Distance education is defined as education that takes place when the instructor and participant are separated by space and/or time, and the gap is bridged through technology or traditional delivery methods. It aims to deliver education to students who are not physically on site. Distance education has its roots in correspondence courses from the early 20th century in Europe. Throughout history, different regions have developed their own forms of distance education using the available resources and technologies of the time, from print materials and postal communication to today's advanced teleconferencing and electronic networking. The key aspect of distance education is separating instructor and learner in place or time while reconnecting them through technology.
