What Are The Causes Of The Black
Death?
Middle Ages Causes
 The movements of the planets
 A punishment from God
 Bad smells and corrupt air
 Enemies who had poisoned the
wells
Modern Causes
However we know that rats
causes the disease. Most historians
believe that the Black Death was
caused by strains of the bubonic
plague. The plague lived in fleas
which lived on black rats. They gave
the disease to the rats. When the rats
died, the fleas hopped off onto
humans.
How Did The Black Death Spread
Around Europe?
 Tradesmen carried the infected rats with them on journeys.
 It spread through dirty towns as the doctors were powerless as they
didn't know what was causing it and how to cure it.
 Countries invaded others bringing the plague back with them
What Was The Impact In United
Kingdom?
 People fell in deep despair
 People were angry and blamed the church
 Poor people started to gain money through inheritance and
became richer.
 There were not enough people to work and harvest or do normal
jobs
 Parliament stopped the wages rising, and the poor became angry
Impact On The Rest Of Europe?
 Faith had disappeared as they believed the Church and that God
was punishing them.
 Poor people became richer
 Lower population
 People started different religions
Extra Questions:
1) It started in India and spread to England and began at South
Hampton where it spread across the coast. It reached Bristol and
everyone in the town died. The disease was brought by sailors.
2) a.Source b says it came from India straight to England . Whereas,
source d doesn’t even state about India, he said that it just came from
France.
b. This might of happened as they didn’t really know anything about
the east and only knew what they had been told.
3) The plahue spread quickly because the towns were so un-hygienic
and dirty. As it was dirty, rats came quickly and fleas started carrying
the diseases to rats.
4) a. No because scientists have no found the answer to why the
Plague started, which was rats.
b. Because they were desperately trying to find the cause of the
disease, they tried everything and nothing worked.
