textual analysis
the title is usually
featured towards
the end of the
opening.

3. The first two shots display
this character getting ready
for something, this builds
enigma, and is conventional
for the opening of crime
films. The lighting is high
key, which can also suggest
that this character is a hero.
Due to the shot sequences,
and the misc en scene it can
be established that this
character has a level of
importance. Also the shots
vary a lot, which is a
strength. Here the shot is
changing from MCU to CU.

4. Actors names are then
crossfaded into. I feel it
would be more necessary
to have the actors names
at the bottom, in a smaller
font, as it looks more
professional, and doesn’t
take up a shot, as in my
production there are a lot
of ideologies and
representations to portray
in the short space of 2
minutes.

5. There is then a cut to this
‘hero’ still getting ready and
walking down the stairs, this
emphasises the enigma
created.
Use of misc en scene, should
be considered, as it can help
establish the location, and as
my production is a British
crime, it may be useful to
consider.
A CU of tea is then shown. This
could suggest that the film is a
British crime, as tea is
stereotypically associated with
Britain.

6. After there is a shot of the
‘hero’ opening the door. It cuts
straight to a LS of two people
at a woods. This is a weakness,
as there is no suggestion in the
narrative to how they got
there, and who the other
person is, as he isn’t
introduced.
A CU of the characters feet is
then shown, which I thought
was a good, creative shot to
show them running.

7. The whether, also helps imply
the mood, and location of the
production. This could suggest
that the location is in Britain,
and somewhere not ‘exotic’.
This shot of the sky was used
for a transition, which could be
a strength, due to the
connotations.
The first shot of violence was
near the end of the
production. A MCU of this
character displays him
swinging a bat, this is also a
POV shot
The use of costumes is also a strength, as
this person has got an expensive looking
watch on which can suggest that he is
wealthy, this is often associated with
villains. Especially in productions with a
target audience of the working class. This
may be useful to consider in my
production.

8. There is then a POV shot of the
villain stealing the brief case,
which establishes the genre of
crime. Also the contrast of the
shot has been toned down,
which could connote the pain
the hero is in.
The music featured in this production is atonal
music. This could emphasise the anticipation,
although there was a lack of non diegetic sound,
which in my opinion gave a boring feel to the
production, this should be considered in my
production.

9. • It is essential that the narrative is made clear
• Text and captions should not be neglected, it is important
that they are aesthetically pleasing.
• Characters should be introduced, and shouldn’t just appear
in the shot. Misc en scene can help introduce characters.
• Shots should vary, especially when action sequences occur.
