API's are at the heart of the modern software development world, we do it everywhere! It's not only a matter of distributed systems, it's in every code that we write, and more often than not - it matters.
The focus of this talk is about authoring Public API's between systems, be that different parts within the same distributed system or a fully blown real-world public API and everything in between.
Facing such a challenge, one may meet all sorts of dilemmas and consider different strategies and several practices. For instance, how to author specifications, how to approach stability, how to authenticate calls, what practices to consider, and more.
Join me in this session as we tackle such questions head-on and see cool demos of code and tools as we build a public API in the process.

WinOps Conf 2016 - Matteo Emili - Development and QA Dilemmas in DevOpsWinOps Conf
The quick rise of Continuous Delivery in the enterprise means that common problems are often approached the other way round. Concepts like Feature Flags and Testing In Production caused several headaches to developers and QA engineers, especially where they have a wealth of experience about traditional development.
There are some challenges and approaches which are very common, and they still scare newcomers. Let's have a look at a few of these, with the most common solutions.
Asynchronous Services – A promising future for OSGi - T Wardmfrancis
OSGi Community Event 2014
Abstract:
Asynchronous and event-driven programming models are known to offer exceptional performance in large-scale parallel workloads, and are experiencing significant growth in the Java ecosystem. Other JVM languages are also exploring the benefits of high-throughput asynchronous systems; the Actor pattern is commonly used to help design and build these systems. At its heart the Actor pattern is all about composing systems from modular components – exactly the same thing that OSGi is designed for. In the imminent OSGi Enterprise R6 release OSGi will be adding some new APIs that allow bundles to communicate asynchronously, even when using existing synchronous services.
This talk will describe the workings of the new Promises and Asynchronous Services APIs from the OSGi Enterprise and Compendium specifications, showing you how you can start to take advantage of asynchronous programming techniques using modular, loosely-coupled services. It will also demonstrate how OSGi Remote Services can transparently integrate within the asynchronous application, allowing completely non-blocking interactions in distributed environments.

API Design in the Modern Era - Architecture Next 2020Eran Stiller
APIs are at the heart of the modern software development world. Whether we author a distributed system, a microservices-based application, or a simple client-server n-tier application - our system will most probably expose an API at its core. APIs are a means to expose the functionality of a particular component to its users. Unsurprisingly, many formats for APIs have existed over the years, with the industry setting around RESTful APIs as the de-facto standard, with gRPC growing in popularity.
Join me in this session, as I review today's most popular API formats and their relative strengths and weaknesses. From REST, through OpenAPI, via gRPC and to the rising star of AsyncAPI - we'll explain how these API formats work and the tools they employ and offer some guidance as towards when we should use each. At the end of this session, you'll have a good familiarity with these formats, and you'll be in a much better position to choose between them.
The fall of the BizTalk Architect – From something abstract to something usefulBizTalk360
BizTalk Architects have always taken themselves a bit too seriously and have been able to dictate rules for integration based on things that is important to no one but them.
Only the BizTalk architect really care about port names and making the BizTalk environment look pretty. We are at a time in history were “integration is hard” is becoming less and less of an excuse for such behavior. Both technology and people have become smarter and integration has shifted to a more function based focus. Make it work is more important than make is pretty and reusable.
I will be presenting a solution to all these problems.
Our customers want a stable, performant application that delivers new features every week, and we discovered that leveraging the AWS Fargate service fits our customers' needs better. How to Build Front-End Web Apps that Scale - FutureJSPhil Leggetter
Developing large apps is difficult. Ensuring that code is consistent, well structured, tested, maintainable and has an architecture that encourages enhancement is essential. When it comes to large server-focused apps, solutions to this problem have been tried and tested. But, with the ongoing dramatic shift of functionality into the browser, how do you achieve this when building Front-End Web Apps?
In this talk we’ll cover the signs to watch out for as your HTML5 SPA grows and provide examples of some of the tooling types that can contribute-to - as well as ease - the growing pains. Finally, we’ll demonstrate how tooling can be used to support a set of conventions, practices and principles that enable a productive developer workflow where the first line of code is feature code, features can be developed in isolation, code conflicts are avoided by grouping assets by feature and features are composed into apps.
The demonstrations will use the BladeRunnerJS open source developer toolkit, but the concepts are widely applicable.

SpringOne 2021
Session Title: Transporting Data at Warp Speed: How to Connect Spring Boot Apps Quickly, Powerfully, and Painlessly
Speaker: Mark Heckler, Cloud Advocate, Java/JVM Languages at Microsoft
Securing service to service communication was never easy. Can we build a system that enforce good practices like least privilege and secure by default without affecting devlopement velocity? Apparently yes - and in this talk I’ll share how!
Micro-services are social beings: they can’t function without talking with other services. Every microservice has its own domain, and it usually relies on other micro-services to function properly. But this also raises an interesting question: do we trust all of our micro-services?
The truth is that not all micro-services are the same: some micro-services are more sensitive - for example, services that handle user data. Others are user-facing and therefore riskier. We cannot treat all services as equal. We need a good and robust mechanism to describe who can talk with who.
At Soluto, we are dealing with this challenge for a while. In this talk, I’ll share the journey we went through until we found a solution we’re happy with: a simple and declarative system that allows services to define who can access them. Any dev can request access to any service, and the service owner can review it. In talk, I’ll share how we build this solution, using open source tools like Open Policy Agent, so you can easily build something similar.

Do you feel like you are doing your job with one hand tied behind your back? Are you frustrated by company practices that are horribly antiquated and inappropriate for the digital world? Does your boss or client fail to understand the unique characteristics of the web? If so, you are not alone. The majority of traditional businesses are struggling to adapt to the digital economy and need your help even if they don't realize it. In his talk Paul explains why this is, and what we (as the web community) can do about it. He highlights that to build a great website we have to be the catalyst for organizational change and recommends ways to get started.

Businesses around the world are reinventing themselves to remain competitive in a time when agility, efficiency and constant change is the new normal.
Strategic, thoughtful evolution is required to meet these changes head on. The most successful companies are doing so with a critical eye on three factors:
• Customers are more connected than ever, demanding more customized experience, on-demand scale, ubiquitous access and business analytics. Keeping customers at the center of every decision is critical.
• Competitive landscape has become more dynamic. Biggest is no guarantee of being the best. Foresight, innovating thinking and ability to quickly respond to customer’s need are what create new market leaders.
• Organizational structures and models have evolved. Businesses that foster innovation and collaboration require new ways of thinking and operating to create efficiencies and increase the power of their human capital.
In this book, we provide an overview of the Platform as a Service (PaaS) model of cloud services, describing its value, components and its place in an overall cloud adoption and migration strategy. Then we showcase seven of the largest and most powerful PaaS companies and their public and private PaaS offerings. We examine the services offered by these platforms and provide a comparison chart and decision checklists to facilitate selecting the most appropriate platform for transforming your organization to increase efficiencies and power of innovation.

A Multi-Company Perspective: Enterprise Cloud and PaaSThoughtworks
Tech communities are always abuzz with the potential of Platform as a Service (PaaS). The promised ability to slash delivery times, allowing teams to iterate and release new features faster, has a growing number of organisations looking to implement PaaS in 2016.
In this presentation, industry leaders provide insights from the trenches by letting us enter the world of Cloud applications automation and PaaS. We also get a glimpse into why and how PaaS is widely adopted, as well as appreciate its constructs and challenges.
Further more, you can learn how build your delivery platform around AWS services, CloudFoundry or OpenShift and reflect on how best to create internal cloud and PaaS capabilities to change the way your organisation delivers software.
DevOps is not enough - Embedding DevOps in a broader contextUwe Friedrichsen
As the subtitle says, this talk tries to embed DevOps in a broader context. Therefore first briefly is sketched, how the state of IT is perceived by many people in IT. Additionally, DevOps is briefly defined by explaining the three ways as they were described in the book "The Phoenix Project".
After this short introduction the claim of the title is picked up: "Why is DevOps not enough?". In order to explain this claim, the history of economic markets and of IT are briefly explained. The bottomline is that almost all markets supported by IT have drastically changed in the years since IT became relevant for companies. Additionally, IT itself has changed dramatically in this period of time. Therefore, most of the common knowledge and best practices, we stick to in IT became counter-productive meanwhile because they solve a completely different problem, i.e., the problems of the times when the markets and IT itself were totally different.
The conclusion from the short examination of history is that we basically have to re-think IT as a whole, which is discussed briefly in the next section of the talk. This section first has a look at the new drivers that inflict change on IT. Then it derives the new goals of IT and shows some of the building blocks.
Having this new idea of IT at hand, the role of DevOps in it is finally considered. Starting with DevOps and its continuous pursuit of shortening cycle times in order to optimize outcome, DevOps can be used to drive the change of IT. This is exemplarily shown by starting with DevOps and then see, which question arise from that and what solutions it leads to. In the end of the example, many of the building blocks of the new IT are in place - just by starting with DevOps and continuously improving.
This is a very dense talk covering a lot of ground in order to lead to the final observation that DevOps can (and should) be used to drive the required change of IT and many detail have been left out. Kieron Sambrook-Smith, Chief Commercial Officer at Platform.sh spoke at eZ Conference 2017 in London about the business value of Platform as a Service (PaaS) Automation.
He covers the many aspects of the advantages of using a PaaS. The business value you can expect to reap will range from hosting cost savings, better workflow and team productivity, new project delivery concepts, and greater competitive advantage. Discover a more advanced implementation of your service offering.
DevOps is a journey towards a new way of developing and managing the lifecycle of software applications. It first requires a mindset shift, followed by technology and process shifts. In other words, the only absolute truth is that you can’t overhaul your platforms and solutions without changing your culture and thinking.
AWS re:Invent 2016: Lift and Evolve – Saving Money in the Cloud is Easy, Maki...Amazon Web Services
Every enterprise knows by now that it can save money by simply lifting and shifting workloads to the cloud, but many are missing the larger opportunity to also make money by moving. While quick costs savings are good for the bottom line, they do little to move the top line numbers. To achieve both savings and earnings, corporate thinking about technologies must change in order to enable faster processes leveraged enterprise-wide. In this session we will explore multiple customer success stories where the customers have evolved from leveraging basic compute and storage products (EC2 and S3) to integrating new services into operations by leveraging Lambda, DynamoDB, CodeDeploy, etc. Once this is achieved, enterprises are enabled to manage and deploy code rapidly in a programmatic and elastic secure network, ensuring governance and security standards across the globe. We will look at the migration process trusted by hundreds of clients as well as how to cope with the process and people components that are so important to enable agility, while focusing heavily on the technology. The Coca-Cola Company (TCCC) and 2nd Watch story will dive deep into the technology that allows TCCC to manage hundreds of AWS Accounts, hundreds of workloads, thousands of instances, and hundreds of business partners around the globe. TCCC’s Configuration Management System has Puppet at the core and relies on over a dozen core and emerging AWS products across accounts, availability zones and regions. This complex and globally-available system ensures all of TCCC’s workloads in AWS meet corporate policies but also allows for rapid scale of both consumer and enterprise workloads. Session sponsored by 2nd Watch.

Symfony has a wide user base today. Most who work with Symfony on a daily basis have configured their own services, are fluent in configuring routing and validators. But what is actually going on under the hood? What happens when the configuration is parsed? What is a cache warmup? What happens to a request before hitting your controller? How does the HttpKernel work? Andreas will help us gain insight into the inner workings of the Symfony framework. If you have used
Symfony, but have never built a compiler pass, a cache warmer, or are wondering how exactly the container is built, this talk is for you.
We will hear eZ's CEO Morten Ingebrigtsen, along with eZ's Chief Product Officer Roland Benedetti, and eZ's Chief Commercial Officer Bertrand Maugain, share updates on where eZ stands today and where it's headed tomorrow. Improving profitability for small businessBen Wann
In this comprehensive presentation, we will explore strategies and practical tips for enhancing profitability in small businesses. Tailored to meet the unique challenges faced by small enterprises, this session covers various aspects that directly impact the bottom line. Attendees will learn how to optimize operational efficiency, manage expenses, and increase revenue through innovative marketing and customer engagement techniques.
Implicitly or explicitly all competing businesses employ a strategy to select a mix
of marketing resources. Formulating such competitive strategies fundamentally
involves recognizing relationships between elements of the marketing mix (e.g.,
price and product quality), as well as assessing competitive and market conditions
(i.e., industry structure in the language of economics).
Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

13. “I’d say overall developer productivity has improved about 20%”
“We’re now saving the time and effort of 4-5 full-time technical staff (£300,000 p.a.) to do what the
developer can do now at the touch of a button.”
“Code review, functional approval and UAT between the 10 strong distributed team, design agency
and management improved dramatically overnight”
“The entire UAT problem has gone away now, I’d say the whole process is about 7 times faster.”
“We issue 80% fewer tickets than we used to, and most of those are knowledge sharing opposed to
issues.”
“Our deployment cycle used to be twice a month, and only during low traffic. We now release daily,
whatever the site is doing!”
“Coding accuracy and design velocity improved by over 20%. Downtime has been virtually
eliminated…..”
What customers say
Reiss, TES Global, Studio Aqua
15. These days IT is present in nearly everything we deliver as a business, so all the processes that exist
between the developer and the live system - development to operations, or DevOps - are significant
to the customer experience. So it stands to reason that better DevOps can impact the live service in
many different ways, and much of this can be turned to competitive advantage.
“DevOps are defined as a set of principles and process management practices that aim to
make software building, testing & release management fast and reliable”
Operations value
Automating the entire DevOps process block…..
Development Operations Live Service
18. “Perfect consistency between environments allows us to deploy to live at any-time without worrying
about errors, I don’t think we’ve ever had an issue with the production service.”
“We don’t need DevOps anymore, nor do we have to wait hours or days for the vendor to respond to
our tickets”
“Tickets in QA have disappeared”
“We no longer pay for massive permanent resource allocations to meet unknown future peak traffic,
because we know we can rely on a robust stack which scales seamlessly in minutes when needed.”
“Platform.sh scaled us up and performance was great right through the peak 5,000 concurrent
users.”
“We upsized to a PE96 during the summer sale and performance was phenomenal. The old
architecture needed way more hardware during this period and it still used to fall over”
What customers say
British Council, Canadian Football League (CFL), Reiss
20. 1. Deployment confidence & speed allow you to think differently about your service offering
2. No more change freeze during peak periods
3. React to real-time analytics to optimize revenue
