As Plan International celebrates 25 years of achievement in Zimbabwe, we check in with 10 former sponsored children to see what their lives are like today.

1. Former sponsored
children in Zimbabwe:
Where are they today?
Lydia completed a BA and now
works for an international aid
agency. “To the workers,
volunteers, donors and
management, I am so grateful.”

2. Nyari graduated with a
diploma in general
nursing, and is working
as a nurse. She’s also
completing a diploma in
operating theatre
nursing and hopes to
do a master’s degree in
surgical nursing in
future.
“If it was not for Plan
Zimbabwe’s
intervention, I wouldn’t
have managed to be
where I am today.”

3. Abraham is now working as a telecommunications engineer.

4. Richard works as a child
protection specialist in the
government’s Department
of Social Services.
“I gained immensely from
my ‘love affair’ with Plan,”
he says.
“We had the chance to
interact with sponsors from
abroad. Prior to that, we
were sort of ‘cocooned’
from the rest of the world
and we thought the
boundary to our world was
the mountains surrounding
our villages.”

5. Batsirai is a teacher who encourages girls to pursue their dreams.

6. Maurice completed a
BSc Honours in
Agricultural Economics
and has since worked
for Plan Zimbabwe.
“My life was radically
transformed because of
my sponsorship. I hope
that each sponsor can
make a difference in a
child’s life the same way
my sponsor dramatically
transformed mine. I
have many dreams in
my life … one of them is
to reach out to someone
the way you did to me.”

7. Edwin is a
journalist who says,
“Plan gave me the
opportunity to
realize my dreams.
I also feel obliged
to give back the
skills to the less
privileged children
so that they
appreciate the
power of
expressing
themselves.”

8. Alice is studying for a degree in human resource management.

9. “My sister was a
role model,” says
Tendai (pictured).
Her sister Gladys is
a former sponsored
child who
completed a
finance degree and
now works at
Zimbabwe
Revenue Authority.
Gladys is now
paying for Tendai’s
education as she
studies to become
a teacher.

10. “When my sponsor wrote letters
to me explaining how he helped
people as a physician, I fell in love
with the medical field,” says
Prince, a third-year medical
student.
“Plan’s support gave me the
opportunity to pursue my vision
and now it is my turn to serve
others. There are many boys and
girls who have potential to break
barriers and what they need are
local role models. I believe this is
where I have a big role to play.”
