Tetanus in animals can be confused with other conditions that cause muscle spasms such as strychnine poisoning or meningitis. A veterinarian should consider cervical vertebral fractures, cervical osteomyelitis, pleuritis, laminitis, meningitis, or myopathies in the differential diagnosis. Knowing a history of injuries in an animal displaying clinical signs can increase suspicion of tetanus.
