Plasma is the fourth state of matter where a gas is heated to such a high temperature that its electrons separate from its atoms or molecules, creating a mixture of positively charged ions and negatively charged electrons. Plasma can be artificially created on Earth by passing electricity through a gas, and it is found naturally in outer space making up 99% of the visible universe in stars, nebulae, and solar winds. Plasma differs from gas in that it responds strongly to electric and magnetic fields due to the separated charges and has high electrical conductivity.
