The Aztecs lived in the highlands of Mexico and were governed by a king. They were mostly farmers who grew crops like corn, tomatoes, and cacao to make chocolate. They also had skilled artisans and potters. The Aztecs worshipped many gods and built large temples where they performed human sacrifices to appease the gods. Their empire was large, controlling many other peoples, and may have had a population as high as 20 million inhabitants.
