The ball has dropped on the new year and associations across the country have a brand new set of goals for serving their members and growing their organizations in 2014.
Some associations will have goals for generating new member sales. Some will seek to improve member retention rates. Others will want to increase non-dues revenue from sources such as events, sponsorships and advertising. And, of course, some associations have goals for all three areas.
Regardless of your goals, demonstrating value to your members and growing your association is critical for your success in 2014 and you need more than just goals to achieve success.
You need a plan of how to get there and key strategies you can use to accomplish your goals.

A blog it is a great way to drive traffic to your association's web page (via relevant content and search engine optimization techniques) so that you can have more opportunities to attract the types of individuals who are a perfect fit for membership in your association. However, a blog requires a consistent creation of quality content to be successful. Do you have association blog writer’s block? Here are 20 great blog topics to jumpstart your creativity.

Technology Traps for Associations to AvoidStarChapter
Technology is supposed to make our lives easier, but that isn’t always the case. If your association doesn’t have a clear technology vision and plan, the programs and tools designed to improve your organization can work against you.
Here are three technology traps to watch for in your association.
Successful retention does not happen by chance. This report outlines 5 communication strategies that your association can adopt to become a retention powerhouse.
Member engagement directly impacts an association’s ability
to survive and flourish. Associations that report higher rates of engaged members also report higher renewal rates. The industry lacks a standard definition or measurement method for member engagement, putting the burden on individual associations to develop their own internal definitions and scoring methods.
Thankfully, this can be easier than first thought might indicate and is a worthwhile undertaking.
What does member engagement look like? Why are the programs used by associations beginning to fail? What are members REALLY LOOKING FOR? Answers to these questions and practical recommendations are presented in this presentation.
Rewarding is a neuroscientific principle that plays into human decision making. Rewards lead to positive memories and emotions associated with a particular relationship. As opposed to discounting, which has a
short lifespan of memory impact and can erode a brand’s value, creating a method for conditioning members for positive behaviors will generate long-term positive impressions and preserve the association brand’s value.
After years of talking about it, the fitness industry has still not fixed its member retention issues. The fact is, right now at least, there is no magic bullet for our attrition ills but there are things that you can do - particularly around programming - that will make will make an incremental difference to the average lifetime of your members - and an incremental difference, like an extra month, will have a significant impact on your profitability. Explore what makes an exercise adherence programme entertaining and exciting. You will discover the key components of a winning programme and, most importantly, you will receive templates of programmes that work. The bonus ball is that you will have happy, engaged instructors who enjoy their work and you know what happens to your members when your staff is happy .
Chapter Performance Reimagined: Taking Your Association's Growth to the Next ...Billhighway
Throughout COVID-19, we’ve seen a lot of associations wrestling with the impact of lower revenue and declining membership. But what if your components could help turn that around for you? In times like these, where many associations are not able to have large in-person conferences, chapters and affiliates can be used to deliver member-value locally in ways that National cannot. By empowering your components, associations can increase member engagement and retention, growing both revenue and membership. In this webinar, we touch on ways you can significantly mobilize your components to better serve members and create a win/win for your members, your chapters, and your association.
We traditionally focus on resources, tools, and insights that help you and your chapters without being a commercial for Billhighway. This webinar is different, so we want to be upfront about it. In times like these, associations need Billhighway more than ever. So we’re breaking with tradition and focusing this webinar on demonstrating how the Billhighway solution can help component-based associations solve the unique challenges of our current times. We wanted to share this detail with you ahead of time and encourage you to invite your executive director, CEO, CFO, and other senior-level leaders to hear a message they won’t want to miss.
Chapter Chat: How A CRP Helped Turn Around A 15-Year Membership DeclineBillhighway
With more than 1,500 clubs and 185,000 members, a membership drop of 2% year over year for 15 consecutive years can really impact your bottom line, leaving you with a crisis on your hands. Rick Rangel, Director of Growth at the Northern California Golf Association (NCGA) had chapters that were drowning. NCGA was at a crossroads. They’d been doing the same thing over and over again with their clubs and expecting different results. Rick realized they weren’t giving their chapter leaders the tools they needed to be successful.
- Club officers found one-off tools on their own, and their data did not automatically flow up to HQ.
- Onboarding processes and value propositions differed from club to club.
- Chapter websites were a huge pain and branding issues were rampant.
- On average, club officers easily put in 40 hours every quarter, volunteering their time and energy, so burnout happened often.
Sound familiar? From off-brand chapter websites to AWOL officers, Rick shares his chapters-in-crisis experience. Tune in to find out what tools, tips, and tricks he used to prevent major mayhem. Under Rick’s helm, NCGA has been able to correct course, now seeing 6% membership growth year over year since 2016. Regardless of your components' structure, you’ll benefit from the CRP advice we share in this webinar.

The Five Common Mistakes that Cause
Major Problems for Chapter Leaders
There are five common mistakes that association leaders make that cause major problems for
their organizations. These mistakes lead to decreases in membership and revenues, and burden
chapter leaders to the point of exhaustion.
Solve these Five Problems and

When association leaders fix these five problems their chapters

The Five Mistakes Leaders Make
Fix Them and Watch Your Chapter Thrive
Mistake 1
Mistake 2
Mistake 3
Mistake 4
Mistake 5
3. StarChapter’s Solution
Not keeping accurate track of member
activity is extremely detrimental to the
strength and longevity of your association.
It directly or indirectly leads to problems
with revenues, communication, recruiting,
and complacent leadership.
Keeping track of activity may seem like a
chore if you don’t have the right tools, but
effective leaders will get the right tools –
Not ignore activity and attendance.
They Don’t Track Member Activity
Leaders Should Track
• Membership counts
• Non-member counts
• Meeting attendance
• Continuing education credits
• Member to website interaction
• Email delivery and open rate
• Survey response rates and
results
• Expirations and renewals
• New member counts
Not Tracking Activity
Will Likely Lead To
• Poor event attendance
• Dwindling membership levels
• Shrinking revenue & budget
• Heavier workloads and
frustration for volunteer

With StarChapter it’s easy to track attendance,
new member enrollment, visitors, email open rates,
membership renewals, and more. Imagine having the
transparency to see all those details in just a few clicks.
Each of those numbers will tell you what you’re doing
well, and what you can improve on; if you observe high
event attendance but low new member enrollments,
you can initiate a campaign to convert visitors into members. Likewise, if a high percentage of your members are
opening and reading their emails, but not showing up in strong numbers at events, it may be that you need to plan
or advertise the events to create more enthusiasm – and get members back together. With StarChapter, you can
stay on your chapter’s pulse, and proactively respond to whatever your chapter needs.
Mistake 1
4. StarChapter’s Solution
People chose to sign up with the association because they
anticipated certain advantages would accompany that membership.
Some members respond to decreasing attendance at meetings
by being overly cautious. They slash budgets and cut down on
the quality of meetings. However, too often the result of these
cuts leads to reduced enthusiasm among the remaining active
members, and the association suffers.
If local associations think they are looking out for their members
by keeping dues below market value, they are mistaken. Don’t
shortchange yourself. The viability of your organization and
its ability to thrive and thus provide the maximum amount of
benefit possible for its members, now and for many years to
come, depends on collecting equitably calculated dues. Make it
understood at every opportunity the value of membership and how
important the local association is to the industry or profession.
Do not be so price cautious that you end up having meetings that fail to
excite your membership base. Instead of using a budget as the sole factor,
start by planning an ideal activity, and then “work backwards” – identify the
price that members would need to pay in order to deliver the ideal meeting
or event.
When the meetings and events start to improve, higher dues will be
justified. Great events are the best way to increase activity rates and
membership. Plan activities that are certain to deliver the value your
members are seeking, and then charge a rate that will cover your costs.

Mistake 2
5. This mistake can go unnoticed because chapter leaders seldom have the
ability to tell when problems arise. Emails may be going out to all members,
but they may often go to old or invalid email addresses, or end up in
spam folders. Sending too many messages may cause members to ignore
messages, but sending out too few risks neglecting members and depleting
activity rates. While the level of communication may vary based on your
association, all thriving associations have timely, highly targeted messages
and reminders that keep members informed of chapter activities.

They Don’t Send Timely
Messages and Reminders
• Event invitations and reminders
• Post event surveys
• Announcements
Be careful that your messages are well-targeted and timely. Mass emails should include information that is relevant
to the masses, but should avoid topics or issues that do not pertain to the whole group. Too many emails that are
intended for other people can frustrate members and cause them to ‘tune out’ of future emails.
What Messages Should We Send, And When Should We Send Them?
Maintain lists and sub-divisions within those lists so that emails
can be easily delivered to the proper recipients. It’s best to use a
system that allows you to have all of the member contacts and
non-member contacts properly segmented so that they receive
only the messages and emails that pertain to them.
The result will be that more messages will get through to your
target members, and they will be read, and members will respond
to your excellent communication.
Mistake 3
• Newsletters
• Dues reminders (30, 60, or 90 days out or expired)
• New member welcome messages

6. StarChapter’s Solution
The same logic applies to membership fees as it does for meetings
and event fees.
It is a false belief that if an association has low
membership dues they will have more members.
Price of membership is a factor, but not the most important factor.
If price was the most important factor in decisions, the Yugo would
be the world’s most popular car, and deluxe vehicles like BMW,
Lexus, Mercedes Benz would be out of business. In fact, Yugo is out
of business, and the luxury vehicles are thriving. Why? Because the
most important factor for membership is value. Will the members
gain the advantages and the value from the quality meetings and
networking they can participate in as association members?
People believe that you get what you pay for. If local associations think they are looking out for their members by
keeping dues below market value, they are mistaken. Don’t shortchange yourself. The viability of your organization
and its ability to thrive and thus provide the maximum amount of benefit possible for its members, now and for
many years to come, depends on collecting equitably calculated dues. Make it understood at every opportunity the
value of membership and how important the local association is to the industry or profession.
Instead of working to reduce the price of membership, think first of what
members want from their membership in your association. Then, set a price
for membership based on the value your association will provide.
When the meetings and events start to improve, higher dues will be
justified. Having said that, it is important that you not sell your association
short. Take a good look at the value your organization currently provides
and be sure you assign a corresponding dollar amount to the dues rates.
