Nigeria is one of West Africa's crown jewels in which traditions are still respected
and coastal cities accommodate to travelers stopping through or settling down.
Nigeria is one of the largest economies in Africa, making for an exciting volunteer
experience. Volunteering in Nigeria is not as dangerous as the media might suggest.
The country suffers from an image of constant civil strife and political instability. To
dismiss Nigeria based on those criteria is unjust.
Volunteering came to existence in Nigeria during the Britain's colonial rule in 1900
up till 1960. As at 1966, six years after Nigerian gained their independence the
organization gave birth to other subordinate bodies which are as follows including
in the state, federal and international levels guided by the Nigeria Red Cross Service
(NRCS) under one umbrella and diversified goal.

This is a volunteering organization, open to
boys of all religions, although its members are
mostly Muslims and Christians of various
denominations.
Program emphasis is on citizenship training
and community service projects, services at
national, state and community events, and
providing first aid in case of disaster.
Fish farming is carried out in rural areas to
improve diet.

Based in the city of Lagos, in Nigeria,
volunteers can partake in various
placements, including those focused on
Youth Development, Community Health,
and Childcare. In addition, participants
can explore the culture, language, and
customs of Nigeria through cultural
activities. American and Canadian
participants are welcome to apply.

Who is NRCS Volunteer?
A Nigerian Red Cross volunteer is a person,
who carries out the National society’s’ activities
occasionally or regularly upon his/her free will,
offering his/her expertise, knowledge, skills,
energy and time, and not by a desire for material
or financial gain or by external social, economic or
political pressure. However, a Nigerian Red
Cross volunteer may be or may not be a member
of the Society.
Definition of terms

Regular Volunteers: - Those who regularly provide services on behalf of
the NRCS and are engaged in the day-to-day activities of the National
Society on alternate basis.
Reservist Volunteers: - Those who are called upon in the time of
emergency or need, to provide specific services on behalf of the National
Society.
Qualified Volunteers:- Those who are recruited, due to their special skills
and experts such as medical doctors, Accountants, Engineers, Teachers,
Lectures, Nurses. Etc.
Classification of Volunteer

Service Volunteers: - These are involved in the general implementation of the activities
and programme of the Nigerian Red Cross Society.
Leadership Volunteers: - These are involved in policy making and monitoring of
implementation process of the National Society’s activities at various levels, among them
is the Governing Board of the NRCS.
Categories of Volunteer
16. Nigerian Red Cross Society will have the following
responsibilities towards its volunteers.
Provide a code of conduct, which sets out the rights and
responsibilities of the National Society and its volunteers
and ensure adherence to it.
Engage its volunteers in the planning and
implementation of the National Society’s strategy and
annual plan of action.
Recruit volunteers for specific, explicitly described roles
and tasks on basis of their profile, competence,
commitment and potential but irrespective of their race,
ethnicity, sex, religious belief, disability, and age.
Ensure volunteer participation is gender sensitive for the
effective delivery of services and activities.
Provide appropriate orientation, training, placement,
rewarding, recognition, and training opportunities.

Rights
Choose to become member of the Nigerian Red Cross Society as defined by the
society’s Statutes and membership guidelines.
Be recognized and regarded as Nigerian Red Cross Society human resources.
Have appropriate training and opportunity for personal capacity development
to be able to undertake agreed tasks.
Have appropriate materials provided to be able to embark on agreed tasks or
roles and duties.
Accept or refuse any task or role in accordance with the Code of conduct and
fundamental principle of voluntary service.
Present proposals and raise issues with any authority in the National Society.
Rights and obligations of volunteers

The Nigerian Red Cross Society, together with other volunteering
organizations has developed their interest and priority to provide
committed working environment which is conducive and supportive of
the self-esteem and dignity of every person within the national society.
These objective is to ensure a climate of understanding, cooperation and
mutual respect. it is incumbent, and required upon all volunteers not to
condone or tolerate behavior which constitutes harmful to any person
whatsoever.
