What can she do?
Scenario: Finding HelpLiliana is working on a report for her history class. This grade is very important, and she wants to make sure she writes a good paper. She has heard that there are places on campus where students can get help with their writing, but she doesn’t know where. What can she do?

Editor's Notes

  • #2 Welcome.Workshop for FT AEC students who get to pre-enroll in KU for the first time.Explain “launch.”Introduce ourselves.
  • #3 Go over our outline.Handout students’ outline. We’ve organized this workshop around different scenarios. Do you know what a scenario is? A situation. Let’s look at the first scenario.
  • #4 He has to go to Strong Hall. We can’t advise him. We only advise students who are allowed one KU course. If you have 2 or more, you must go to University Advising.
  • #5 Let’s talk about some advising information. That is our first topic today.Resources: UG catalog-lots of info (Hold up catalog.) E&P: class search (Click hyperlink and do search.) Handout of screen capture.Classes: Gen. Ed. Requirements: Liberal Arts Tradition Electives - These are courses in any area that you choose yourself. For example, if you are majoring in economics, you will have 55-57 Gen. Ed. Credit hours, 36-37 credit hours in economics, and enough electives to bring your total credit hours to 124. If you are in LAS, business or architecture, you can count 9 credits from AEC L4 or L5 courses as electives if you receive a passing grade.Choosing Courses: How do you know which classes to take? How do you know if they fulfill a requirement? Handout of p.52 of UG Catalog and sample from list of courses. Go over the codes. Handout list of courses from UAC.Advising: AEC advises for 1 KU. UAC advises F/S with 2 or more KU. Online enrollment not available for AEC students.
  • #6 Now we are moving on to the next scenario…Hear from students.
  • #8 This introduces our second major topic: expectations in the classroom. All instructors are required to have office hours. How do you know a professor’s office hours? Do you knock or walk-in? Do you need an appointment? Why would you see a professor during office hours? (What kinds of questions [refer to Mohammed]) Be prepared. Formulate your question ahead of time. What about sending an email? What are good reasons to send an email? (Refer to Jun-Mo scenario.) What is the best way to write an email?Let’s look at some emails…
  • #12 So we talked about communication with professors.
  • #13 PARTICIPATIONKinds of participation: not only asking questions, but also being prepared, small group participationScary, but set small goals & practice in your AEC classes (it’s safe!). Go over handout.Everybody gets nervous—even native speakers. It’s okay to make mistakes.
  • #14 Final point: ResponsibilitiesWhat are a student’s responsibilities? Syllabus: Important info on syllabus. Ask students what kind of info they might see on it. Keep it in your class binder. Attendance counts! Lecture information can be different than the information in the readings. Homework counts! It’s part of the process and a lot of professors grade it. Information in the readings might be different than information in the lecture. What is a good reason for not turning in your HW? [Mohammed secnario]
  • #15 Is this a good reason??
  • #16 Is this?
  • #17 Is this?
  • #19 Syllabus. Are there ANY good reasons for not turning in your HW?
  • #20 Reading load. Choose your courses carefully, especially if your reading/writing scores are low. If reading is your weak area, you don’t want to be in a course that requires hundreds of pages of reading every week.Exams can be based on lectures, readings, or both. You have to attend class AND do the homework.
  • #22 Brochures??
