Textual Analysis of ‘Seek
Bromance’ and ‘Call on Me’
Within the Nu-Disco genre, they tend not to have many codes and
conventions because it allows more freedom when creating an idea for a
video. They tend to feature the videos about love, sexuality and other things
a young audience can relate to. The video tends to feature clubbing scenes
and women with minimal clothing dancing and jumping around. The
atmosphere of the video is usually wild and crazy.
The performance of the video is usually dancing, this plays an important role
in the Nu-Disco Genre, this is due to the fact that these songs and videos are
usually played in clubs and people are meant to dance to this. Nearly all the
Nu-Disco genre videos do feature some form of dance within the video. The
artist if the song (Eric Prydez and Tim Berg) tend not to feature in the video as
they have random narratives in the video that do not always link with the
lyrics.
Overall the usual conventions of the Nu-Disco genre is up beat, narrative not
to do with lyrics, lots of dancing, club scenes, bright colours and women
dancing in little clothing.
The form of the video is a music video.
The conventions of the form always stay the same, the conventions of music
videos are; plot, performance, editing, mise en scene, cinematography and
sound.
Within the Erik Prydez ‘Call on me’ video and the Tim Berg ‘Seek Bromance’ video, they
both use non-diegetic music because both music videos have the song on in the
background the whole way through. This is typical of music videos because they always
have the music track on at the back of the video.
However the ‘seek bromance’ music video has diegetic sound at the beginning because
at the start of the video there is a sequence of the narrative where a man is following a
boy down the drive and says ‘get the hell out of my house’. Then once the boy gets in
the car, the girl asks ‘are you okay’, the boy nods and then the music track starts. Unlike
the seek bromance video, the call on me video does not have a beginning sequence of
diegetic sound because the woman dance teacher walks in and presses play on the
stereo, then the music video starts.
Within the ‘call on me’ Eric Prydez video, the mise-en-scene at the start of the video
shows the dance teacher turning on the music.
The close up shows identifies that she is pressing play, but also it identifies who she is
by her nail polish.
The denotation is her red nail polish. But the connotation of the redness of the nail
polish suggests power. The connotation of power suggests that she is a powerful
woman yet it also re enforces her position of a teacher/leader because she needs the
power and authority to lead the dance class.
The use of the cinematography within this shot conveys dominance of the female
gender. When the woman walks in with the stereo, there is a low angle shot from
the back showing her dominance over the class, this could re enforce her role as
the teacher because she needs to be dominant in the class in order to lead it.
Also the low angle shot is used again on the woman when she is warming up. This
shot conveys the dominance of the woman because she looks powerful with her
hand on her hip, she takes up most of the shot and is dominanting the people
behind her in the shot therefore showing the dominance she has over the
audience.
Within the mise-en-scene, the male is stood stretching but it also shows his costume
that he is wearing. The use of his black and white costume connotates power and
innocence which could be re enforcing the characters personality.
Also the use of cinematography, the low angle shot conveys the male dominance.
This could therefore demonstrate to the audience that he has some sort of
dominance in the class, even though he is the only male. It could also be emphasisng
old fashion values that the males have dominance over the women.
Within the Nu-Disco genre, the typical codes and conventions of the genre is
dance because the Nu-Disco usually dance due to the music being distributed
in mostly clubs, bright colors so it can relate to teens, as they usually wear
bright colors within their clothing and minimal clothing to re enforce sexuality
.
Within this establishing shot, it is using the typical conventions and codes of
the genre because it is showing the women warming up to the music by
stretching, therefore it is showing a style of dance because of the acrobatics
they are performing
Within the establishing shot, the costumes are
shown. The costumes are all bright colors such
as pink and illumines orange and revealing.
This is typical of Nu-Disco because it is re
enforcing sexuality by making the women look
desirable and also the use of the colors are
used to relate to the young audience.
Within this medium shot, the mise en scene shows the costumes that the women are
wearing. The costumes are minimal clothing that shows off features such as the girls
hips, legs and bums. This gives the female younger audience something that they can
relate to as they would all desire the body that the girls have on the video yet the male
young audience would look at the girls features and desire a girl with that kind of body
but they would only see the women on the video as sexual objects (Laura Mulvey).
Even though the costumes are very minimal, it re enforces the verisimilitude as girls
wear leotards to dance classes.
Within the establishing shot in the dance studio, the mise-en-scene re enforces
verisimilitude because the girl in the background is sat stretching. This typical of real
life because she is stretching in a dance studio after a class to cool down, also it is
showing the typical convention of dance in the Nu-Disco genre because she is
showing the dance aspect of flexibility.
Also within the mise-en-scene is the convention of love, which is typical in the Nu-
Disco genre. The girl is close to the boy and gazing in his eyes, therefore conveying
love from the body language of being close- which re enforces the connection
between them both.
Within these close up shots is the convention of sexuality; which is typical of the Nu-
Disco genre.
The denotation of the shots are body features such as bum, boobs, hips and legs, but
the convention of these is sexuality. The sexuality is meant to draw in a teenage
audience to desire the girls bodies and to also be able to relate to them as at that age
they are experiencing a lot of sexuality. The young males also tend to look at the
sexuality and refer to the women as objects, rather than people because they are
desiring their body and looks. (Laura Mulvey)
The use of the blue car represents summer because of the light
blue color which representing the clear sky. The convertible
aspect of the car represents that its also summer because the
roof is down because its warm.
Blue connotes wisdom and confidence which suggests that the
people in the car are confident and wise because they are about
to go on an road trip adventure.
The white house in the background connotes innocence from the
color white. This suggests to the audience that the boys ‘home’ is
innocent because a ‘home’ connotes safety, comfort and
relaxation.
The use of these medium shots shows the conventions of love
through the female and male because they are cuddled
together asleep. This is typical of the NU-Disco genre because
the convention of love is portrayed in the music, so that the
young audience can relate to the characters in the music
video.
Also the use of the color blue in the car connotes confidence
because the characters are confident to go out on a road trip
but it also could mean that the characters are confident with
themselves around each other because they are all friends.
The use of the black bra in the medium shot conveys sexuality because the girl is
confident enough to show off her sexual features in front of her friends. The
convention of sexuality is used a lot in NU-Disco videos because it shows the typical
NU-disco character as wild and crazy.
Also the use of the ‘black’ on the bra connotes power, which portrays the female
character as a dominant character in the music video but also black potrays
darkness which could foreshadow that the female character does some things bad,
such as drugs (pills).
The use of the medium shots show that the characters are doing drugs (pills) and alcohol.
This is a convention of the NU-Disco genre because it relates to the younger audience
because they will be curious about alcohol and drugs like the characters on the music video
are. The video shows the effects of the alcohol and drugs because the use of fast editing
shows the disorientation of the characters because they are confused where they are. Also
at the end of the video, it shows the 3 characters in bed together which suggests that they
are not being themselves as they are all friends, and when they are sober, they do not get
into bed together. This could relate to the younger audience because it could emphasize
that the effects of drugs are bad.
The use of the green top that the boy is wearing in the establishing shot connotes
Youth. This conveys to the audience that he is young. This is a convention of the NU-
Disco genre because it is letting the young audience relate to the boy in the top
because they are at a similar age.
Also within the image is the girl in a black top and boots and blue shorts. This
connotes her character as powerful and confident because she is chasing after the
boy who has nicked her pants. The ‘powerful’ and ‘confident’ girl is a typical genre of
the nu-disco genre because it is giving the younger audience something to relate to
because they would look up to her and think they would want to be like her because
she's confident about who she is.
The use of the fast paced editing of the signs in LA convey the disorientation of the
characters because they are confused about where they are because they are high on
drugs. This is typical of the NU-Disco genre because the signs are all signs to different
clubs and bars. Clubs are typical in the nu-disco genre because that is where the music is
more likely to be played, therefore making the music video more verisimilitude.
The use of the fast paced editing of them travelling in the car suggests that there is a lot
going on in such a short place of time because they are passing so many cities and travelling
so the view is always changing, there fore the fast editing is portraying how far they have
travelled in such a short space of time.
The fast editing aspect is typical of the Nu-disco genre because it is giving the younger
audience something to desire because they are travelling, therefore it will give the younger
audience an aspiration to travel.
The use of the bright colors are a typical convention of the NU-disco genre because the
bright colors of the city and signs represent a club kind of atmosphere because a club is
where the music is more than likely to be played.
The establishing shot shows the 3 characters drinking and playing poker.
The use of the poker table suggests the 3 characters are gambling. This is typical of the Nu-
Disco genre because it relates to the younger audience because they would be curious as
what it is like to gamble and also some younger audience would gamble, therefore they can
relate to the character having a good time. The use of the poker also is typical of the nu disco
genre because it is like a club atmosphere because music is played and there's lots of flashing
lights, this suggests the type of place that the nu disco genre music would be played.
The use of the alcohol bottles in the shot is a convention of the nu-disco genre because the
music is consumed in a club where they serve alcohol, also the use of alcohol can relate to the
young audience because most of the 18/19 year olds like to go out and drink
Within the medium shot is the mise-en-scene of the Las Vegas strip where the 3 characters are.
All three characters show the typical convention of dance in the nu-disco genre. The 3
characters are dancing along to the beat of the music, like they are in a club. The dance aspect
in a club is typical of the video because it is showing the audience where the music would be
consumed.
The theme of the club with the dance, alcohol and bright lights can relate to the audience
because the young audience will be doing similar things to these characters such as drinking
and dancing, when they out.
The middle establishing shot demonstrates the girl dancing, she is wearing a small black dress,
which is minimal clothing. The use of the black dress shows the dominance of the female
because black connotes power and also her frame positioning portrays her dominance because
she is tallest out of the people in the shot, therefore showing her dominance over the rest of
the people in the club because she is towering over them when she is dancing. The minimal
black dress is a typical convention of nu-disco because the minimal clothing whilst dancing
suggests the crazy atmosphere of the club. Therefore relating to the young audience because it
is showing them the crazy atmosphere that they may experience in the clubs that they go to.

The video tends to feature clubbing scenes and women with minimal clothing dancing and jumping around. The atmosphere of the video is usually wild and crazy. The performance of the video is usually dancing, this plays an important role in the Nu-Disco Genre, this is due to the fact that these songs and videos are usually played in clubs and people are meant to dance to this. Nearly all the Nu-Disco genre videos do feature some form of dance within the video. The artist if the song (Eric Prydez and Tim Berg) tend not to feature in the video as they have random narratives in the video that do not always link with the lyrics. Overall the usual conventions of the Nu-Disco genre is up beat, narrative not to do with lyrics, lots of dancing, club scenes, bright colours and women dancing in little clothing. The form of the video is a music video. The conventions of the form always stay the same, the conventions of music videos are; plot, performance, editing, mise en scene, cinematography and sound.
  • 3. Within the Erik Prydez ‘Call on me’ video and the Tim Berg ‘Seek Bromance’ video, they both use non-diegetic music because both music videos have the song on in the background the whole way through. This is typical of music videos because they always have the music track on at the back of the video. However the ‘seek bromance’ music video has diegetic sound at the beginning because at the start of the video there is a sequence of the narrative where a man is following a boy down the drive and says ‘get the hell out of my house’. Then once the boy gets in the car, the girl asks ‘are you okay’, the boy nods and then the music track starts. Unlike the seek bromance video, the call on me video does not have a beginning sequence of diegetic sound because the woman dance teacher walks in and presses play on the stereo, then the music video starts.
  • 4. Within the ‘call on me’ Eric Prydez video, the mise-en-scene at the start of the video shows the dance teacher turning on the music. The close up shows identifies that she is pressing play, but also it identifies who she is by her nail polish. The denotation is her red nail polish. But the connotation of the redness of the nail polish suggests power. The connotation of power suggests that she is a powerful woman yet it also re enforces her position of a teacher/leader because she needs the power and authority to lead the dance class.
  • 5. The use of the cinematography within this shot conveys dominance of the female gender. When the woman walks in with the stereo, there is a low angle shot from the back showing her dominance over the class, this could re enforce her role as the teacher because she needs to be dominant in the class in order to lead it. Also the low angle shot is used again on the woman when she is warming up. This shot conveys the dominance of the woman because she looks powerful with her hand on her hip, she takes up most of the shot and is dominanting the people behind her in the shot therefore showing the dominance she has over the audience.

This gives the female younger audience something that they can relate to as they would all desire the body that the girls have on the video yet the male young audience would look at the girls features and desire a girl with that kind of body but they would only see the women on the video as sexual objects (Laura Mulvey). Even though the costumes are very minimal, it re enforces the verisimilitude as girls wear leotards to dance classes.

The sexuality is meant to draw in a teenage audience to desire the girls bodies and to also be able to relate to them as at that age they are experiencing a lot of sexuality. The young males also tend to look at the sexuality and refer to the women as objects, rather than people because they are desiring their body and looks. (Laura Mulvey)
