The majority of entrepreneurs are highly motivated people. They have ideas and they work
hard to turn those ideas into reality. What happens when an entrepreneur loses their
motivation though? Without motivation, many entrepreneurs will struggle to get their

In her TED Talk, Elizabeth Gilbert discusses the idea that both failure and great success are
often viewed as the same in our minds, and this can lead us to a feeling of discomfort.

This will allow them to avoid getting lost in the endless loop of success and failure.
According to Gilbert, finding the thing that you love is the most important thing that you
can do to get back on track.
The Single Biggest Reason Why Start-Ups Succeed – Bill Gross
Bill Gross founded Idealab, a startup incubator that has helped numerous companies get
off the ground. According to Gross, the most important factor that a startup has to
consider when it comes to succeeding is timing. He claims that this factor has a 42%
difference between failure and success in the startups that Idealab helped launch. In his
talk, Gross discusses how in 1999, Idealab supported a startup called Z.com, which was a
video streaming service. At the time, it was a great idea, but it was still hard to watch
videos online. In 2003, Z.com went out of business, and in 2005, YouTube was born.
YouTube was created due to the availability of video software such as Adobe Flash. This is
just one great example Gross uses to discuss how integral timing is to a startup.
Why The Best Hire Might Not Have The Perfect Resume – Regina
Hartley
According to Regina Hartley, a human resource expert, a candidate’s resume doesn’t
necessarily mean that they are the ideal candidate for the job. Hartley uses Steve Jobs as
an example, and how he struggled with dyslexia, never finished college, job hopped plenty
of times, and so much more. Regardless of what was on his resume, he went on to
become the head of Apple, one of the biggest tech companies in the world. In her talk,
Hartley discusses her research and experience comparing the “silver spoon candidate”
versus the “scrapper”, and how things like post-traumatic growth can push the scrapper to
do better work. Regardless of what’s on someone’s resume, by giving them the
opportunity they may be able to surprise you due to their passion.
