5. 2. AXP (Architectural Experience Program)
Administered by NCARB. Documented experience in six
areas of architectural practice, under the direct
supervision of a Registered Architect.
7. 1. Practice Management - 160 hours
Practice Management focuses on running an
architecture firm. Under this area, you’ll gain
experience managing a business, marketing your firm,
securing projects, working with clients, and sustaining
a positive and professional work environment.
8. 2. Project Management - 360 hours
Project Management focuses on delivering projects
that meet your contractual requirements, so you’ll be
prepared to budget, coordinate, oversee, and execute
a project.
9. 3. Programming & Analysis - 260 hours
Programming & Analysis focuses on the first phase of a
project, often referred to as pre-design. In this
experience area, you’ll complete tasks related to
researching and evaluating client requirements,
building code and zoning regulations, and site data to
develop recommendations on the feasibility of a
project.
10. 4. Project Planning & Design - 1,080 hours
Project Planning & Design focuses on the schematic
design phase of a project. In this experience area,
you’ll learn to lay out building designs, review building
codes and regulations, coordinate schematics with
consultants, and communicate design concepts with
your client.
11. 5. Project Development & Documentation - 1,520 hours
Project Development & Documentation focuses on
projects after the schematic design has been approved.
In this area, you’ll gain experience preparing
construction documents and coordinating with
regulatory authorities to gain the necessary approvals for
construction.
12. 6. Construction & Evaluation - 360 hours
Construction & Evaluation focuses on the construction
administration and post-construction phases of a
project. This includes being out on the job site; meeting
with contractors, clients, and building officials; and
punching lists.
14. 3. ARE (Architectural Record Exam)
Administered by National Council of Architectural
Registration Boards (NCARB) with results sent to Texas
Board of Architectural Examiners (TBAE) who oversee
the Architectural Registration process. The ARE can be
taken after attainment of a Master’s degree in
Architecture and six months of documented AXP
experience.
15. The ARE is comprised of six divisions that must be passed
in a five-year timeframe. If you fail a test, you must wait
six months before being eligible to re-take it.

17. After Registration:
Twelve documented hours of Continuing Education
activities each calendar year, pertaining to the Health,
Safety and Welfare (HSW) of the occupants of
buildings. One of those hours must also pertain to
Barrier-free Design (Accessibility) issues, and one hour
must also pertain to Sustainable or Energy Efficiency in
design.
