structures
Definition of and purpose of structure
 Structure is something that consist of many parts held together in a
specific way.
Classification of structure
 Natural structure
 Man-made structure
Man-made structure-is structure that have made by human being is also
known as artificial structure.eg Bridge, stadium, traditional hurt ,
birdcage and aeroplane
Natural structureNatural structure is structure that have no human interference.eg nest,
snail and tortoise.
Purpose of structure.
 To enclose and protect
 To span a gap
 To support a load
Purpose of structures
 Structures are build to support load is static( not moving or
dynamic moving)
 Parts in structure support tensile (pulling) or compressive
(pushing) force.
Types of structures
 Frame structures
 Shell structures
 Solid structures
Frame structures are made from beams connected to each other
to support a load. eg skeleton
Shell structures have a solid outer surface, like the skin covering
your body (enclose something) eg snail shell.
Solid structures are rigid and heavy. e.g. mountain
Triangulation
 Triangulation – is when an extra member is added to rectangle to form two
triangle
 Struts: as rod or bars forming part of a framework that are designed to resist
compression.
 Tie: a rod or bar that resists pulling or tension
Summary
 Stability is the state or condition of being steady and unlikely to change, fall or
move.
 Stiffening is the process of adding strength and form to sheet materials.

Tubing and corrugation are two method used to stiffen materials
 Corrugation is used to shape a sheet of materials into folds to form alternating
ridges and grooves.
 Tension forces stretch, bending forces bend
 Torsion forces twist
 Shearing force caused two surfaces to slide against each other.
 Beams that resist compression (pushing force) are called struts.
 Beams that support pulling force are called ties.

  • 2. Unit 1 understanding structures Definition of and purpose of structure  Structure is something that consist of many parts held together in a specific way. Classification of structure  Natural structure  Man-made structure Man-made structure-is structure that have made by human being is also known as artificial structure.eg Bridge, stadium, traditional hurt , birdcage and aeroplane Natural structureNatural structure is structure that have no human interference.eg nest, snail and tortoise. Purpose of structure.  To enclose and protect  To span a gap  To support a load
  • 3. Purpose of structures  Structures are build to support load is static( not moving or dynamic moving)  Parts in structure support tensile (pulling) or compressive (pushing) force. Types of structures  Frame structures  Shell structures  Solid structures Frame structures are made from beams connected to each other to support a load. eg skeleton Shell structures have a solid outer surface, like the skin covering your body (enclose something) eg snail shell. Solid structures are rigid and heavy. e.g. mountain
  • 4. Triangulation  Triangulation – is when an extra member is added to rectangle to form two triangle  Struts: as rod or bars forming part of a framework that are designed to resist compression.  Tie: a rod or bar that resists pulling or tension

Summary  Stability is the state or condition of being steady and unlikely to change, fall or move.  Stiffening is the process of adding strength and form to sheet materials.  Tubing and corrugation are two method used to stiffen materials  Corrugation is used to shape a sheet of materials into folds to form alternating ridges and grooves.  Tension forces stretch, bending forces bend  Torsion forces twist  Shearing force caused two surfaces to slide against each other.  Beams that resist compression (pushing force) are called struts.  Beams that support pulling force are called ties.
