i used as an example was drupal.
In order for the internet to play a greater role as an instrument for social and personal empowerment, we need to understand what the everyday life of an individual belonging to a minority or marginalized community encompasses. Such an approach calls for closer examination of the practices, system of relations and context of particular minority and marginalized users in order to figure out what is meaningful to them and how they use (or do not use) different forms of the internet for meeting their objectives. There is a need to acknowledge the multiple conceptualizations and forms of internet use as disadvantaged users apply these differently for meeting specific agendas.
This article presented three projects working with minority and marginalized users. In the context of future research on internet use, three broad sets of variables are closely connected and require careful attention:
• The type of marginalized group;
• The goals, expectations and identification of what particular marginalized users consider to be meaningful in their everyday life; and
• The selected method of research.
