Zakat is the third pillar of Islam that requires Muslims who meet the minimum wealth threshold to give 2.5% of their wealth each year to help the poor and needy. It is a compulsory religious duty meant to purify one's wealth by removing greed and helping those in the Islamic community who are in need, as wealth is considered a gift from Allah of which a portion is meant to support the poor. The recipient of zakat should not feel inferior, as it is the duty of the wealthy to help those in need according to Islamic teachings.
