In the Kutch district of India, which receives very little rainfall, women traditionally had to walk long distances to collect drinking water for their families. This changed when an NGO worked with local women to organize water committees and train them. Led by a tribal grandmother, the women studied local geology and revived traditional water sources, enabling their village to become self-reliant for water rather than relying on government supplies. Their success inspired other villages, with women in some places building wells themselves. It helped bridge social divisions and allowed conservative Muslim women to take on new public roles managing water resources.
The cell membrane is composed of phospholipids, cholesterol, and proteins. It ranges from 7.5-10 nm thick and is only visible under an electron microscope. The cell membrane has several functions including being selectively permeable, acting as a physical barrier, allowing communication between cells, and establishing connections between cells. Transport across the cell membrane can occur through passive transport mechanisms like simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, and osmosis. Active transport requires energy and moves molecules against their concentration gradient using carrier proteins like sodium-potassium pumps and proton pumps. Vesicular transport uses endocytosis and exocytosis to move larger molecules and vesicles across the membrane.

The Tegemeo Women's Group in Mweteni village, Tanzania started a water and sanitation project in 2005 to reduce the burden on women and children from fetching water. Over 10,000 people now have access to water from the project. In 2011, two subvillages received piped water through the first phase of the project. Challenges included funding issues and resistance from some villagers. The second phase in 2014 extended water access to another subvillage. The project's success is due to community ownership, international cooperation, and sustainability measures like maintenance and payment arrangements. Access to water has improved lives by reducing women's workload and allowing more time for other activities.
Academia: Anik Bhaduri, GWSP, 16th January UN Water Zaragoza Conference 2015water-decade
Anik Bhaduri discusses achieving sustainable development goals related to water under conditions of risk and uncertainty. Three main points:
1) Risk is an important factor in decisions around sustainable water use, stemming from uncertainties in future yields, prices, and water supply. Farmers are more likely to adopt conservation practices when risks are higher.
2) New policies are needed to encourage efficient water use, including innovative financing, changes to governance and legal frameworks, and technologies. Efficiency is key to equitable water distribution and climate change adaptation.
3) Storage infrastructure and flexible pricing policies can increase adoption of efficient irrigation by more than 20%, especially when water supply is uncertain. Institutional reforms and incentive-based approaches are important to

Presentation Jack Moss, Financing instruments Wrap up, 17th January UN Water ...water-decade
This document discusses financing sustainable water services. Some key points made include:
- Water services require funding to be sustainable, but "free water" is an illusion and does not generate enough revenue.
- The costs of not having adequate water services are very high for both the public and businesses.
- Water pricing needs to cover real costs to avoid a vicious cycle of low funding, degraded infrastructure, and poor service quality.
- While some innovative financing instruments exist, projects need sound business models where revenues cover total expenditures.
- Water pricing is political and policymakers need to understand that tariffs and taxes must fund real costs, not just short-term interests.
- Most people are willing to pay for reliable water

One of the many challenges facing IT leaders today is determining which technology to choose for developing enterprise applications. Should they be native mobile apps, Web-based apps using HTML5, or create a hybrid app? And once you've done your development, how best to deploy, manage, and secure these apps?
Jonathan Stark, Mobiquity's vice president of application architecture, the author of O'Reilly's Building iPhone Apps with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and Building Android Apps will provide insight developing enterprise apps:
- Best Development Approaches: HTML5 Web Apps vs. Native apps
- Minimizing barriers of device diversity
- Minimizing barriers of platform variations
Cimarron Buser, Apperian's VP of product marketing, will talk about deploying and managing enterprise apps:
- Real examples of app deployment in businesses
- Making the case for a great user experience
- The application life-cyle
- Keeping things current for your employees without a heavy hand
This document discusses the differences between HTML5 web apps and native mobile apps for enterprises. It notes that while native apps provide the highest level of polish, they are difficult to maintain across multiple platforms. Web apps can reach the largest audience but lack access to device hardware. Hybrid apps provide a middle ground, allowing access to device features through a native wrapper. The document also discusses challenges of managing and deploying enterprise mobile apps at scale, and suggests using an "app catalog" approach rather than public app stores.

Jude Umeh gave a presentation on mobile infrastructure and its role in enabling digital futures. Emerging trends in areas like social networking, context-aware computing, and digital content usage will significantly increase the importance of mobile technology. Umeh discussed key demand drivers and scenarios, examined perspectives from different stakeholders, and outlined addressing issues and enabling further development of mobile infrastructure.
Mobile technology is driving changes in site assessments. [1] Site visits can now utilize mobile mapping apps to capture locations, photos, and measurements. [2] Records can be reviewed and annotated using tablet and mobile scanning apps. [3] Reporting is moving to digital, print-independent formats optimized for various screens rather than printed pages. Firms that leverage mobile technologies to save time for themselves and clients will have an advantage.

Jonathan Sheets recommends Nuance Technologies (NUAN) as a strong buy. NUAN recently dropped in price from $36 to $26, providing a favorable risk/reward opportunity. Near-term catalysts include Apple's upcoming iPad 3 release and guidance that a lower 1Q revision will not prevent meeting full year guidance. NUAN is the market leader in speech, imaging, and keypad solutions with 4000 patents and 200 speech scientists. It has a large customer base of top companies and generates most of its revenue from healthcare, mobile/consumer, and enterprise segments.

Responsive Web Design: One Size No Longer Fits AllPerficient, Inc.
Designing to allow an ever-increasing number of devices to access your website or web application is a game you can never win. There is arguably little business benefit to targeting less-widely used devices, yet web-accessible smartphones that aren't iPhones constitute a large group of users that is costly to ignore.
Responsive Web Design is a new approach to the design and execution of websites and web applications that offers a way to cater to a much wider array of users and devices than would be possible otherwise. Through the use of modern web standards and a thorough execution plan it is possible to create attractive, brand-aware user experiences that work across a wide range of devices - feature phones, smartphones, tablets, netbooks, laptops and desktop computers - without requiring expensive device-centric development.
This slideshow covers:
• Costs and benefits of Responsive Web Design
• Examples of large-scale responsive websites currently deployed
• When to consider a responsive approach to your project
• The skills your team should have, and the techniques they should be using, when designing responsively

new devices
• Less information
• Button design
• Cloud power is the
new enabler
• Is design now more
import than technology?
10. • We‟ve all heard the phrase
• App‟s are great for tasks
• App‟s aren‟t so good at fully integrated solutions
• You need the right tool for the right job
11. • Formed a partnership to explore further
• Examined the need for remote working by role
• Sales person • Service Engineer

a “User Persona”
• IRIS worked with Microsoft‟s top UI experts
• We created screen mock ups with „Blend‟
15. • We achieved our target and created
a tablet application
16.
17. • Our existing accounting and ERP
applications are not going to
disappear overnight, however…
• We predict there will be more and more
productivity enhancing applications
for different roles for new devices
• Designing applications for devices
such as phones and tablets is different
• It‟s about design as much as about technology
18. • Will workers want to carry 3 devices?
• Is it possible to have just 1 device?
• We think this is unlikely, but 2 seems
a real possibility!
19. • Remote working is set to increase
• Access to existing „Line of Business‟
solutions will continue to be needed
• New devices means that this
is easier than ever before
