BTEC PERFORMING ARTS
Musical Theatre Techniques – PEER/TEACHER OBSERVATION
Instructions – Give this sheet to another member of the group/teacher. Ask them to
complete the first two sections and you must complete the response in the third section.
• Name of observer: Mrs Wilkins (Director)
• Name of performer being observed: Phoebe Barr
• Workshop/Rehearsal: Rent workshop with Musical Director Miss Thurtle
• The observer must make comment on each of the following
1. Professional Attitude Comments
Punctuality & Attendance Consistent attendance to every
workshop and always arrives on time.
Often even uses the space in her own
time to rehearse and perfect her vocal
ability.
Readiness to Work Dressed appropriately and always
warmup up before vocal singing
sessions. Could benefit from
completing vocal warmups every day.
Communication with other company
members during the rehearsal
Good communication with the group
and Musical Director. Strong leadership
with rest of the class to achieve as a
group. This was demonstrated in this
session as Phoebe took the soprano
harmony line which is vital for
sustaining the tune.
Focus and attitude during the rehearsal Excellent focus throughout the
workshop and confident attitude
towards the work. Needs to relax more
and enjoy the sessions rather fully
focussing on sound quality. If she
relaxed more the sound would be
easier to push out.
Ability to take on board feedback from
other company members and use it to
improve own work
Excellent engagement in the post
workshop feedback session. Made
valuable points about sustaining
harmony lines and how they should

initially stand in groups to support each
other. Very supportive towards others
and arranged extra rehearsals to
improve.
2. Conduct during rehearsals – Did this person behave in a positive and focussed way
during the rehearsals? Assess their contribution to the success of the rehearsal.
Please be as specific as possible
Phoebe behaves in a positive and focussed manner through all rehearsals and
workshops, particularly in this initial vocal workshop with the Musical Director Miss
Thurtle. Singing is one of Phoebes strengths, and she behaved respectfully and
professionally throughout, supporting others, and contributing ideas.
Phoebe supported the group by opting to take a lead vocals section (as this is her
specialism) and she also took on the challenging soprano harmony to sustain the
main tune. In this workshop she helped with sustaining the correct harmony and
keeping good time which is something the whole group did struggle with initially. She
suggested they stood in smaller groups with others singing the same harmony to
enable them to listen to each other before combining the different sections. Phoebe
worked on her posture and body language to produce a nice clear sound and took on
all feedback from the Musical Director. Phoebe was able to articulate her strengths
and weaknesses at the end of the session with a focus on sustaining her vocals and
what she needed to do to improve. Impressive leadership demonstrated in this
session.
3. Performer response – will you make any changes to your working practises
following this observation? Be specific
In future rehearsals I will make sure I will try to relax and focus less on the voice and more
on just singing and enjoying the activities. In turn this will allow me to more easily, like my
director says, sing and push out my voice. This will also make my performance skills improve
as I can just listen to the tune and enjoy myself, which would come through in my body
language. In future rehearsals, I might start to lead vocal warmups. This should improve my
confidence, but also, as I’m one of the more confident singers, I will be able to help the rest
of the members of my company by leading these.

  • 2. BTEC PERFORMING ARTS initially stand in groups to support each other. Very supportive towards others and arranged extra rehearsals to improve. 2. Conduct during rehearsals – Did this person behave in a positive and focussed way during the rehearsals? Assess their contribution to the success of the rehearsal. Please be as specific as possible Phoebe behaves in a positive and focussed manner through all rehearsals and workshops, particularly in this initial vocal workshop with the Musical Director Miss Thurtle. Singing is one of Phoebes strengths, and she behaved respectfully and professionally throughout, supporting others, and contributing ideas. Phoebe supported the group by opting to take a lead vocals section (as this is her specialism) and she also took on the challenging soprano harmony to sustain the main tune. In this workshop she helped with sustaining the correct harmony and keeping good time which is something the whole group did struggle with initially. She suggested they stood in smaller groups with others singing the same harmony to enable them to listen to each other before combining the different sections. Phoebe worked on her posture and body language to produce a nice clear sound and took on all feedback from the Musical Director. Phoebe was able to articulate her strengths and weaknesses at the end of the session with a focus on sustaining her vocals and what she needed to do to improve. Impressive leadership demonstrated in this session. 3. Performer response – will you make any changes to your working practises following this observation? Be specific In future rehearsals I will make sure I will try to relax and focus less on the voice and more on just singing and enjoying the activities. In turn this will allow me to more easily, like my director says, sing and push out my voice. This will also make my performance skills improve as I can just listen to the tune and enjoy myself, which would come through in my body language. In future rehearsals, I might start to lead vocal warmups. This should improve my confidence, but also, as I’m one of the more confident singers, I will be able to help the rest of the members of my company by leading these.
