Plasma is the fourth state of matter and is defined as a hot ionized gas consisting of approximately equal numbers of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. Plasmas are influenced by electric and magnetic fields due to their charged particles. About 99% of the observable universe consists of plasma, including the sun, solar wind, planetary atmospheres, and stars. Space plasmas have very low densities but high temperatures ranging from thousands to millions of degrees Celsius. Examples of naturally occurring plasmas include lightning and the northern lights, as well as stars and nebulae.
