The document discusses top-down and bottom-up processing in listening. Top-down processing uses background knowledge and context clues to derive meaning, while bottom-up processing derives meaning from incoming language data like sounds and words. Listening to spoken discourse is more challenging than written as it is instantaneous with no chance to re-listen. Listening provides essential input for language learning. Common difficulties in listening include not understanding every word, getting distracted, lacking stamina, and not recognizing familiar words. The document recommends some books and resources for improving listening skills.
• The lyrics are about how the innocence and wonder of childhood can quickly give way to worry and cynicism as children are taught to be responsible adults. It makes the point that logic can restrict creativity and passion. Supertramp keyboard player Roger Hodgson, who wrote this song and sang the lead vocals, said in our 2012 interview: "I think it was very relevant when I wrote it, and actually I think it's even more relevant today. It's very basically saying that what they teach us in schools is all very fine, but what about what they don't teach us in schools that creates so much confusion in our being. I mean, they don't really prepare us for life in terms of teaching us who we are on the inside. They teach us how to function on the outside and to be very intellectual, but they don't tell us how to act with our intuition or our heart or really give us a real plausible explanation of what life's about. There's a huge hole in the education. I remember leaving school at 19, I was totally confused. That song really came out of my confusion, which came down to a basic question: please tell me who I am. I felt very lost. I had to educate myself in that way, and that's why California was very good for me to kind of re-educate myself, if you like.

Songs Are The Art Of Speaking
I have been using songs to teach English and Polish for a long time. Personally I firmly believe in the power of good music as well as in the power of well-written lyrics. Songs may help with learning pronunciation and can be the inspiration for extraordinarily interesting, challenging discussions. Different topics often inspire students to talk about various issues and problems, often sharing extremely different perspectives. That is why songs are also materials for practicing conversational skills.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2. Top-down process refers to using schemata to
derive meaning from and interpret the
message. It refers to the attribution of
meaning, drawn from one’s own knowledge
to language input. It requires the prediction
of meaning by using context clues and
combining them with background knowledge.
Bottom-up process refers to deriving the
meaning of the text based on the incoming
language data, from
sounds, words, grammatical relationships, to
meaning.
3. Listening is a spoken discourse and spoken
discourse has very different characteristics
from written discourse, and these
differences can add a number of dimensions
to our understanding of how we process
speech. For example, spoken discourse is
usually instantaneous. The listener must
process it “online” and there is often no
chance to listen to it again (Richard,2008)
4. Listening is vital in the language classroom
because it provides input for the learner.
Without understanding input at the right
level, any learning simply cannot begin.
Listening is thus fundamental to speaking
(Nunan,1997)
5. They are trying to understand every word
They get left behind trying to work out what a
previous word meant
They just don't know the most important words
They don't recognize the words that they know
They have problems with different accents
They lack listening stamina/ they get tired
They are distracted by background noise
They can't cope with not having images
They have hearing problems

good seat. The play was very interesting. I
did not enjoy it. A young man and a young
woman were sitting behind me. They were
talking loudly. I could not hear the actors. I
turned round. I looked at the man and the
woman angrily. They did not pay any
attention. In the end, I could not bear it. I
turned round again. I can’t hear a word! I
said angrily.
It’s none of your business, the young man said
rudely. This a private conversation.
