This 5-week technical photography assignment requires students to learn basic camera skills by manually adjusting camera controls. Students will take photos on location and at home to demonstrate their understanding of camera components like the viewfinder and light meter. They must document their work and settings in a sketchbook, and submit final printed photos exploring concepts like aperture, shutter speed, depth of field, and formal qualities to their workbook and blog.

1. AS Photography – Technical Assignment
Wk Beginning: 10 September - 8 October (5 weeks)
During this project you will be learning basic camera skills, this is a strictly MANUAL project
focusing on your camera controls.
• For the technical exercises you will be working on location at college and at home.
• All of your work needs to be documented in your sketchbook.
• Final outcomes should be printed in your workbook and added onto your tumblr blog.
Project Should include the following:
1. Your camera i) Your camera viewfinder and how it works.
ii) Your camera light meter
iii) A diagram showing how light travels through a camera
2. ISO iv) Definition of ISO
v) Your examples of five different ISO settings, eg 100, 200, 400, 800
and 1600.
vi) Show the difference between ISO 100 and 1600 by cropping into
two examples.
2. Shutter Speed i) Shutter speed definition.
ii) An example of fast shutter speed, including your manual settings.
iii) An example of slow shutter speed, including your manual settings.
3. Aperture i) Definition of aperture
ii) An example of shallow depth of field, with your manual settings.
iii) An example of extended/wide depth of field, with your manual
settings.
4. Formal Qualities A definition and one example each of the following formal qualities:
i) Dramatic perspective
ii) Use of lines e.g. leading lines or converging lines
iii) Framing
iv) Rule of thirds
v) Moving in close
vi) Balance/symmetry
5. Final Outcome Printed and mounted on photographic paper and included on your blog:
i) 4 final themed photographs on Aperture
ii) 4 final themed photographs on Shutter speed
