Why is “Waterless” so Important?
What is good about water in a coolant?
Water has been the choice for cooling engines for over
100 years for very good reasons:
‣Water is cheap.
‣Water is available.
‣Water has superior thermal conductivity
— in its liquid state.
What is Bad about Water in a Coolant?
‣ The low boiling point of water (212°F to 220°F) becomes
the failure temperature of traditional cooling systems.
‣ Water is corrosive.
‣ Water retains just 4% of it’s thermal conductivity when it
changes to vapor.
The energy that it takes to maintain coolant
temperatures below the boiling point of water is a huge
waste of fuel.

Evans Waterless Coolants
Our Maiden Truck Conversion
Still Going Strong!!
1. An Evans prototype coolant (predecessor of HDC) was installed into this truck
when it was new (1990).
2. In 2012 the truck is still in daily use. For its entire history, it has had 215°F
thermostats and a 230°F fan switch.
3. The truck is going strong with nearly 1,000,000 miles. Joe reports getting better
than 7 mpg consistently during the entire period.
4. Head, cylinder liners, pistons and valves are original.
5. Joe takes satisfaction in driving past trucks that have triggered derating or shut-
down at 225°F while his fan doesn’t even turn on until 230°F.
Rotax requires Evans waterless
coolants for its small aircraft engines.
Previously, Rotax had a problem with take-offs in high
ambient temperature regions. (The coolant would boil
over before reaching cooler temperatures aloft.) The
engines are used in small aircraft including the
Predator uav.
Evans Waterless Coolant reversed Ferrari’s 16-
year Formula One Slump
From 1983 to 1998 Ferrari never won the Constructors F-1 World
Championship. In 1998, Maurizio Bollini, manager of engine cooling
for Ferrari F-1 sought the guidance of Jack Evans, who taught him
how to use waterless coolants to increase the endurance of Ferrari’s
race engines. Ferrari, beginning with the following year, won six
Constructors Champion-ships in a row.
Reserve capacity at 16,000 ft.
Qiang Xu, Evans’ agent in China, heard about construction
problems with a new railroad project high in the Kunlun Mountains.
At the elevation of 16,000 ft. the trucks could not carry full loads and
required periodic shut-downs for cooling off. Xu converted a truck
with Evans Coolant that had not been able to perform well at the
high altitude. Afterward there was no boil-over despite full loads
and no cool-off down-times.
Reserve Capacity made the generators in
Iraq reliable when it was 140oF on the
tarmac.
The First Sergeant at the Balad Airbase near Baghdad requested
help from Evans to keep the electricity running. His generators
would automatically shut down at 225oF. They would not restart
without a 20 minute cool-down. An Evans coolant was installed and
the 225oF shut-down thermostats were replaced with 250’s. The
problems stopped – the electricity became reliable. Oil analysis
showed no issues.

  • 12. Why is “Waterless” so Important? What is good about water in a coolant? Water has been the choice for cooling engines for over 100 years for very good reasons: ‣Water is cheap. ‣Water is available. ‣Water has superior thermal conductivity — in its liquid state.

What is Bad about Water in a Coolant? ‣ The low boiling point of water (212°F to 220°F) becomes the failure temperature of traditional cooling systems. ‣ Water is corrosive. ‣ Water retains just 4% of it’s thermal conductivity when it changes to vapor.   • 18. Our Maiden Truck Conversion Still Going Strong!! 1. An Evans prototype coolant (predecessor of HDC) was installed into this truck when it was new (1990). 2. In 2012 the truck is still in daily use. For its entire history, it has had 215°F thermostats and a 230°F fan switch. 3. The truck is going strong with nearly 1,000,000 miles. Joe reports getting better than 7 mpg consistently during the entire period. 4. Head, cylinder liners, pistons and valves are original. 5. Joe takes satisfaction in driving past trucks that have triggered derating or shut- down at 225°F while his fan doesn’t even turn on until 230°F.
  • 19. Rotax requires Evans waterless coolants for its small aircraft engines. Previously, Rotax had a problem with take-offs in high ambient temperature regions. (The coolant would boil over before reaching cooler temperatures aloft.) The engines are used in small aircraft including the Predator uav.
  • 20. Evans Waterless Coolant reversed Ferrari’s 16- year Formula One Slump From 1983 to 1998 Ferrari never won the Constructors F-1 World Championship. In 1998, Maurizio Bollini, manager of engine cooling for Ferrari F-1 sought the guidance of Jack Evans, who taught him how to use waterless coolants to increase the endurance of Ferrari’s race engines. Ferrari, beginning with the following year, won six Constructors Champion-ships in a row.
  • 21. Reserve capacity at 16,000 ft. Qiang Xu, Evans’ agent in China, heard about construction problems with a new railroad project high in the Kunlun Mountains. At the elevation of 16,000 ft. the trucks could not carry full loads and required periodic shut-downs for cooling off. Xu converted a truck with Evans Coolant that had not been able to perform well at the high altitude. Afterward there was no boil-over despite full loads and no cool-off down-times.
  • 22. Reserve Capacity made the generators in Iraq reliable when it was 140oF on the tarmac. The First Sergeant at the Balad Airbase near Baghdad requested help from Evans to keep the electricity running. His generators would automatically shut down at 225oF. They would not restart without a 20 minute cool-down. An Evans coolant was installed and the 225oF shut-down thermostats were replaced with 250’s. The problems stopped – the electricity became reliable. Oil analysis showed no issues.
