Teaching and Learning Literature through Multimedia SSIS Lazio – Lingue Straniere Inglese A.A. 2008-2009
The impact of new technologies on Literature From the era of writing to the era of images Radical changes in reading and writing with the advent of Hypertexts E-books
Hypertexts Hypertext is a text which provides a network of links to other texts that are 'outside, beyond and above itself'. Rather than remaining static like traditional text, hypertext makes possible a dynamic organization of information through links and connections . Hypertext is therefore properly described as multisequential or multilinear writing.
E-books Short for electronic book , e-book is the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book. Advantages Text can be searched automatically and cross-referenced using hyperlinks , making the e-book format ideal for works that benefit from such functions. It can include pictures and even sound clips and video or animated graphics.
Implications in Literature Changes in literature teaching methodology From a traditional text-based learning to text-plus-multimedia The use of multimedia creates an opportunity for teachers to recast their own understanding of the role of text in the teaching and learning of literature, and, accordingly, their own beliefs about -- and roles in -- teaching and learning.
Implications in Literature The use of multimedia has enormous potential in the classroom, with a number of advantages for experiencing literary texts: All the language skills (listening, reading, speaking, writing) as well as viewing skills are developed. Literature teaching / learning with multimedia provides an approach that is new and attractive, compared to conventional textbooks in which verbal meaning predominates.
Implications in Literature It suggests interactive activities and provides opportunities for students to study authors, texts, and contexts using a variety of media and a variety of technological and information resources. It involves collaborative work and has proved a powerful catalyst for cooperative learning . Students apply a wide range of strategies to experience, comprehend, interpret, and evaluate texts.
Implications in Literature Students and teachers share resources. This encourages multidisciplinary thinking and cross-curricular approach . Students learn more effectively and more efficiently when teaching methods match their preferred learning styles . They are most highly motivated by a variety of integrated teaching materials, methods, and contexts.
Implications in Literature Students construct their ideas in a new format, using visual as well as spoken and written language. The use of multimedia supports constructionist views of learning which hold that learning takes place when students actively and collectively build knowledge structures. Multimedia support independent learning through student control of information and events and can thus promote student-centered learning.
Technology is only a tool “ The new technologies make the materials vivid, easy to access, and fun to use, and they readily address the multiple ways of knowing that humans possess… Clearly, a marriage of education and technology could be consummated. But it will only be a happy marriage if those charged with education remain clear on what they want to achieve for our children and vigilant that the technology serves these ends.” H. Gardner, “Can Technology Exploit Our Many Ways of Knowing? published in The Digital Classroom: How Technology Is Changing the Way We Teach and Learn (Harvard Education Letter, 2000)
