The document analyzes the textual elements of two magazine covers: 1) The masthead, main image of Ewan McGregor, and main sell line focusing on Ewan are analyzed on the first cover. 2) Elements like the masthead, puffs, sell line focusing on the film "The Neon Demon", and main image of Ellie Fanning are discussed on the second cover. Both analyses focus on how the design elements are used to advertise to the intended audience.

1. MAGAZINE TEXTUAL
ANALYSIS

2. Masthead: the black lower case font is slightly more casual than
most magazines, this casualness advertises itself to a more
youthful audience.
Puffs: the puffs linger around the side of the poster and across the
bottom of the poster and doesn't really pull our attention from the
main (only) image on the cover.
Main image: the main image is a mid shot of actor Ewan McGregor,
the image is stripped back of all its detail, the basic image shows a
more professional head shot idea rather than a glamorous
‘Hollywood’ poster image as usual for other film magazines like
total film, or empire. His eyes stand out also, the blue/grey looks at
the buyer clearly and could be a marketing technique since it has a
more personal touch.
Main sell line: the main sell line has the biggest text on the cover is
‘Ewan’ showing that he is more important than the magazine title
is well known enough for them to make other text bigger.
Colour scheme: the colour is messy, lots of warm colours on a grey
background isn’t something I like, and prefer something with am
bit more consistency

3. Masthead: the title is again in lower case keeping some form of
consistence even though this issue is over a decade younger than
the previous one. The yellow text is nice to look at its soft and
doesn’t cause any visual conflict with the rest of the cover.
Puffs: the puffs are really nicely placed either side of the sell line
with the same colour scheme as the masthead keeping the magazine
consistent and professional. The advertisement for Cannes is also a
UCP for the poster and promotes itself to the audience who enjoy
these festivals and the work showcases.
Sell line: the use of neon lights font for ‘the neon demon’ is a smart
and tactical approach to promoting the film. Capitals have been used
to highlight importance of the film and with no celebrity name on
the cover so we can only assume that’s the main star of the film.
Main image: Main image is of Ellie Fanning, who is made to look
extremely feminine under the red pink lights and the pink lips. The
rest of her make up is clean and limited. She’s painted and
positioned in a delicate light, keeping her eyes down and body
curled she looks innocent.
